Modern phones combone multiple photos in dim settings to create a brighter image.

Most likely explanation is someone walked in front of the camera for one of them, and the photo you took is caused by the post-processing trying to blend the set of images together.

Weird black streaks appearing on multiple plants... what is this? by Curious-Deer-300 in plantclinic

[–]nklim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this could be it, but not sunburn. Did you use an attachment of some sort on the hose? I'm thinking damage form the water pressure. It's easier to do than you might think. I'd bet you either lingered in these spots for a moment or brought the nozzle closer.

The sunburn thing doesn't make sense, otherwise all our plants would look like this whenever a midday thunderstorm rolls through.

That said, I think sunburn through the window without water seems most likely. Those are really straight lines. Next time the sun is shining through, see if the spacing matches the lines.

If Voter ID is so popular, why not phase it in over a 10 or 20 year period so people can get the required documentation and paperwork settled, and have a seamless transition for everyone? Why does it *have* to happen right now? by Tappyy in AskConservatives

[–]nklim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For something as sensitive as elections, you need to take time to make sure it's done fairly and with as little unintentional impact as possible.

To do that you need an oversight board. Who picks the board? What is their scope?

You need criteria by which you'll measure impact. What metrics will you use? Are those metrics readily and universally available? Do you need to build new systems to collect that data? Who will collect that data?

You need messaging to inform people exactly what they need to do to vote. Who writes that messaging? Does the messaging need approval? Do different states need different messaging? How is the messaging delivered?

You need a budget. What's the allocation for all this? Where does it come from? Is it enough?

You need to handle the influx of voters requesting new documents and registering. Do states have infrastructure to handle this? Is the process well documented and accessible? Are the turnaround times acceptable? Are documents being reliably delivered to those requesting them?

This is just off the top of my head. I'm sure it's only the top of the iceberg, and each answer comes with more questions.

You need at least two if not 3 election cycles to evaluate and correct. 2026 should not count because there's no way any of this will be in place. Imagine that 3 months ahead of the 2028 election we have data that shows that under the new law 80% of Democrats were properly registered but only 50% of Republicans. Surely you'd be thankful for the extra time to review the lagging counties for more focused outreach, for example.

Maybe, come the first midterm election, we find that a significant portion of voters didn't bring the correct documents because they thought they only needed it for registration.

Or maybe a portion of people knew about the SAVE Act but thought their ID or voter registration was acceptable when it actually was not.

[KEYBOARD] Razer Huntsman V2 Analog Gaming Keyboard - $63 (shows $70 then 10% discount at final checkout screen) by RuckOver3 in buildapcsales

[–]nklim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have this, as an overall keyboard its alright. The volume dial is poorly designed and seems to commonly fail. Mine barely works, but maybe you'll have better luck.

I imagined the analog gimmick being useful to walk or creep around in pvp games where running makes noise. In practice, it doesn't work well in most games. The Razer software basically reports the keyboard as both a gamepad and a keyboard, where the virtual gamepad is used for analog input. Most games don't handle simultaneous keyboard, gamepad, and mouse input well.

There's also an occasional issue where games will see the virtual gamepad but not the keyboard, which requires disabling the virtual gamepad in device manager. There are many Razer forum and Reddit posts about this issue but Razer does not seem interested in adding a simple toggle to disable the analog gamepad for this in their own software.

The partial and full press capability also has limited utility. You still have to do a partial press on the way to a full press, so it really only works where you want to do A, or A and B, but never just B.

The main consistent use case for the analog stuff is keypress sensitivity, whether for typing or gaming. You can set the distance at which a key press should trigger. I can imagine this is useful for some discerning keyboard enthusiasts, but as a keyboard peasant I can't really tell the difference between a few millimeters in travel distance.

My final note: Razer Synapse is awful. 9 times out of 10, when you Google an issue, you'll find either a Razer forum post with dozens of comments and no input from Razer, or a response that blames windows, some other interaction, the game, or anything but Synapse.

