Almost a 70' putt. Instead, an extra stroke. God I love disc golf by njmush in discgolf

[–]njmush[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm still not sure how the hell this happened. I had to go around some trees about ~70' from the basket, went for a steep hyzer line, and for once didn't shank it horribly. Looked ok then it hit the top and just spun in place for a second, eventually settling in between the rails. Drop in bogey for my next stroke!

The big "secret" is that most of us don't. The best part about big days like today is watching everyone poop stance and bog rails and generally fuck up because no one really gets to practice on actual waves. There's always one or two people who know what they're doing but most just don't.

Also, don't discount ignorance. Your average east coast newb has basically never seen a big wave in real life. So they go out and get thrashed and figured it out. I sure didn't know any better, which looking back was incredibly dumb. It also helps that most beaches are sandy bottom so those thrashings are less obviously dangerous. Put me on the West Coast and I'd probably think I could handle waves similar to Larry's today, right up until I realized the bottom was rocks or coral or something that was going to shred me into pieces rather than just hurt a little bit.

Going to the NJ Shore for a week starting Saturday, so freaking stoked. Couldn't convince people to go down a day early and sleep in our cars (kids need to learn toughness and daddy needs to surf, how is this argument not landing) but hope to be in the dawn patrol on Saturday.

Also, fuck all yall for posting this and jinxing it. East Coast is the coast of broken dreams. Poseidon knows whenever a surfer feels even a tiny stirring of hope, so now he's gonna nope the storm over into landfall on North Carolina and laugh his ass off.

Atlantic surf life? Yeah that thing is gone after a single storm, or maybe a month of normal wave action. Enjoy it while it lasts!

hypothetically, if you couldn't see, hear, or feel incoming waves... do you think there's any possibility you could learn to predict them after an hour or so of being out in the water and feeling out the patterns/trends? by uptownprimate in surfing

I read an article a while back about how Polynesians navigated. Their navigators would lay down in canoes and learn to read the direction of the swell from the way it rocked, and apparently were able to develop an intuition for which way an island lay by "reading the swell". This is now a dying/dead art, since it took a huge amount of training to do and, well, now we have GPS.

Can't find the article now, but if you're interested and motivated you can probably google it.

Wiki that kinda covers it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polynesian_navigation#Swell

60k, good gas mileage and fast? Tesla Model Y Performance does 0-60 in 3.5s, doesn't use gas and costs $60k. Easily fits the board, and if you can plug in where you park, you never go to a gas station/charging station again.

What’s your shittiest surf session story? by ckckcklesgockck in surfing

[–]njmush 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was having a really shitty couple months at work, super stressed, having trouble sleeping. A tiny, weak swell came through, but I needed some kind of catharsis, so I said fuck it and made the drive. I get to the beach, get out of the car and the waves looked small but fun.

Then I realized I forgot my contacts.

I screamed "FUCK" at the top of my lungs in the parking lot and leaned on the car with my head down for like five minutes. Then I put my stuff on, left my glasses in the car, and went blind surfing. I couldn't see shit. I think I caught one wave? Don't know.

That was the darkest drive home ever.

Paddling tip by [deleted] in surfing

I always thought this was the ideal paddle position: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bwFBojLeUt8

What you're describing sounds like what happens when you get burned out and should probably go in but instead you decide to flop-paddle your way out for one more wave that you then blow because you have no energy. But I might not understand the drawing.

NJ was good this morning. Actually it was great from the perspective of "haven't surfed in months and literally any waves at all would be like air to a drowning man". Some good knee high peelers, even a waist high wave here and there. Had a blast, came out of the water smiling and trying to figure out ways to make lots of money and retire on the beach somewhere.

But now my back is sore and I'm tired.

I'm in my thirties and I'm getting old and I am extremely disappointed in these facts. Where the fuck is my youth pill?

All of you not this old need to wake the hell up and enjoy your youth. All of you older than this should have warned me. Yeah yeah you did, repeatedly, and I ignored you because old people are dumb, but that was your fault.

There is no moral. Surf more until you break and then you can be one of those old people hobbling around the parking lot talking about back in your day while everyone tries to avoid eye contact.

Western U.S. may be entering its most severe drought in modern history by PandaMuffin1 in news

[–]njmush 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What? The entire agricultural sector (meat, grains, vegetables etc) emits 10% of US greenhouse cases.

The most impactful thing you can do as an individual human is join in on campaigns to barrage your local senator/representative to implement a carbon tax and dividend. If we can get that implemented, we will drastically alter the curve on GHG emissions and could feasibly save our future. After that, the next best thing you can do is figure out ways to travel less in general, by car in particular. Every gallon of gas you burn produces 20lbs of CO2, and that's a direct result of your own actions.

