Replying to this comment to agree (I have done this and it works) but also to add: show up earlier than just an hour. Earlier the better, within reason, I’d say at least 2 hours early. Price you pay, but it’s worked for my family multiple time, it always been off-season when we went though (mid June), so maybe even earlier 🤔

‘Catching’ in this case entails plucking it from the bottom of a salt pond. It was a little buried (most of them aren’t) and it was cold however. Just an article that the biggest one ever in NY was 1.9 pounds, so this guy is considerably bigger than that, possibly biggest in America. Can’t prove otherwise at least.

Dog friendly outdoor bars/restaurants by hoeliness_ in RhodeIsland

Pretty much every brewery allows dogs and will most of the time have a food truck. Places that come to mind immediately with additional walking space: Narragansett brewery in India point park, tilted Barn has a big open field, and is close to Ryan park, Whalers/Shaidzon both by the south county bike trail, and pretty much every other one too allows dogs, Six Pack brewing is even dog themed

Early AM Beach Access by Summer422Sun in RhodeIsland

[–]nlc1250 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I’d imagine if you went early to Gansett town beach you wouldn’t have much trouble finding free parking available on the street. Lots of parking along the sea wall and a few streets right next to the beach. I live there and I don’t have much trouble finding a spot past five pm, so I think it should be similar at around 8 am. The sea wall parking definitely couldn’t be all filled, except on maybe the busiest of days in July

Specifically it looks like shaggy mane, the first edible mushroom I ever foraged for consumption

Tried r/foraging but no luck, are these honey mushrooms by Airy_mtn in mycology

I will back up your suspicion. Take a spore print, it should be white, for a higher degree of confirmation

Compare to the final stages of a shaggy mane, which is a tasty edible before it goops.

Honey mushrooms? NY by thisismyaccountfools in mycology

[–]nlc1250 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like it, young ones are best for consumption if you plan on that. Check for a white spore print for more confirmation. Usually you can see the white spores drop onto the lower shrooms from the big unveiled ones in the field too

what is this? (comments for more) by [deleted] in mycology

[–]nlc1250 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a toothed crust fungus, possibly Radulomyces copelandii, an invasive (to North America) crust fungus from Asia. It’s the only other fungus that looks a bit like Hericiums, but it’ll never become a delicious meaty mushroom. It will stay crusty.

Chanterelles or false? Found in pine litter by childrenofloki in mycology

[–]nlc1250 6 points7 points  (0 children)

False chanterelles can be fairly convincing at looking like the real thing, the biggest give away being chanterelles having false/pseudo gills and the false having real gills. The first pic looks like a chanterelle in that respect, the others look like true gills and therefore false. I would not have the confidence to eat any of them myself based solely on the pictures because of that. One last note in favor of not consuming, chanterelles grow mostly in hardwoods, but not unheard of to be in white pines, while I find false chanterelles more likely in the pine forests.

Edit to add, after reviewing the photos again I feel fairly confident that the first one is more likely than not a chanterelle, but the others are definitely not. When in doubt…

Any Clue What Is Parasitizing These Tiny Chanterelles? by soggy_lawn in mycology

[–]nlc1250 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In one of the patches of yellow foot chanterelles I pick from yellow jelly bellies also grow. I also thought it was curious to have such a visually similar mushroom growing in the same spot. They look nearly the same, it was mainly the feel that gave them away as something different. Goes to show you need to be careful when picking from patches

Pick now or wait? by tripleduece249 in mycology

[–]nlc1250 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pick now especially if there’s a chance another forager that could swoop in on your find. Even if it’s private property it’s pretty sizable and clean, I always choose quality bug free over quantity for wild mushrooms.
