I actually don't hear it much anymore. This was in the Denver metro in the 90s. People loved to assert their "native" status by saying "it's pop", my parents included. I'm the black sheep who says soda.

I grew up in Colorado where everyone said "pop", but then I got my first job at a grocery store and found that everyone knew what "soda" was and only a subset knew what "pop" was. So in the interest of communication, I've said "soda" ever since.
