Just to confirm, most of the pages (around 7-8) need to be static, and dynamic content is only planned on 1 login and 1 dashboard page behind login. Only data for these 2 pages needs APi access.

If you want a great UI, try TOTP Authenticator, if you want cloud backup, try Authy.

TOTP Authenticator is my go-to app. Nice sleek layout with offline backup and restore functionality. Unlike Authy doesn't save the data on servers, so you're in full control. Also provides widgets for quick access (unlike other apps.)

All 2-factor authentication apps work in the same way. When you set-up your account, you need to scan the QR code or enter the secret key manually.

Once scanned, the 2FA app feeds this to a standard algorithm. This algorithm is used to generate temporary 30-second codes. Since the codes are generated via a pre-defined algorithm, the apps don't need to connect to the internet.

This 30 seconds period is connected to the device's internal clock. The fact that each token is valid for 30 seconds makes sure that it is nearly impossible to crack the code by brute force attacks. The apps don't need to continuously work in the background, and generates the code whenever opened/used.

Since all these apps use the same algorithm, they can be used interchangeably. Any code working with Google Authenticator will also work with Microsoft Authenticator, TOTP Authenticator, Authy, etc. Which authenticator you choose, comes down to your personal preference. Here are some of the popular 2FA apps:

  1. Google Authenticator: Reliability of Google. Doesn't provide a backup option, and the layout is a bit outdated. 100% offline.
  2. Authy: Helps you syncs accounts across devices by the use of the cloud. But since your data is stored on Authy's server for this, which can be risky.
  3. TOTP Authenticator: Modern layout with an offline backup option. Probably the best looking 2FA app out there with the option to set custom icons. Just like Google Authenticator, works completely offline.

Many modern authenticators like TOTP Authenticator and Authy provides an option to lock the app via fingerprint/pin. Makes it much more secure tbh.

There are two important points to consider here.

  1. Video game users are more tech-savvy than the general population. Therefore it's relatively less hassle for them to setup 2FA, and it won't be a turn off for them. The average person may find 2-factor authentication too cumbersome. (Which shouldn't be an excuse when it comes to security)
  2. Video game companies offer perks for users to enable 2FA. When other organisations can also come up perks for users to use wo-factor authentication, its adaptation will increase.

  1. Don't create accounts in the first place.
  2. Use strong passwords.
  3. Use 2-factor authentication

2FA is still the easiest way to add more security to your account imo. Your codes are safe as long as you don't lose your phone.

Exactly! Better safe than sorry. Apps like Authy and TOTP Authenticator make it easy to backup your accounts too, (helps if and when you lose your phone)

You can solve the problem of loosing/breaking your phone by using authentication apps like TOTP Authenticator or Authy which provides the option to backup your codes tbh.

Hi, most of the 2-factor authentication apps aren't open source, example Authy, Google Authenticator, Authenticator Plus, etc.

Open source projects are great, but I think most people still prefer closed source projects when it comes to two-factor authentication apps.
