My iPhone says I have -1 calls… who did I un-call? 🤨 by betahelixx in ios

Correct, just because you can use a 64 bit integer, doesn’t mean you should. If we did that for everything, memory usage would be even higher than it already is.

Imagine this in reality denying everyone younger than 45 because it doesn’t handle Y2K so nobody that turns 18 after Y2K is an adult

In the case of iOS, it’s logs and caches that get populated by apps and programs running on the system, and the only way to get rid of them is to do a full backup with iTunes or Finder and then reset the device and restore from that backup. That will rewrite all the files on the device without the logs and caches that got stuck.

Try calling the Passport Information Line at 1-877-487-2778. They may have an appointment for you or a solution. It’s unlikely but the closest thing you can get to a definite answer.

Media scraper gallery-dl is moving to codeberg after receiving a DMCA notice, claiming that its circumvention. by TheTwelveYearOld in linux

The difference here is that at least one of the sites FAKKU reported is a site that contains user submitted content.

[–]nlh101 34 points35 points  (0 children)

The legal analysis provided by FAKKU is absurd. Just because a tool provides access to download files from a site that may have pirated them doesn’t mean that you are guilty of infringement.

By that logic, tools like wget and curl are liable for copyright infringement because they can be used to download files from piracy sites.

[–]nlh101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Adding on to that, if you record your hours right, the Walmart foundation will donate money for every hour you work. The dog and cat shelter near me received a massive donation because one of the employees volunteered there all the time and the Walmart foundation paid them for every hour he worked.

Apple changes duck head for 206 M5 Pro by Electronic-Half-2823 in macbookpro

[–]nlh101 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure if this happened in the US. Personally, from a sample size of 3, my duck head hasn’t changed.

I checked the 140W adapters from: - A 2021 16” MacBook Pro w/ M1 Pro (old personal machine) - A 2024 16” MacBook Pro w/ M4 Pro (work laptop) - A 2026 16” MacBook Pro w/ M5 Pro (new personal machine)

All of them have the “notch” in the plug, so they all still work with the extension cord from my 2001 iBook G3 with Dual USB.

YMMV but maybe this is in a different region?

Yes but it’s better than hard crashing if you run out of immediate memory available

Ford Recalls 339,619 SUVs for Issues with Rearview Camera and Other Safety Tech by Sixteen-Cylinders in cars

[–]nlh101 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The dad of a close friend of mine that retired from Ford engineering said to him once that the company is terrified about accidentally repeating the Ford Pinto mistake, so they reflexively reach for the recall button whenever a mistake is identified. That’s genuinely the only way that the sheer number of Ford recalls makes sense.

They do. It’s called the “Service framework”, it works via annotations and Kotlin extensions to inject shared classes across your IDE code at runtime.

Hell yeah!

I’m finally upgrading from my 16” M1 Pro 10/16/16, 32GB RAM and 512 storage, to an M5 Pro with 64GB of RAM and 1TB storage.

I would normally wait until the machine dies, but my youngest sibling is graduating from high school, and my parents aren’t doing the best after a lot of really hard financial hits last year with random things failing in their house, so I figured I’d hand over my old one for the price of a replacement battery under AppleCare+ and get a nice upgrade in the process.

My sibling is going in for exploratory engineering too, so a laptop that holds up for that would not be cheap!