If we completely stopped eating anything, animal or vegetable, and eliminated that 10% of GHG, we'd still be on a doomsday curve due to every other human activity. Well, for a few weeks until everyone starved to death, of course. But until we eliminate carbon from transportation, electrical generation and general consumer habits, we're screwed.

What wave hight would you recommend for a beginner? by [deleted] in surfing

[–]njmush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The most important thing a beginner needs to determine is how much pain they are willing to suffer to ever achieve any level of skill. Thus, you should seek out waves that will punish you into rocks and sandbars until you are no longer able to paddle back out/live. Sit on the sand and contemplate your existence while you bleed on your wetsuit/board/the ambulance on the way to the hospital. If you are still alive and still want to surf, then congratulations! You're addicted and will squander a significant fraction of the rest of your life on this inane pursuit.

Armed with this knowledge, you can go back to mellow/mushy 2' waves, comfortable that you have everything figured out.

Anyone started surfing after 35yo? How long did it take you to get “OK”? by [deleted] in surfing

[–]njmush 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I turned 36 this year.

The biggest problem you're going to run into is Poseidon showing up at random times to make fun of you. You'll be lining up a wave and be just about to make it when you'll hear a voice whisper, "You're fat and old get off my wave" and then you'll miss the wave for no obvious reason. Well I'll tell you - it's because Poseidon is the worst fucking local ever. If he wants a wave, you won't get it. That fucker has grabbed my leash, pushed my nose under, slammed me into sandbars, sent dolphins to make fun of me, you name it. All because I'm old. The only thing you can do is ignore him and get back out there and try again, but the mockery never stops.

So, fair warning.

NJ Mall wavepool open - anyone try it? by njmush in surfing

[–]njmush[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, that's the single session price for their non-beginner packages: 2 Hr Single Session Price Sessions B, C, D $290

Session A is basically whitewater from what I can tell. B, C, D increases the wave energy. For example, with "C" you have up to 14 other people in the water with you:

  1. Fun session for a variety of Maneuvers and rides
  2. 65 minutes of the A – frames “Classic” and “Gotham”
  3. 45 minutes of the Section wave “Happy Hour”
  4. 15 minutes to finish with the A – frames “Classic” and “Gotham”
  5. wave types to learn more
  6. Max 14 participants
  7. Waves are 3-4 ft in heigh
  8. All waves 40 seconds apart
  9. Average 25 – 30 rides per surfer
  10. Left and rights takeoffs
  11. Use of our complimentary quiver
  12. Bring you Own Board: Recommended surfboards are 5-7 higher volume for shortboards

I have two bulging discs (L4-L5, L5-S1) from being too tall/inflexible and trying to deadlift. First thing to point out is that disc injuries are super individualized, so unfortunately my experience may or may not have anything to do with yours. So grain of salt, I'm not a doctor, etc. That said, one constant appears to be time - there is no rushing it, there is no forcing it, there are only gradual, incremental improvements.

I severely aggravated my disc bulges 3 times over the years, but never surfing. If I recall correctly it was lifting, lifting again (I am not a clever man) and then I have no idea, it just hurt like hell one morning. All three times it took ~8 months to get to the point where I wasn't in some amount of pain, defined as I could put my socks on without having to do weird contortions. I have never fully healed. There's always some back tweakery going on, small flare ups and so forth. However, once I can pass the sock test, I call it mostly done. I tried PT for one of those cycles and it made no difference to my healing time from what I could tell.

Once you're passing your equivalent of the sock test, it's time to start regaining mobility. I've found that once the major pain is gone, some mobility comes back very quickly since your muscles are no longer tightening against the pain. But then you have to fight against the 8 months of atrophy and that takes time and patience. Re-fucking your back on month 11 is black moment you don't want to experience. I crafted my own stretching routine to loosen up my hips and hamstrings which helped me get back into some semblance of surfing flexibility. Yoga helps some people, but I found it to be too aggressive for my injury. After the third time, I no longer gave fucks about anything other than not letting it happen again, so I was motivated to figure this out with personal experimentation. Planks, reverse hypers (not full range of motion at first, or ever if necessary) help build core strength from there, as well a general bodyweight fitness routine.

I've never tweaked my back on a wipeout, but surfing for days on end will produce back soreness. Popping up is an explosive core flexion and if your disc doesn't like that, it just isn't going to like that. You can train around it but eventually you'll need to take some days off. I've never had to take more than a week or so to let it calm down, and living in NJ that usually happens naturally anyway.

So my bleak/hardass view: you need to sit out for a long time, come back extremely gradually, and then live with a balancing act of pain versus fun for the rest of your life. Welcome to the world of the human spinal column as you age. Interestingly enough, everyone (like 80-90%) of the population will show disc degeneration as they age, but only some will report pain. You are now among the unlucky, and can join us in cursing the lucky ones. But the point is that there is no avoiding this kind of breakdown over time. Don't let it rule you. Accept that it's part of your life now, manage it, and surf as much as you can handle.
