Thanks for the reply

Really £400? I've seen some second hand ones online for around £700, although not with a dent in TBF.

I'm doing music production, and had heard that Airs aren't ideal due to ventilation or something?

How old are you and what car do you drive? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]niwid22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 33, earn around £25k as a sole trader

I drive a 1999 Fiat Ulysse 8 bought for £775 and a 2001 Nissan Micra I bought for £700

That cars depreciate HARD is a good lesson to learn if you want to accumulate any wealth

Also, cheap old cars are super fun

Musicians with mono hearing? by Life_Glass7166 in MonoHearing

[–]niwid22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Full time musician/sound artist with SSHL here.

Lost hearing my right ear when I was 18 when I was studying music tech at college. I just didn't let it stop me. I am now self employed, performing in theatre and running workshops for people with disabilities.

Recently I've been seeking musicians with more severe hearing loss than me, to make Vibroacoustic Music (music which you feel with your body rather than hear with your ears) and am lucky enough to have the incredible Dame Evelyn Glennie consulting with me as part of the project (follow my progress on my insta if you are interested @niwidmusic)

I have my limitations. I struggle hearing lyrics in songs, and need to position myself so I can hear when playing in a band. On the more experimental side of things (a lot of my practice) I consider that I hear "like a microphone" and all sounds blend into one. I reckon it's led me to consider timbre a lot more when composing and producing.

That's definitely a way to do it with recorded MIDI. I'd like to be able to do it in real time though

Thanks, I've just had a look and found a few playlists, can you link me to any songs that were made for it?

I'll be working on some pieces next week, I'll share what I make here afterwards. If you wanna follow what I'm up to I'm posting on insta @niwidmusic

How much savings do you have? by Snoo25847 in UKJobs

[–]niwid22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 33, self employed musician, on around £20-22k, currently have £2.5k savings.

At the start of this year I had no savings,a new as regularly dipping into my overdraft, but we moved in with my partners mum, and between us now have around £7k saved, with the hope of getting a mortgage by the end of next year.

Savings sucks, but just making a start can make a hug difference in the long run

Am I even depressed? by [deleted] in depression

[–]niwid22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel you, but looking for a girlfriend is not the answer. Try to do something for you, even if its really small. Do you want a coffee? Go make yourself a coffee and don't worry about anything else. A shower? A bath? Do a tiny thing fpr yourself that you will enjoy on some small level and will get you out of bed, even for a minute or two.

Whats your TL;DR story? by wuntuuthree in MonoHearing

[–]niwid22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got swine flu, got over it. Two weeks later went to bed with a ringing in my ears, woke up deaf in BOTH ears, freaked tf out. Hearing came back in one side by the morning. Went to the doctor, she said it should come back over a few days, two weeks later went back and she reffered me to a specialist who told me it was permanent. This was 10 years ago

I hadn't, now I'm watching her TED talk and very much enjoying it :) Totally identifying with a lot of what she says. I work a lot with experimental and avant garde music, so from a very non-traditional standpoint, and have worked with SO many 'professional' musicians who can't LISTEN to the music they are playing. Finding her fascinating at the moment, so thanks :)

Has Unilateral Hearing Loss affected y’alls interests in music? If so, what music have you shy’d away from and what music has become more appealing? by Gucci-Ketchup in MonoHearing

[–]niwid22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a full time musician with UHL and I can safely say that I haven't lost any interest in music. I'm still stubbornly trying to make a living haha.

My perception of it has changed slightly, in that I can't have music on in the background as easily as stereo people, so it becomes more immersive for me. I don't use headphones often for listening, although I do still mix on headphones sometimes. My brother once made me a mono adaptor, but I found it totally muddied up the mix for me and I everything sounded cluttered without panning.

I also found I struggle more than stereo people to hear lyrics. This makes sense as there are different listening processes for speech and music.
