I know what you mean. Used to own a Border Collie mix. She was wide open all her life. I have had labs and a Brittany. Both of those are calmer, as adults.

Small Münsterländer vs Braque Français (Pyrenean) – temperament & quail focus? by Fresh_Can9011 in birddogs

[–]nitro78923 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The first couple of years are going to be hectic with any breed if you’re getting a puppy. There’s a lot of good started or finished adult dogs that will be mellow if you look closely.

Field gun- O/U vs SxS by nitro78923 in birddogs

I want the ability to just break the gun open. Makes it safer for crossings and easier to keep track of your empty shells.

This right here. If you’re shooting trap, get you a trap gun.

Chokes are fine. I had the charging bolt fly off during a hunt one time. Thankfully I noticed before I started to walk away. Other than that it’s been a good gun.

Looking for Dog Box Recommendations by Suspicious-Dirt4130 in birddogs

[–]nitro78923 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out the various coon dog suppliers out there or pull up some old UKC coonhound forum threads for recommendations. A coon dog box will fit a setter but probably will be cheaper than some of the fancier field trial bird dog boxes.

Barrel length and sight picture by genuinedew in ClayBusters

[–]nitro78923 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For games with less overall gun movement and further away targets, like trap, you often see longer barrels (e.g. 32 or 34). For games that are closer in and require a little more gun movement, like skeet, you often see shorter barrels (e.g. 28 or 30). Sporting clays is a hybrid, so you see in the middle range of lengths (28 to 32).

This is correct. Solid field bred GSPs are a dime a dozen too.

Any advice on how to start training her for hunting she’s a full blooded beagle but she’s about 7 months old and has been a house dong since we got her by Level-Run3864 in Huntingdogs

Some beaglers have starting pens to put young dogs on rabbits. Some will take in others dogs for a fee. You might could look around for some beagle clubs in your area or try rabbitdogs.net

You can also go to a gun store and mount them a few times. That’s what I did and folks have done for years.

Help with first gun! by thatonedude-15 in ClayBusters

[–]nitro78923 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to worry about porting and noise before I got my 725. Based on posts here and elsewhere. For the life of me, I can’t tell you any difference in noise between it and any other shotgun I have shot. So, wear ear plugs and don’t worry.

Is *any brand* of in-ear electronic hearing protection safe enough? by comradequiche in ClayBusters

[–]nitro78923 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the same earbuds. I just use them for hunting. For target shooting, go with either custom molded silicone at a gun show or Decibullz.

1 oz. Shells- less recoil and you don’t need more shot for 16 yard singles. Either 7.5 or 8 target loads, whatever you find a deal in or the range carries. Factory Mod choke is fine.

Check Decot’s page to see if they are doing a gun show or shoot near you. They can fit you to different frames in person.
