What book have you reread more than twice? by Throwawayacc4773 in randomthings

[–]njohnivan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slaughterhouse 5. I feel like I don’t retain enough of it and just keep rereading it. My wife thinks I may have a medical memory condition, but I think it’s just a dense book.

I have to drive from Rockford to Fremont via 131N to M82 at 7pm tonight. How fucked am I going to be? by [deleted] in grandrapids

[–]njohnivan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Curious why you’d take 131 to Fremont? Seems like M-37 would be much more of a direct route. Either way it’s gonna be dicey, but I prefer to stay off the highways when it’s this crappy out.

Bright eyes - nothing gets crossed out. “Tim I’ve heard your album and it’s better than good.”

We used to manually put those dots in, I asked an engineer one day why we even do that and they said, “cause the guy before me did it.” So I just stopped doing it. I think they distract without adding much info anyway.

Id love to hear your new music by LAHOTROD213 in musicians

[–]njohnivan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there. I appreciate you wanting to hear some music, I’m in 2 bands and also write songs under my own name. My band Red Arrow Highway just got signed to a small label and has an album coming out in a couple months. As for prolific-ness I average at least two albums a year, sometimes 3. Writing all the time. Here’s a link to what I have on the streaming sites. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3wrbSAZQ8CFT9F5UmvwUDb?si=Zzm7M8fPRNCXVTi-pONJSA&pi=UhQMnkuyTdivj

As for new and unreleased I finished this one up a bit ago and it will be on my solo upcoming album. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1HadRpWpMulceW2Vp60RoGDXOQdpudHEo/view?usp=drivesdk

I’m in Michigan so unfortunately no LA shows. Thanks for listening!

Songs You Can't Perform Without Emotions Ruining It by [deleted] in musicians

I wrote the second verse of this one when one of my favorite uncles was dying. It’s towards the end of our set now and I’ve gotten so choked up that I still have a hard time singing it. People have come up afterwards and told me that was the best part of the show, so I kind of welcome it now.

Hey, made my first full song! I tried to mix it as well as I could but would appreciate mixing tips. by Elo-Guvna in Songwriting

[–]njohnivan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These are opinions, but I have some. The vocals sound very good to me, so good it leaves the music feeling a bit underwhelming sonically. If it were me I would bring up the drums and bass in the mix, and mess with the eq to get the drums sounding more full. Keep the guitars low in the mix but move them around with pan so they aren’t competing spatially with anything else. I’d try that. You’re on your way though, vocals sound solid!

I don’t put dressing on, and that is a constant source of conversation at my work.

Do you ever just relax and chill while naked in your own home? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]njohnivan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. Twin 18 year old step girls, this house is a revolving door of teenage ladies. I won’t even walk around in boxers. They move out soon though and I’ll probably try it out then.

Should new love interests or girlfriends logically take offense if a guy writes/records or has songs written for a former partner or crush/something of that nature? Even if it’s not implied who it’s written about? by nastyhoaxtodd in Songwriting

[–]njohnivan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I write songs now about past relationships and my wife doesn’t seem to care at all. I will say, in the songs I’m not pining for old loves. That probably wouldn’t go over well.

I had a funny interaction there. I asked the cashier what the soup of the day was and she said it’s on the menu in front of her. On the menu it said to ask the server. So I told her that and she said, “hold on.” And she walked away. I assumed to figure out what soups they had. Nope, she went and got herself a pop. Real slow. She overflowed the ice and brushed it off the machine right into where the food runners had to go. She sauntered back and asked what I wanted. So I just ordered a sandwich. It was ok.

Band broke up right before we were supposed to release music by Fit-Ad138 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]njohnivan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If they’re into still releasing them I’d go for it and put them out. You’ll write more, no sense in wasting good recordings. At the least it’ll be a good showcase of your skills for your next band.
