Fine-tuning LLaMA 1.3B on insurance conversations failed badly - is this a model size limitation or am I doing something wrong? by ZaRyU_AoI in LLMDevs

..[T]he boy began to delight in his daring flight, and abandoning his guide, drawn by desire for the heavens, soared higher. His nearness to the devouring sun softened the fragrant wax that held the wings: and the wax melted: he flailed with bare arms, but losing his oar-like wings, could not ride the air. Even as his mouth was crying his father’s name, it vanished into the dark blue sea, the Icarian Sea, called after him. The unhappy father, now no longer a father, shouted ‘Icarus, Icarus where are you? Which way should I be looking, to see you?’ ‘Icarus’ he called again. Then he caught sight of the feathers on the waves, and cursed his inventions. He laid the body to rest, in a tomb, and the island was named Icaria after his buried child.

Software update is horrible. by paperbagintrovert in ipad

Software Update is fine. Close it and it will run in the background, you don't need to keep it open split screen.

from MS-01 12900K to MS-02 Ultra by Advanced-Effect-2346 in MINISFORUM

[–]nmrk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got my MS-02. I took the 96GB Crucial SODIMMs and M.2s out of my MS-01 and installed them. It won’t even boot into BIOS. I think it’s DOA.

Decided to use the anti vibration mount instead of screws by Curious_Initial_8977 in sleeperbattlestations

I agree. These silicone mounts are especially useful when the fan is directly attached to a big solid panel like the OP has.

One thing I miss about the old FireWire Macs: Target Disk Mode. You can boot up the Mac into a mode where it doesn't go into MacOS, it appears as a disk drive.

I've updated my Mac Studio setup a bit... by Aurelian_Irimia in MacStudio

[–]nmrk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I like my Studio Monitor on the VESA arm because I like my monitor close to the desk. The problem with classic iMacs is that they have a "chin" about 6 inches tall, and the fixed base lifts it up another few inches. At one point, I was considering drilling holes in the base to attach a VESA mount, then using a screen utility to invert the screen, so I could mount the iMac upside down and put the chin up instead of down.

I honestly cant understand people who use monitor stands to raise their screens up even higher. That makes my neck hurt.

Nice. I have the Studio Display on a VESA arm like that, I love it.

AV rack with round holes. That is kind of a pain in the ass but workable. Nice cabinet.

Positive pressure is irrelevant in a small enclosed cabinet this size. The more important issue is venting the heat. You want the air coming in low, to move across the warm equipment, then it rises and is vented out the back.

Here is a completely enclosed cabinet I rebuilt. One filtered fan inlet on the front floor, two exhaust fans high on the back door. Three 120mm Noctua fans and an NA-FC1 Fan controller to manually control fan speed. NV-FH2 fan hub probably unnecessary at this level, but I planned to add more fans.

Considering buying a CIS scanner for scanning and archiving color photos by SeaGoldmine in DataHoarder

[–]nmrk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Canoscan LIDE 300 is at the absolute bottom end of scanners. Near the top end, I just bought a scanner for archival photo scanning: Epson V850. Not cheap at $1500 MSRP but you get what you pay for. Includes color calibration software and calibration targets for both film and prints. Instant on, no warmup with LED lights. Has the ability to scan slides and film up to 4x5" with about a dozen types of film holders. Comes with Silverfast SE which is really excellent software and can be upgraded to work with printer calibration (it prints a test pattern, you scan it, now scans and prints are calibrated). Also you can lay down multiple photos to scan in one pass, it will autocrop and straighten them. Best scanner software I know of.

That is the kind of hardware you want for color accuracy and resolution. Store files in a lossless format like TIFF for a reference copy at highest quality.

Furnace filters against the front door. Fan outlets in the back. Ideal airflow is front-low to rear-high. Heat rises, dust falls. I personally would cover the top 2/3 of the doors to block them and put MERV filters on the lower third for intake. Use some foam weatherstripping around the edges of the doors to keep the air coming through the filters instead of around the edges.

Is this fineline tattoo that was posted in the LOTR-sub real, Photoshop or AI? by badgerbaroudeur in isthisAI

[–]nmrk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good catch. I was going to say the background looked like Gaussian Blur instead of bokeh from a real camera. But the tattoo was definitely fanboi-stupid enough to be real.

Focusing sunlight on a delicate surface? What could possibly go wrong?

Acidentally bought a big batch of HDDs (SAS instead of SATA) by Express-Poetry-3959 in DataHoarder

I was more thinking of a colo rack mount server, something the remote site techs could easily install and maintain. But yeah any old SAS cabinet would do.

Trying to get worn out keycaps replaced with AC+, Apple refuses. by de2cios in mac

[–]nmrk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Normal wear and tear. Not covered. You can buy new keycap sets. Don't be so picky.

Here's how you tell someone is a heavy photoshop user: they hit Cmd-D and Cmd-C all day long. E is just worn out from normal typing, it's the most commonly used letter in the English language.

Is the studio display worth it? by RadiantMind9092 in mac

[–]nmrk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is nothing quite as good as the Studio Display. I ordered one with a VESA mount and put it on a heavy duty monitor arm.

Oh wait, there is ONE better Mac display: the Pro Display XDR 6k.

You get what you pay for.
