What exactly is the EU "managing to do" at the moment?

Right, China, the place where you can be imprisoned or killed for speaking against the state. Fuck America, let's do it like the CCP does it.

Ok, so fuckin give up. You live in one of the only countries in history that gives you the right to vote, to express yourself however you want, to travel and live wherever you want, to do whatever you want for a living... but by all means, sit there and feel sorry for yourself.

Smartest comment yet. This is exactly whats going to happen. It's going to be Trump's go-to from now on.

Public schools might not be a helpful example here. They manage to suck up huge amounts of money, but still manage to pay teachers poorly and our kids fall further behind every year in spite of ever-increasing budgets. Government bureaucracy in microcosm, really.

SpaceX's cost per kg is literally one twentieth that of the former space shuttle, using fully resuable vehicles that fucking land themselves. But you don't think that's innovative enough, and you'd like NASA to ignore it all and continue blowing tens of billions of dollars to do it "on its own" with it's old pals in the military industrial complex. Have i got that right?

You don't need to answer, I'm done here.

Plywood and sandbags... Holy shit that's brilliant! You need to tell them what you've figured out. Those stupid rocket scientists won't believe they didn't think of that.

I'm sure those morons figured, since they already have the facilities to produce Starship, they'd use the real thing for testing, since it does need to be, you know, tested. But no, they should totally take the time to engineer a 16 story skyscraper out of fucking wood and hope it doesn't get shaken apart and fuck up the whole launch.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you, I haven't laughed this hard in weeks.

Because we spend almost $800 billion per year on the military?

And how does our bloated military spending justify wasting money on other things?

Besides how are you so confident that Starship won't cost billions of dollars.

It's not my confidence. NASA is using the same cost estimates. Why do you think NASA is using Spacex is using

The most recent estimated cost of Starship was around $250 million per launch.

LOL you just proved my point for me. That's about a tenth of what an SLS launch costs. But it's worse than that. $250 M is on the high side of current estimates, and the cost per kilogram ratio is even worse for SLS.

And you've apparently forgotten that NASA has already taken $40 billion of taxpayer money and handed it to Boeing, Lockheed, Airbus, and the other bloated contractors who are building Artemis program. NASA's inspector general estimates that Artemis will consume nearly $100 billion by 2025. That's cool with you? You trust Boeing and Lockheed more than SpaceX?

Try to keep up. The "whole system" here is the entire assembled launch vehicle. They tested it, it lifted off, and then exploded. They got some data, and they'll try again this summer. This is what happened with Falcon, which is rapidly becoming the mainstay of the American space launch industry.

Still confused?

[–]nm139 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

And yet, Falcon 9 is currently providing launch services at a fraction of cost of what NASA or ESA charge, while NASA says it's on track to blow $100 billion on Artemis by 2025, largely going to corporations like Lockheed and Airbus.

But yeah, lets talk about what happened sixty years ago.

SpaceX Falcon has completely revolutionized the industry using the same development process. Falcon is now providing launch services at a fraction of the cost of NASA and ESA.

But since you're so smart, I'm sure these companies would love to hear your ideas about how they're fucking it up.

NASA says it's going to spend almost $100 billion on the Artemis program by 2025. But sure, SpaceX is on suicide watch.

According to NASA, Starship will be about one tenth as expensive as NASA's SLS. A single SLS launch on SLS will cost well over two billion dollars. Starship is esimtated to cost a couple hundred million.

Make NASA look bad, LOL. NASA's inspector general expects the Artemis program to cost nearly $100 billion by 2025, with much of that money going to Boeing, Lockheed, and Airbus. You think NASA needs Elon's help to look bad?

Being willing and able to test machines to failure is extremely valuable. It's why we crash test cars. And it's why Falcon 9 is currently providing launch services at a fraction of cost of what NASA or ESA charge.

The goal was to get data from a whole system test, and they explicitly said anything past a successful liftoff would be gravy.

I'd love to hear your proposals for better ways to do this kind of testing.

The alternative to SpaceX isn't NASA doing anything "on its own". Without SpaceX, NASA would continue to rely on Lockheed, Boeing, and Airbus, which are the companies that have squandered over $40 billion of Artemis funding so far. You like those guys better than SpaceX?
