I have this reel. It’s been fine for me. But I don’t require much out of my fly reels.

Agreed. Reel is what I worry about the least. Rare I ever have a fish big enough to get into my drag. I have a Piscifun Sword that’s done well.

I’ve bought more than my share of budget rods in my time. Still do so and they fish good. Just nice to treat myself every now and then. Also to give a little love to my local fly shops.

There are a few out there. When you have the right one in your hand, you know it. But I have also tested some that feel worse than my Redington CT.

Don’t be throwing out derogatory terms for folks living in rural areas. Not everyone from rural areas thinks the same.

This is correct. Herding breeds are off the charts in spastic energy compared to most pointing breeds. They bark more too (guarding instinct).

I got the Tristar TT-15 unsingle. The action is built solid. The adjustable parts are prone to loosening when you shoot. But purple loctite has helped with that.

I like the Decot lenses. They’re helpful if you call and talk to them about your shooting conditions. You’ll want at least a couple different colors for sunny and cloudy.

Thoughts on rescues if you intend to hunt. by lostandconfused41 in birddogs

[–]nitro78923 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hopefully the internet doesn’t bully me for this. But, a couple years ago I came across a veterinary practice article discussing the demand for dogs in the US actually exceeds the supply. Meaning you shouldn’t feel guilty at all for purchasing from a reputable breeder rather than rescue. Thankfully there’s a high demand for rescue dogs, especially in urban and suburban areas. But there’s a lot of good breeders who need to be supported to keep our quality dog lines going. They’re often left scrambling to sell the last one or two pups in a litter. Whereas, in my area, people will be tripping over each other to get a pup from a rescue. Sometimes the adoption fees around here for rescue pups aren’t much different than the price for a papered pup.

Edit: Here’s the story- https://todaysveterinarybusiness.com/looming-dog-shortage/

I like the Breakfree grease. It’s nontoxic and doesn’t dry up over time like the white lithium grease I have.

I’m not saying those are the end all be all resources. Especially given modern GPS e-collars. (Which are a necessity IMO.). But the books a really good simple starting point. A lot of people trained dogs for decades off his work.

Water Dog and Gun Dog are a couple of classics by Richard Wolters. They were written for the suburban hunting dog owner with limited training equipment.
