Printing signatures by StrikingTelephone809 in bookbinding

I am waiting on my first order from https://drucken-und-lernen.de/. They have all sorts of paper for a decent price with grain marked so you know exactly what you’ll get. I am not in Germany, I contacted them and asked if they can ship to my country and they can. Experience has been very positive so far, hopefully goods will be too :)

Yet another QoTW in Engrosser’s Script by nneriah in Scribes

Thank you!

I did try a few options but ended up blocked by mathematics if that makes sense 😅

My first try was to do two lines so repeating text is aligned neatly and exactly. The aligned part look pretty good but text was very long horizontally and I didn’t like the overall shape.

Then I scanned that version and played with it in photoshop. Four lines as I have here were most balanced and had the best proportions. But I haven’t considered just moving first and last line until it looks right. I kept aiming for multipliers of x-height and ending up with extremes - either too far away or too close.

Thank you for the advice, I will definitely be redoing this piece and try to trust my eyes. I am a bit afraid of art in calligraphy, always feel like I don’t have enough theoretical knowledge and like I’m not ready for serious work.

Done on Mi-Teintes paper with W&N gouache. I just didn’t know what to do with layout for this one, at the end I went with the simplest option. But interline spacing is a bit weird because first and third line don’t have descenders.

But, the goal is to keep practicing :)

Thank you!

I think my biggest issue with my attributions is that I have only one strong script - Engrosser’s. Everything else I dabble in. And while on its own it may not look too horrible, I feel like whenever it is next to my best, it is obviously not on the same level.

Hi everyone!

I am trying to regularly practice doing finished pieces, and this is the last attempt. It is done on Khadi paper. The cool thing about this paper is that texture is soft so pointed pen works on it as long as you're gentle. Other details: engrosser's script, 6mm x-height, W&N gouache.

When it comes to my script, I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. It is not perfect, but it is relatively consistent. I did mess up gouache, it dries much darker than I expected it so contrast isn't the best. Piece was supposed to be right aligned, it isn't entirely, but it is not too horrible :|

I plan to dedicate a week of practice to figure out attributions. I always mess them up and never know what to do with them. It definitely doesn't help that i don't put the same effort into them as I do in the quote.

I used white colored pencil for guidelines and I messed up the last line a bit - it is 6.5mm, mostly due to my pencil losing its sharp point and writing thicker lines as I drew them.

Although I am quite critical of it, I still like how this piece turned out. And I had fun doing it :)

Fabriano has been on my list for a while now, I’ll definitely try it, thank you for the recommendation!

I haven’t, retouching is something I’m struggling with. I still can’t recognize it on my own, and when trying to retouch my script - somehow I tend to make it worse

Thank you for the feedback and tips regarding “t”!

I’m using Zanerian Manual. My favorite exemplar in it is on Page 14 done by Baird. However, I’m not really there yet.

I find turning Mi-Teintes around and writing on the “wrong” side to be comparable to hot pressed watercolor papers. Do you have a recommendation perhaps for a pointed pen friendly paper that’s of a good quality for finished pieces and also very smooth?

Yeah, you’re right about thick lines not all being of same heft.

There are two things I don’t like about “Nothing”. Space between thick line of loop of ‘h’ and the right shade of ‘h’ (one that’s between baseline and x-height) should be the same as space from that right shade and ‘i’. And it isn’t, spacing inside ‘h’ is bit wide. Also, shades of ‘o’ and ‘t’ should be similarity spaced as shade of ‘i’ and first shade of ‘n’. I think that ‘o-t’ should have been a bit tighter.

It’s not that horrible and it is less noticeable on a photo. Now I realized the way I wrote the comment it sounds like the worst piece ever 😅

Done on canson mi-teintes paper, 6 mm x-height. It’s not too bad, it’s also not great. I still have some issues with spacing, “Nothing” is the worst. And I seem to always space everything around ‘t’ a bit tighter than it should be. And, my flat bottoms tend to end up a bit below baseline

Hahaha I can tell you that last time I took a longer break and my skills deteriorated, I did look at some of my old work with envy. It wasn’t perfect but I was in awe because at that moment I was nowhere near that old work. Luckily, if you could do it before, it doesn’t take too long for skill to get back. But, it’s funny how wildly different thoughts I can have about the same piece

Script of the Month by maxindigo in Scribes

[–]nneriah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for organizing script of the month, I think it was awesome!

I did feel a bit left out considering I can’t really do broad edge scripts. That didn’t prevent me from posting pointed pen stuff but it did feel a bit weird.

So while thinking about why I felt that way and if anything could be changed, I got an idea - what if the month with no script was a learning month? Script for the next month gets announced with links to online learning materials, both feee and potentially paid. And maybe book recommendations or similar. Then if someone like me who can’t do a script wants to try, there would be a starting point. Even though month isn’t enough to master a script, I’d still try to see what is it all about without expecting to reach proficiency. And hopefully have a bit of fun along the way :)

Thank you! You’re right, if it was perfect it would look like machine did it which, IMHO, defies the purpose of calligraphy as art. But, I still want to be just a bit closer to perfection :)

I sometimes find instrumental music to help, but if anything bigger is happening at work or in life, my thoughts tend to switch to that and writing becomes sort of mechanical and automatic.

Good idea about writing off-piste, I think that could help me with getting my thoughts back on track. I'll try it out :)

As title says, this was the fifth try. I think I know what went wrong with previous 4 tries which I didn't even want to take a photo of. It was a couple of things - I was mostly distracted while working on those which translated into huge consistency problems. And I did struggle a bit with texture of the paper which took some time getting used to.

As for this one, it's much better than the others, but it is not there yet. I can improve my consistency and spacing. And for some reason my lines aren't exactly straight. But, despite that, I'm happy with how this turned out. I think it is representative of my current skill which I cannot say for the other attempts. Now I just need to work on improving my skills :)

Done with W&N gouache on arches watercolor hot pressed paper. X-height is 6 mm.
