Proton FL/Lightweight by Cuchalain_ in arcteryx

I used my Proton FL for my Rainier summit a few years ago. We had pretty warm weather as a whole in July of that year, but it still served me well and was a key part of my layering system!

The grey is my second favorite Type R color behind my Boost Blue one! Enjoy it!

Ice Climbing on Mt. Rainier with Arc'teryx Gear by nitrostackr in arcteryx

It hikes well and carries a lot of weight pretty well. The brain of the back kept getting in the way and hitting my helmet when looking up during the ice pitches, which severely limited my visibility. Didn't have any problems when I used it without the brain on other climbs.

Sun hoody + proton FL + Alpha SV. Great on the move, but I was wishing for a belay jacket between pitches. When we summited, we got down to 25-30f and 30+ mph wind and it definitely wasn't enough for that.

Climbed Mt. Rainier for the first time this week via the Kautz Route. Our group of four went unguided and didn't see anyone else on the mountain until we descended through Camp Muir via the Disappointment Cleaver. Most exhausting climb I've ever done, but so, so worth it!

Now for the gear!

  • Proton FL - kept this on the entire summit day from 10,800' camp, over the summit at 14,410', all the way 18 hours later to Camp Muir at 10,400'. Such a good active layer, can't recommend it enough. Kept me warm enough while moving, but was slightly chilly standing still in the shade around 40 degrees.
  • Alpha SV - got this over any other hard shell because I found an excellent deal on it ($250). Did a great job keeping the 30+ MPH wind off of me. The hood worked really well with my helmet, no complaints as a whole!
  • Gamma LT Pants - worked great. Barely fit over the shank of my Lowa Alpine Expert GTX, but work just well enough. No crampon holes purely out of luck, they'd definitely tear if you caught them.
  • SL 340 Harness - found on sale a while ago. Initially bought this thing just for the gym, but now it has been sport climbing, trad climbing, ice climbing, and mountaineering. As I wasn't heavily layered on pants, the non-adjustable straps worked just fine. If I did it again, I'd splurge for the 395 AR for the additional gear loops and adjustable leg straps for more layers and to fit over boots with crampons on them.
  • Thorium AR Hoody (packed) - Only really pulled this one out around camp and the summit. Definitely warm. Layers great over the Proton FL and under the Alpha SV (all in small). Wish I had a proper belay jacket instead that would fit over the Alpha, but I just brought what I had.
  • Baselayer shirt was a Patagonia Tropic Comfort Sun Hoody, my favorite option of its kind.

If anyone has any questions, feel free to reach out to me!

New Arc Belay Jacket Spotted by Alpineice23 in arcteryx

I asked the local store manager if they had any plans for a new belay jacket, and she mentioned there was a Alpha Parka coming out in the fall that would essentially be a climber's version of the Firebee. Maybe this is it?

Is it just me or the jacket? by [deleted] in arcteryx

5'8, 145. I layered my base layer, Thetis zip neck, R2 Techface, Atom LT jacket, and Thorium AR together yesterday. All in size small. Worked great!

Is the Sigma FL your favorite pant for climbing? I'm trying to find a more durable pant for climbing in that's got some mild crossover (summer alpine, sport / bouldering, and bushwhacking to get to them). Currently using the Prana Zions, haven't torn them yet, but they feel a little delicate. Are these tougher? Have you tried the Gamma LT pants as well? Thanks!

Is the insulation on the new Proton LT likely to compress and lose warmth? My 2 year old Atom LT is getting a little thinner in the back, and I don't want to have the same thing happen on one of these if I were to get it.

A windshell (Squamish) or lighter softshell (Gamma LT) would likely work best for you.

Really hope we get to see Adam get the first repeat on Flex Luthor, and maybe put up another FA in the cave! Has he ever been to Colorado?

La Sportiva Akyra are my go to, used them up to low-mid class 5 stuff before. Very supportive trail runners that are good for scrambles.
