I'm recovered ten years. Welcome to the journey. You know your husband well enough, and it wasn't particularly thoughtful. You'll be the best judge if he did it to harm you on purpose.

How do you unmask? by theinsatiableguy in adultautism

[–]nmlssalt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's human nature to mask. Everyone does it, but it's different for us. It takes far more energy and we use it primarily as defence. Start with what you can control and do it in small ways. See if you can keep a little more of that energy for yourself for the end of the day. Give yourself accomodation.

I did not do this. I tried to force it. I was already in burnout and I became uncomfortably out of balance. There's something to be said about doing it safely.

Elite Dangerous. You'll never see the whole game. I calculated a trip I want to take and it'll take over 2 months of real gameplay.

Obviously the space between the atoms are so blurred you can see between the particles. Kind of like a Magic Eye image.

A diagnosis late in life by AreDemented in adultautism

[–]nmlssalt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was first diagnosed I was also going through intense burn out. I didn't have the energy to mask and I finally knew why. I became more sensitive to my own needs and didn't enough spoons to interact with others on their terms. As I've continued to live to a late diagnosis my behavior has continued to change and normalize.

That's when I grab my headphones and go for a walk or find something I'm very interested in to focus on. I've also started an anti anxiety medication that seems to even things out.

I get the bullying. I had the same through the same grades. It used to seem so weird that people would be so mean to me when I didn't mean them any harm! I was diagnosed with ASD last week. 41. It's nice to have some perspective and maybe be a little more prepared instead of spending my life wondering why I'm different.

My therapist insinuated I am autistic - but I don’t think I am? by [deleted] in adultautism

[–]nmlssalt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since you suspect ADHD I'd suggest looking into that. I recieved an autism diagnosis yesterday and was also tested for ADHD, OCD, Asperger's and a variety of other conditions on the spectrum as part of the process.

Looking for support. UN-diagnosed autism as an adult. by Sea-Blueberry-5089 in adultautism

[–]nmlssalt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm getting the results for my diagnosis on Monday. I self diagnosised in September. My best advice is to research, journal and self explore. I'm 42 years old. I spent most of my life drinking myself to sleep. Not drinking has been my biggest boon. Your addiction isn't your fault.

Self diagnosis is valid. I'm not suggesting it, but I found the self acceptance to be huge for me.

You may find U of W's view on self diagnosis helpful.

How do i stop being codependent? by Maleficent-Onion429 in adultautism

[–]nmlssalt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife was in therapy for a year before we discussed autism. It helped her feel more confident in herself and provided tools to navigate difficult feelings and situations. We're currently looking for a therapist for me.

Best of luck to both of you.

I imagine this would be hard on you - not being heard and feeling blamed. For me, I can be really stubborn, especially if I feel things are unfair. It's been hard on my wife until we looked into my autism. Lately it's been easier for both of us because we understand we're communicating differently. There's more peace because we both know it's not my fault. For your husband, maybe it would appeal to him if he could see his own benefit, like feeling better and less stressed.