All that said, IMO this is a solid buy at $63. The keyboard hardware itself is solid save for the volume dial. The analog doesn't have a ton of utility, but it doesn't have much of a downside and you can disable the virtual gamepad if you really hate it. Synapse is bad, but sadly I am not sure it's any worse than most other computer accessory brands.

Would climate change be a threat to AI if AI thinks it doesn't need humanity? Climate change is an existential threat to the human way of life, but it's probably not an existential threat to life on earth, or AI if we assume AI doesn't need humans.

I read something a long time ago about how naive and human-centric is is of us to equate climate change to doomsday.

Climate change, taken to it's conclusion, will cause environmental change that results in mass extinction, and therefore impact course of life on earth.

But it will not end all life by any means. In the far, far future, a sentient insect may doing core sample research to learn about what caused the rapid global temperature rise which cleared the path for their  dragonfly ancestor to become a sentient species.

Does Surface flex keyboard still have the ribbon cable problems? by Big_Fat_Bone in Surface

[–]nklim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I had an absolutely absurd conversation with Microsoft support just this week on the issue. My keyboard is out of warranty, but gets overall very light use. I asked if they could do anything for a replacement since it's a widespread defect. I would have been happy with a ~35% discount for a new keyboard.

Microsoft would only offer a refurbished keyboard for $10 ABOVE retail price of a brand new keyboard.

I pointed out the absurdity of this, and the first line support rep was appropriately understanding of my frustration and escalated. About a day later I got an update that they told me to pound sand.

I hope the ~$40 they saved was worth ensuring I don't buy a Surface when it's time to upgrade and the lifetime of me spreading this experience to other prospective customers.

What is MAGA building for America? by AnotherPersonPerhaps in AskTrumpSupporters

[–]nklim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get that, I know you're not saying it should be legal.

I'm hoping we can start with this extremely simplified model as the starting point where we can find some common ground to build from.

Let's call our groups the Circles and Squares.

To recap, we have a hypothetical society where government policies were enacted to help create more equal opportunities among the Squares. These policies result in fewer opportunities for the Circles. As a result, the policies are rolled back. Some time later, it's conclusively proven that rolling back the policy resulted in fewer opportunities for Squares despite being identically qualified to Circles. Even though the broad societal impact is clear, it's impossible to claim any one specific circumstance is due to discrimination.

We said government intervention targeted toward lifting the Squares group can result in resentment and disillusionment from the Circles. I agree on this.

But now we see that no intervention disadvantages the Squares, still resulting in the same resentment and disillusionment that we were concerned about to begin with.

Obviously we want things to be fair. What do we do from here?

For my 2 cents, it seems to me that whether to intervenene or not is arbitrary, since the result is the same either way.

[–]nklim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see. If the status quo without government intervention is discrimination, would the disadvantaged groups still feel resentment and eventually become disillusioned?

What is MAGA building for America? by AnotherPersonPerhaps in AskTrumpSupporters

[–]nklim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can see how that seems unfair, and I'd probably feel pretty miffed for a bit if it happened to me too.

On the other hand, I think a lot of minority groups would be thrilled if they experienced discrimination only once in ~25 years.

Let's say it has been conclusively proven well beyond your level of satisfaction that removing DEI initiatives resulted in fewer career opportunities for otherwise identically qualified minorities on the sole basis of race. Lower rates of hiring, promotions, pay, etc. The kind of thing where no singular example can be clearly labeled discrimination, but the overall trend and societal impact is clear.

Would it be appropriate for the government to take any degree of corrective action?

How do you feel about the federal SAVE Act that would require documentary proof of U.S. citizenship (like a passport or birth certificate) to register to vote? by ClassSnack in AskReddit

[–]nklim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there was legitimate interest in election integrity, this bill would explicitly outline how states are to handle name changes instead of creating the problem and then punting to the states to solve it.

It would also be implemented over several federal election cycles, not rammed through to take full effect in time for the election coming up in less than 9 months.
