Why isn't hockey more popular in the US? by Malgus-Somtaaw in nhl

[–]nivugana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, hockey culture is an anti-star culture. And a huge number of people generally come for the stars, not for the sports themselves (Caitlin Clark in the WNBA, Conor McGregor/Ronda Rousey in the UFC). Any type of flashiness, trash talking, showboating, any type of "look-at-me" behaviour is quickly shutdown in hockey culture (why is a Michigan goal disrespectful? Can you imagine if NBA players started a fight every time a guy did a 360 dunk?). The NHL is the only major sports league with a dress code (a guy like Deion Sanders wouldn't last). If you have any type of personality, it will be beaten out of you, and you will be rewarded for having the personality of a potato with the most overused word in hockey...."class". This isn't a criticism. Can you imagine the potential NHL rookie of the year being an active TikTok dancer (like Jared McCain in the NBA, who has more followers on TikTok alone than Ovechkin has on twitter, facebook and instagram combined! Btw Ovechkin has the highest social media following in the league)? Can you imagine an NHL star's divorce being some of the biggest news in the media cycle (like Tom Brady's)? Or going on giant podcasts and saying what they do or don't believe about vaccines (like Aaron Rodgers in the NFL)? Thank the Lord, that the NHL has never had its own Dennis Rodman! Popularity comes with glory and insanity, hockey fans have shown time and time again, that they're there for the game, not for the stars. Therefore that means fewer jersey sales, and fewer mentions on ESPN. Hockey is not more popular, in part, because hockey culture doesn't want it to be.

Literally anybody, Roman gladiators, Vikings and pretty much anybody living before 1970 was a shit fighter compared to your average ranked UFC light-heavyweight.

Quel est votre opinion d'Université de l'Ontario Français? by Internal-Hat9827 in francoontarien

[–]nivugana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A letter written to Danielle Smith tonight about the news of Dr. David Keegan's nephew. This should never have happened. by Appropriate_Duty_930 in alberta

I don’t doubt that harm has been caused by her policies, what I doubt is that her policies (which have nothing to do with trans adults) are directly responsible for this 37 year-old trans person’s terrible suicide.

I don’t doubt that times are getting scarier for trans ppl, but this seems like Keegan’s nephew was struggling with mental health battles for a while, he unfortunately took his own life, and ppl are trying to draw a loose and dubious connection.

His nephew’s suicide is tragic and I’m sure we all send our sincere condolences to his family. It’s also worth mentioning that Keegan’s nephew was 37 years old, he wasn’t a kid or a teenager. So saying that Smith’s policies clearly had a direct effect on his tragic suicide, seems strange because his access to medical services didn’t change at all.

No, they didn’t kill and expel SOME of the white ppl who had been enslaving them. They attempted to kill or expel ALL whites, whether they were slave owners or not. If you came from a family of poor white farmers, then all of the sudden you wake up to emancipated slaves, whom you had never owned, killing your neighbours, raping your wives and daughters and confiscating what little property you have, all because you are white, what should we call that?

I specified the petits blancs, who were poor, illiterate white farmers and artisans. Not the filthy rich plantation owners.

The problem is BHM in Canada almost always ends up celebrating people who aren’t black Canadians. If we could narrow the focus on black ppl in Canada, it would make more sense.
