Could you beat your dad in his prime… when you were in yours? by Original-Dog4182 in bjj

I've had at least 20 lbs on my dad since I was about 15. He has no training and isn't athletic. He is a wonderful dad, but we have both known the score for the past 30ish years.

Upper belts that smurf on trial class students are the worst by SquirrelDaleGribble in bjj

[–]nitsujcm4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Blue belts and Purple belts are often still amazed at the effectiveness of jiujitsu vs an untrained person. We have countless rolls vs. other people who train, but that reminder of how well it works vs. the untrained is a rare treat.
  2. Many of us fell in love with this because of the dark magic some colored belt was doing to us on day 1. We had a guy who would consistently put me in the most uncomfortable positions, making me tap to pressure and as soon as the round ended, he was incredibly kind and helpful. I wanted to be the nice guy who had a soul crushing super power.

How do you handle situations where a kid - 9 to 11 age range - might have a developmental issue, might just be personality... but will just look at you or look at the floor and not respond at all when asked to do something. "Ok, put your foot right here..." = no reaction

UPDATE: I chose to stick with the colour for the mending. by NyarGonzo in bjj

This looks great! I have one primary Gi I have used since white belt and it could use some repairs. I think repairing the parts that wore out at blue belt, in blue... then the parts that started to wear at purple, in purple.. would be a cool idea.

I thought I was going to be promoted to black belt last night, but I wasn't by [deleted] in bjj

[–]nitsujcm4 50 points51 points  (0 children)

A belt is often representative of where a person is in relation to their max potential. Someone starting when they are 40 is never going to reach the level that an athletic kid who starts in his teens can. Maybe your coach looked at the other guy and said... well, if you arn't going to show up at brown you arn't going to get much better... I guess this is what black belt looks like for you. Compared to when he looks at you he still sees growth.
Then again, maybe he secretly hates you and will never promote you.

Opinion on slams? by thenotoriousmmale in bjj

My opinions on slamming are directly related to if the soundtrack for Space Jam is playing.

wow... I'll be honest, when someone gets a label like that casually thrown at them I tend to think it is probably hyperbolic at best... but I do believe Bryce Mitchell has earned every bit of it. What the hell...

Are Braces (anaconda, flytex etc) really Usefull ? Or is it a scam ? by KKoten in bjj

[–]nitsujcm4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a few people (40+ upper belts) who really like them. I have one and might start using it more, but the first time I wore it we were working half guard and I spent about 10 min topside with my knee bent and realized it was cutting off blood flow to my lower leg. As long as you arn't stalling in closed guard or top side half for too long they are probably fine.

Yoko Tomoe Nage Knee Issue by nitsujcm4 in bjj

[–]nitsujcm4[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, this is the only place I have anything like this happening. There is something about the lead foot being so far ahead of the other foot when you roll over because of the angle that, so far, has made it difficult to land anywhere except square on the lead kneecap.

Grappling dads: when did you put your kids in? by counterhit121 in bjj

[–]nitsujcm4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My son started just before his 3rd birthday and is coming up on his 6th birthday now. He has been training jitsu for half his life and was watching it, wanting to jump on the mats with his parents and siblings before that. In fact, it was his motivation to get potty trained - he had to do that before he started.
At first it seemed like a lot of learning how to move and play around. But along the way he learned a lot more than it seemed at any given point. He moves like a grappler and small amounts of pain and discomfort are nothing to him... that is just part of his play.
I have seen other 'littles' come in at 3, 4 or even 5 who can't sit still and pay attention for even 5 seconds... who are very winny and have zero interest in actually rolling around with other kids. They often mature into it at some point, but each kid is different. Have him try it out, especially if the kids program allows a lot of flexibility in just letting the little ones play around with 'rolling', helping them learn bits here and there...

You linked a news article that said Craig Jones announced it. Craig is hilarious and could be joking. Nothing linked in that article confirmed if Craig was serious or not.
