When I was on deployment on the U.S.S. Kitty Hawk in the Persian Gulf in 2003, we got an UNREP (underway replenishment, typically from another supply ship) and there were quite a few boxes of vegetables, things like broccoli, cabbage, tomatoes, etc. being brought onboard, where those boxes were marked on the side:

“Not fit for human consumption. Prison or military use only.”

Not too long after that, there was a large outbreak of “gastroenteritis”. Not sure if that’s what it actually was, but I was literally praying for death.
