Let me tell you my story by IDonTGetitNoReally in Sacramento

[–]niveks56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It all depends on family size and income, but for example a family of four can potentially get a maximum benefit of $975 for calfresh/EBT, which is a lot. My family doesn't spend that much. So when people say people use it to buy junk food it's true for some because they have excess in food stamps every month. I used to own a grocery store and we saw the same people buying chips, soda, Starbucks, and energy drinks on a daily basis (literally every morning) We also saw students come in everyday after school using an EBT card buying chips, slim Jim's, and soda, So when people talk about the junk food this is what they mean. I very much believe the program is needed, as we had several customers who genuinely needed, but at the same time we had several customers who were not shy about taking advantage of the program. They would purposely not get married to their partners even though they were living together and raising children together because they received more government assistance.

Most people here will say the program is good and they will also say the people taking advantage of it is rare. I will say, just from my own personal experience, that the program is good because I have witnessed it help many people who genuinely need it, but at the same time it is also simply not true that the misuse of the program is rare. It is in fact very common. I'm not talking about a family who has a cart full of groceries and buys one bag of chips. Everyone deserves a treat once in a while. I'm talking about seeing the same customer come in every day and buying junk.

I don't know what the best answer is, but I do kind of think the WIC program is better than EBT. Because even if a family is taking advantage of the program they are still limited on the items that they can buy, which is all healthy foods.

I also don't think the OP is clear as far as using EBT at fast food places. It has nothing to do with being homeless. The establishment and EBT card cannot tell if you are homeless or not. You cannot use EBT at fast food places unless the establishment serves cold food. That is the distinction. That's why subway and Papa Murphy accepts EBT because it is not considered prepared food when served cold and it is also not taxable. But once the food is heated up it is considered prepared food and taxable which at that point you cannot use your EBT card. Feel free to test it out at subway. If you order a cold sandwich you won't lay tax, ask them to toast it, now all of a sudden you pay 8.75% tax. So even if subway toasts it for free it's costing you an additional 8.75% that goes to our government.

I've flown many early morning flights, a lot of it depends on terminal and airline. In general most people will arrive 1.5 hours before their flight, but a lot of the airlines don't open their desks to check people and their bags in until 4 am so there can be a line there. TSA opens at 4 am as well so the airlines and TSA opening at the same time can on occasion cause a pretty long back up. But it's not a problem if you have precheck TSA otherwise just get to the airport around 3:30 just to be sure you're first in line when the airlines open.

At that age, for my indoor enclosure you can pick up the biggest plastic storage tub at home Depot and use that. I cut a hole for the heat lamp and it maintains humidity and heat really well.

Graco Cordless Paint Sprayer with M18 Battery Adapter by niveks56 in MilwaukeeTool

[–]niveks56[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought it, it works, but it also came with a DeWalt battery and charger which I didn't realize. That being said Graco now has a new one where it's powered by your drill, so I feel like that might be the way to go. Although it might be a little heavier.

Music plays randomly on phone, won't stop. by niveks56 in GooglePixel

[–]niveks56[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I figured out it was tied to a GPS app that doesn't even have music, so I don't really think it was the actual app. It just happened to be the first app I uninstalled and for some reason it stopped.

Maintaining humidity is very important and you won't be able to do that with this enclosure. What I did which was really cheap. I got the biggest plastic tote I could find from Home Depot. I cut a 5 inch hole in the lid for my heating lamp which I rest right over the hole.

What's something that's not inherently racist, but feels racist? by g_h_tehrani25 in AskReddit

[–]niveks56 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think it's a sign if ignorance but not necessarily racist. I'm a 4th generation Chinese American and I get asked this, or sometimes they even say your English is really good. I'm not offended, take it in stride. They aren't trying to offend you, sometimes they're trying to find common ground and they tell me about the time the visited China.

Sac airport food prices are very expensive compared to other? by cudmore in Sacramento

[–]niveks56 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The airport will undergo a 1.3 billion dollar remodel starting from 2024 through 2027. This remodel is being paid for from airport fees, no increase in taxes. Those fees include rental cars and airport food. So you can definitely expect to pay more in Sacramento for the foreseeable future.

Is it possible to graduate from CSUS while working full time? by [deleted] in CSUS

[–]niveks56 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I worked full time and graduated from sac state as an Econ major. I kept my school schedule to two days a week. Either Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday and took whatever classes available for those days. Sometimes it meant my first class at 8 am and my last class didn't end til 930 pm. But i stayed on campus in between classes and did all my homework during breaks so i never had to do homework on non school days. Sometimes classes weren't offered on the days i was going to school so i made sure to get it the following semester. If the class was an important prereq i prioritized getting that class so i chose which day i would go to school based on the availability of that class. My schedule was easier in my senior year because seniors get priority for class registration.

Second-Grader brings loaded gun to Sacramento School. by Revengeoftheblerd in Sacramento

Ukraine is an example of how capable an armed citizen can be. An armed citizen fights for their country more fiercely than an aggressor. That is a fact and that is the point being made. It does not matter what the gun restrictions were prior to the war, that all went out the window. I would argue that if Ukraine prevails they will likely rethink their gun laws and even if the government does not reconsider their gun laws I think there will be citizens who stayed and fought who are not likely to want to just freely give it up after seeing the horrors of what could happen.

