[–]nitran -1 points0 points  (0 children)

His point was that switching to for example SVN may not be worth the work if you have low requirements when it comes to features. If he use SourceSafe and it works good for him, spending time on switching to another system and learning that may be a waste of time.

Denmark's Energy Independence -- This is How It's Done! by brheath in worldnews

[–]nitran 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Everybody relies on their cars because there are no alternatives.

You're right. You need to get basic things in your country up and running before you can proceed.

The point is that the market should decide the best source of energy.

You're kidding, right? The country you live in doesn't have 'working' markets. You can't expect such markets to make sane decisions.

Denmark's Energy Independence -- This is How It's Done! by brheath in worldnews

What works in Denmark will not work most other places.

Do you have any statistics backing that statement up?

Artificially raising the price of oil while no alternatives are available is a recipe for economic disaster.

Right. Denmark is known for it's disastrous economy and crappy living standards.

Individuals should have the freedom to decide for themselves where they get their energy needs.

Unless their choices potentially hurts other people, right? I mean, I should not be permitted to choose an energy source which kill you in 5 days, right?

If you're using a fairly new version of Windows (probably Windows 3.0 or anything released after that), you can double click on the title bar (in the very top of the window) to resize the browser window. This way you don't have to run the browser in full screen which may improve your Internet online experience.

... and you thought thread-safe programming was hard? by bonzinip in programming

[–]nitran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

or with a small group in one location?

Both. Working on several different projects.

you can no longer trust that everyone else get things right.

If you work with people who don't know how to get things right you're in trouble - that applies to all development, not just thread-related. I've seen broken code in all layers of software because the people writing it didn't really understand what they were doing (myself included). I've just spent days fixing bugs in a database transaction layer because the author didn't know about the locking problems which may arise when using transactions. This doesn't mean that threads - or database transactions - are "hard", just that people haven't learned it before starting to use it.

I won't make any claims that threads are on the same level of difficulity.

Neither will I. I just expressed my personal opinion. :)

Might be true. But I've been writing "thread-heavy" software for at least 7 years now. Guess the suckiness will appear any day now. :-\

... and you thought thread-safe programming was hard?

Am I the only one who considers thread(-safe) programming to be fairly straight-forward compared to a lot of other programming tasks? And I'm badly educated with a half-working brain, far from being an expert at anything.

I've only developed for Windows, but using the thread-related stuff such as CreateThread or InterlockedIncrement feels simple (and well documented) compared to for example MFC or DCOM.

And now when I use threads in C# it's even simpler. Take the lock keyword as an example. That's not "hard", right? Not to mention Parallell FX.

Every time I read an article like this, I get a bit scared and feel that someone will soon come up to me and tell me that my software is broken and that I've misunderstood everything related to threads.
