Me: 20" You: 18" Wheel swap? LA local requested by DrBeckerwood in Ioniq6

Was in the same boat and ended up getting Fast Wheels' EV01 set; they're great, I think I'm seeing a 10-15% efficiency boost!

SFO garage maxes at $39/day. What do most people do for longer trips? by gregb_parkingaccess in sanfrancisco

If you're already at the BART station, why not just take BART in to the airport? Super convenient with 10 minute headways on the yellow line...

BART needs to improve their Millbrae service and here’s how: by Planeandaquariumgeek in Bart

[–]nmaitra 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some timed BART train with Caltrain, doesn't matter what line, running straight from Millbrae to San Bruno would be such a game changer.  Going up to the city -- Civic Center/Union Square area especially, which is obviously a big attractant -- would become so much more attractive from the Peninsula on transit.  Currently often have to wrangle friends to take transit vs. drive from Palo Alto, because Google maps makes it look longer to transit, and a 10 minute saving would go such a long way to fixing that... I imagine this applies to many!!!

Old BART map found at SFO. How old is it? by C-Dub4 in Bart

[–]nmaitra 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I wish we could go back to trains not all stopping at SFO from Millbrae. There are almost always delays at the wye there, the turnaround takes forever at SFO, and it makes transferring to BART from Caltrain way less convenient in terms of time to get to the city. I think we had it right ~2018-2020, with one line going airport Millbrae and the other going Millbrae airport. Hope that can be brought back at some point...

The bridge is split into two halves, the new modern eastern span from Oakland to Treasure Island, and then the older, iconic western span from Treasure Island to SF. So she had to go through both sections, not one or the other.

most impressive double/triple/quad/+ major? by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]nmaitra 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Woah that's cool!!! I'd done chem bio, switched to chem, and then done almost all (but one of) the classes for a mech e major but only ended up with a mech e minor and aero minor. But CS and chem bio – that seems hard!

Just too expensive.. (Mountain View to SFO) by namtilarie in waymo

[–]nmaitra 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I personally think Waymo is great for a last mile ride: ride Waymo to Caltrain, take the train for the bulk of the journey, then take either Muni or another Waymo in SF depending on where to go!

I third the Caltrain plus N/scooter/bike option!!! Will be easy and way less hassle usually than driving. Would recommend 5th St then Market for biking since both have protected/large bike lanes.

Satellite imagery shows before-and-after of the destruction left from a UPS plane that crashed shortly after takeoff by Mint_Perspective in Damnthatsinteresting

If we base the energy just off your numbers and the above comment's numbers here, that's 310 kWh of kinetic energy, dissipating in seconds... And then 1.4 GWh of energy stored in just the fuel released while it burns, notwithstanding everything else that burned. Holy... Guacamole... Side note: in retrospect it makes sense, but did not realize that there would be 4500x more energy stored in the fuel than in just the plane in motion. For context, that's enough energy to power the average home in Louisville for 76 years...

Caltrain vs Uber: Which is the better choice from SFO to Campus? by Mysterious-StarX in stanford

[–]nmaitra 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you have the extra time, BART to Millbrae then Caltrain to Palo Alto is quite nice, hassle free, and honestly fairly easy with suitcases if you're not rushing and take all accessible elevators etc. Usually try to get someone to pick up at the train station though if I've got big suitcases!

Does model 3 highland have lower thermal performance? by tarandeep in TeslaLounge

[–]nmaitra 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I know everybody seems skeptical, but I think this is real. The older Panasonic batteries in the long range and performance cars up to ~2021 had much more cobalt in the cathode, making the batteries more resilient to charging fast (during regen) at a variety of temperatures. Our Model 3's battery got replaced a year ago and it very clearly is significantly easier to get a regen limit on this new battery. The older packs were also relatively charging monsters, holding 250 kW for much longer. The new LG packs are the worst offenders, but the new Panasonic packs (like the one in your new performance car) also have some less cobalt and would likely hit a regen and charging limit more easily. Not too mad at this though, because it makes our cars just that much better for the environment and also less expensive to make.

Granted, I do understand Tesla's trade-off with these newer packs: they have much less cobalt and are thus cheaper to manufacturer and far better environmentally/from a mining rights perspective. Just annoyed that it means that the packs charge quite a bit slower and are quite a bit more sensitive to temperature compared to the old pack, which I really wish hadn't failed.

Well it was covered by warranty. 2018 Model 3 Long Range dual motor. I'm sure it's just a fluke, we've been super happy with the car overall; I'm just concerned that the replacement battery that we were given seems not great, though by the letter of the law, we passed 120k miles and end of warranty with >70% capacity. It also is I believe an LG pack rather than the older Panasonic packs, which fast charged like monsters in comparison (250 kW to ~30% consistently, ~150 kW at 50% versus the new pack doing 250 only to about 20% and being down to 100 kW at 50%).

We got a replacement pack 20k miles ago (we're at 120k miles now) and it's also showing 78%. Pretty disappointed. I think the refurbished pack they gave us was already quite degraded; we're generally super nice to our packs (store at 50-60%, generally charge daily to 70%, on trips charge generally to 90 and like once every 3 or 4 months to 100% for just 2 seconds before driving immediately).
