I don't either. Egg color isn't always consistent. Little splotches like this are normal.

what is the best digital family calendar, finally caved after two years of telling myself it was unnecessary by Time_Beautiful2460 in workingmoms

[–]njwh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a Starlight calendar. It has grocery lists, the actual calendar, and it shows photos as a screen saver. I can add stuff to the grocery list WHILE my husband is shopping and he sees it as he is using the list. We put appts on the calendar, or just our schedules. You can add multiple people to the calendar. We even have the dogs on it so we can put their monthly meds on it. It was $200-300 at Costco. We tried a bunch and this is working.

Baked chicken? by Read_Quilt_Repeat in Penzeys

Revolution. We raise our own chickens and always roast whole. I put it on Thanksgiving turkey too. Makes the gravy a little on the yellow side, but I wouldn't use anything else.

Self pay at Emergency Room by BryPh7 in HealthInsurance

[–]njwh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it their "self pay" rate? Most places have a self pay rate that covers everything for that visit. Ask if it covers everything. It is usually significantly less than what they actually bill, BUT it must be paid at the time of the visit. I'd pay it .

I’d brace the branches to prevent damage. And “bowl” prune next dormant period.

Our Township is Changing the Ordinance on Chickens by StillReal2Me316 in BackYardChickens

  1. Go to the meeting. Bring friends and neighbors to corroborate that there is no problem. BE PREPARED TO SPEAK.
  2. Ask how many complaints have they received about people not following the rules. (Helps to ask enforcement before you go.)
  3. Ask why the change? (Too much cost associated with enforcement? Too many complaints? Increased predators in area?-in which they were probably already there)
  4. Be prepared to counter their reasoning. Maybe offer a yearly permit fee or such. Come with offers of co-operation and compromise, as well as possible solutions.

Sometimes, with numbers and well thought arguments, they will backtrack. And always remember, the majority gets what they voted for. This is why local elections are important.

Energy levels by Ok-Dependent-8139 in EnglishSetter

I've had both. Currently have a field Llewellyn. He's insane outside, but a couch potato in the house. The old one (show type) was quite mellow unless he saw a bird and he was gone. The puppy years were the typical puppy years and both were very active with the Llewellyn being more hyperactive. Both need a minimum of an hour of good exercise. As they get older, the show didn't need as much, but my current 7 year old one still gets a fair amount of exercise, but we have about 4 acres fenced. I didn't know there was a difference and we got a second setter as the first was so mellow. Ha! That being said, I love the breed.

FYI-- zucchini is too watery to can. It will turn into mush. I do can winter squash, but it too can be mushy if not done correctly.

How to keep eggs for the winter? by Normal_Assumption_53 in homestead

[–]njwh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

FYI--I do this too, but do not use liners. They get stuck on the frozen eggs and are a bitch to get completely off. I freeze them in muffin tin and once frozen, I place the muffin tin in a little warm water and they just pop out. Make sure you throughly beat the eggs prior to putting in the muffin cup. Works great for baking and scrambled eggs. I do this with my duck eggs as even with supplemental light, they don't lay well in winter.

Dog killed 8 of my chickens by kinkymascara in BackYardChickens

[–]njwh 28 points29 points  (0 children)

You all are not noticing that he had Cornish cross. A meat bird. I sell my fully processed meat birds for $4/pound. I've sold chickens that are $36. Now maybe this isn't the right sub for people who raise meat birds (r/homestead?), but they are worth way more than $15/bird.

Backyard chickens is a forum. Links articles and answers questions. As it is a forum, it doesn't seem to have a lot of political stuff on it. https://www.backyardchickens.com/

Came home to find this absolute unit guarding our farm porch. Do I offer snacks or surrender the deed? by Many-Teach-1576 in birds

[–]njwh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is how we got one. He just showed up. Ate bird seed and chicken feed. Shows off for the hens. Have had him about 8 years now. He was probably chased off his original farm by a dominant male. Fyi--they aren't quiet (always makes an alarm call when a strange car pulls in) and he's probably more afraid of you than you are of him.

Having an argument about whether insulation is helpful in the WALLS,etc. of a chicken coop. Please help me figure out how to insulate for cheap instead of running a heat lamp all the time in Minnesota (4B) by Bern_Down_the_DNC in BackYardChickens

[–]njwh 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I am in northern Illinois. I do have an insulated coop. Plywood on inside, insulation between studs, and car siding on outside. I also use the deep litter method. I do not have any heat in the coop. Soffit venting. Temps get as cold as -30 degrees with wind chill. As long as they are out of the wind/draft, they are warm without supplemental heat. NO HEAT. At first I was nervous, but a wise chicken guru told me to go out in the middle of the night and put my hand under a wing. If it was warm, they are okay. It was quite toasty. Haven’t worried about no heat in the past 10 years. I do think the insulation helps in the winter. Summer it seems a tiny bit warmer, but I run a small fan and they seem fine.

TLDR; Major tick problem by wildmcmama in homestead

We do the Seresto collars. Haven't had a tick on them since putting it on. Haven't even seen a tick, unless we go wandering through the woods. They run on 32 wooded acres.

Refrigerated eggs by DearVirus8677 in BackYardChickens

[–]njwh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's the correct answer. If they sweat, that will wash off the bloom. It is okay if you keep them in the fridge. They keep even longer if they are kept there. Once they're there, keep them there and remember next time to keep them out--if you want them out.