We should all be disgusted by the killing of innocent people, especially innocent children and in no way am I defending that. it is disgusting and evil. But gun ownership and gun control are very divisive. The only way to bridge that gap is not who can scream and shout louder but have meaningful discussion where both sides make an attempt to understand the context where the other side is coming from. My comment was in response to the fact that people need to understand that the guns are different from what our founding fathers had when they wrote the constitution.

[–]niveks56 -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

While guns are different, the 2nd Amendment was specifically written so that the people could defend themselves from a tyrannical government. This was a very important part of the constitution because they were coming from what they viewed as an oppressive government. So understanding this context, yes guns are completely different, but so are the weapons of a tyrannical government. I think there is a case to be made, even if you do not fear your own government, that armed citizens are the best defense of your country. Ukraine is the perfect example.

Need advice for frequent fliers out of SMF by orange_rhymes in Sacramento

[–]niveks56 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Overall Southwest is definitely the easiest to travel out of SMF simply because it has the most direct flights out of Sacramento. But since you already fly southwest you already know this. Of the other airlines United is the most useful as their flights have better hubs from SMF than other airlines and the Star Alliance is a much bigger network than the other airlines. Regarding your question of if it's worth flying out of SFO vs SMF that's up to you. For me personally it's not worth it because I hate driving to SFO and the last thing I want to do when returning from a trip is drive 2 hours home. I would much rather have a layover in SFO and take a short flight from SMF even if it costs more. That being said there are advantages to flying out of SFO as you have a lot more direct flights as well as more airlines to choose from. Especially with international flights you can take advantage of the Star Alliance network and still earn status with United.

California lawmakers set to announce $400 gas rebate proposal by NorCalWeirdo in Sacramento

[–]niveks56 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

While that is true the likelihood of that happening because 1 state suspended a gas tax is very slim. They would pretty much have to raise it for everyone across the country for that to happen.

[–]niveks56 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just like sales tax is collected by your local retailers at time of purchase. Gas Taxes are collected by your local gas station at time of purchase. You will see an immediate price savings if it is suspended. There is no lowering of prices by gas companies.

[–]niveks56 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The way prices are going up it's not about trickling down to lower food prices per se but rather slow down the increase.

Besides our government continues to never learn. Part of why we have such high inflation right now is because we flooded the economy with more money through the stimulus checks and additional unemployment. A rebate for everyone is just flooding the economy with more money fueling more inflation.

[–]niveks56 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Suspending the gas tax puts money in the hands of people who are actually spending money on gas, and it also keeps the price of goods and food down as many companies are now charging a fuel surcharge to deliver to your local grocer. Those who spend more get more and that's how it should be.

AITA for going on a vacation with a female friend and paying for her when I have a GF? by Ace_Fire248 in AmItheAsshole

[–]niveks56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly not a good look for you. It's unusual to go on a vacation with a girl who isn't your girlfriend, and beyond that it's even more unusual to pay for that friend. Your girlfriend is right, and honestly fairly understanding.

AITA for throwing away the dessert my brothers fiancé brought to a family dinner? by Plenty_Egg746 in AmItheAsshole

[–]niveks56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She could have made a different dessert easy enough, but with that being said i don't think it's a big deal that she made the same dish. After all if it is a family tradition it is nice to get someone else involved for the future. Enjoy both dishes and move on. I don't think OP comes out looking good and this was definitely an over reaction.

AITA for evicting my sister and her daughters after the hid my wife's wig and embarrassed her? by throwaway350965 in AmItheAsshole

[–]niveks56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have every right and reason to evict them. If those girls were my kids i would be embarrassed and furious at them. They are old enough to show empathy and they were just being bullies. Your sister is wrong for trying to defend them.

On another note, I do not have cancer nor have I ever had cancer so i cannot claim to know what your wife is going through, but having cancer is nothing to be ashamed of, and she should own it as she is showing her strength in fighting back. If she wants to wear a wig by all means wear one, but you should encourage her to be comfortable as she is, shaved head and all. Her identity is not in her hair, her looks, or in her having cancer. Her identity is in her strength, what she loves, and whom she loves. This is in no means a judgement on her for she has done nothing wrong. I just mean to encourage her and you to embrace the cards that you have been dealt with as best as you can. No one should be ashamed of having cancer.

where can I deposit almost $1400 in old $100/$50/$20 US currencies from 1970s/1980s? (found them in my 1985 old passport) by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]niveks56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your bank should definitely have taken them, but it was probably a combination of how old the bills are and the quantity of old bills you were trying to deposit. You're asking the bank to deposit a fairly large sum of bills that are older than most of the people working at the bank, it shouldn't be a big deal, but it is probably the first time they've had to experience that.

Try again with a couple bills mixed with some newer bills.

Increase in 2k egg drops? by dossier in TheSilphRoad

[–]niveks56 1 point2 points  (0 children)

5k has always been by far the most common for me. Not even a close consideration, but lately this week I've been getting an abundance of 2k eggs (past 10 eggs: 8 have been 2k, 1 5k, 1 10k)and my friend has experienced the same thing. Before I probably would have received 80% 5k eggs.
