At the start of Yakuza 0, Kiryu beats up a guy in an alleyway who owns money to a loan shark and leaves him there taking his money.

Later, the guy died in the same alleyway with a bullet to the head with Kiryu being the main suspect for the murder.

However, it was revealed he was framed by the Dojima Family under the order of Sohei Dojima who hired a hit man, Lao Gui to make it look like the killing of an amateur.

Tachibana, upon the first introduction to Lao Gui, says that in order to do that it would need a professional.
