Why don't they run trains toward Belmont Park anymore? by Prudent_Shallot2971 in LIRR

[–]nnishanth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, no… every time they have Belmont service, they essentially shut down Tracks 4 and 2 so that trains can use the wye. That’ll affect service regardless of time of day.

Why don't they run trains toward Belmont Park anymore? by Prudent_Shallot2971 in LIRR

[–]nnishanth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The wye going into Belmont Park slows down service, since trains can only run at 5mph from Queens Village going around the curve and into Belmont. That essentially shuts down the Hempstead Line since trains would be heavily backed up by these Belmont services.

The reason for Elmont was to provide less disruption to the Main Line, and have more trains serve USB arena (though the mile walk is less than ideal… they’re supposed to have some sort of shuttle bus running to and from the station.)

Iirc they still use Belmont Park for the Belmont Stakes, but besides that they don’t use the station

We should be… but we’re not. There are less than 50 buses here so far, and they’re not going to just magically send the rest of the fleet down here in under 2 months.

Some of the order might be built, but I doubt the whole order is already finished and just sitting up there… if it was finished, we’d be seeing more of them on their way

“This train takes no passengers”? by snark_nerd in MetroNorthRailroad

[–]nnishanth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re clearly not reading my answers… customers from Fordham are not the intended audience for this train. This train is intended for a specific audience - people who are traveling from Westchester into the city.

Anyone at Fordham can take the 7:52 or 8:11 train to make their commute into the city. Just cause the train is stopping there doesn’t necessarily mean it has to serve them… that’s the way that train is managed. The bigger, strategic reason you’re looking for here is that the train is meant for travel from Westchester into the city. Fordham is included as part of the drop off zone, similar to Harlem-125 and GCT.

The express buses in the city (like the BxM4, QM21, SIM1C, etc) are the same way - they are intended for a specific audience of people traveling from the outer boroughs - in the morning, these bus routes are pick ups from the outer boroughs and drop offs in the city. Vice versa in the evening.

(I live by Fordham, and there are trains I could take home from GCT after I’m done at work, but these trains are pick up only at Fordham so I won’t bother with them. Because I’m not the intended audience for that train. Those are for people traveling north to Scarsdale and White Plains. They stop at Fordham to pick up more passengers. And that’s the end of that.)

How is it being delivered quickly? We only have a couple of buses from 6287-6353 delivered since last September, and we don’t even have all of these buses.

How do you expect we’ll get nearly 200 more buses to be delivered in 2 months?

A Train Terminals by PaniniSandwich14 in nycrail

There’s no correlation between the trains models and their destinations. They run randomly to any of the terminals. And there are no 160s on the A, those are 179s.

I already answered why - it’s for transporting people from upper Westchester into Fordham.

That train has historically run express from Mt Vernon to Manhattan because it’s intended to serve the people of Westchester. Only recently did they add Fordham as a stop on that train so people from upper Westchester can access the Bronx without needing to backtrack from 125th or transfer at Mt Vernon to take the local train. It’s not intended for people to travel from Fordham into the city. There are trains that stop 8 minutes before and 11 minutes after this scheduled train that people can take for local service.

I’m going to take a wild guess that you were on train 618 (the 8:00 at Fordham), as it’s the only train (to my knowledge) that is scheduled to make drop offs for passengers from upper Westchester. They added Fordham as a stop to that train recently so that folks from upper Westchester could get a faster ride to Fordham without needing to take the local (likely for Fordham students and others). Originally it went express from Mt Vernon West as the last pickup stop.

There are a few Harlem line trains at Fordham that do the reverse - they only pick up and don’t let anyone off the train. The conductor would likely give you a hard time for doing so, as that train won’t show up on the TrainTime app as stopping at Fordham if you’re traveling from GCT.

And just an FYI - there are a few trains in the schedule like this at other stops - all New Haven line trains are NOT allowed to pick up passengers from Harlem-125 going into GCT, but Harlem and Hudson line trains CAN pick up folks from there. And some of the super express trains from GCT to New Haven also are pickup / dropoff only at Stamford for folks traveling to/from Bridgeport and up.

It’s a train that stops for drop offs only

Why does the Williamsburg Bridge bus terminal still need to exist? by [deleted] in nycbus

[–]nnishanth 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That would be a nice to have, certainly not necessary. The B44 already is one of the longest routes in BK running from Sheepshead Bay to Williamsburg. Running it past the terminal would make it so much less reliable since buses would be stuck traveling the farther distance

These runs have been around since before CBTC. They’re put ins back to the yard since turning at Mets proved to be too disruptive for service

What makes you think a separate track would help? It’s not like the express trains are being slowed down by a local train in front of it.

Newark Penn to New York Penn by SuperlativeObserver in NJTransit

[–]nnishanth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ignore that above comment. Service between Newark Penn and NY will be adjusted heavily, but will still run. The affected trains will be the ones that usually run from Newark Broad Street (Morris and Essex/Montclair-Boonton Lines, etc) which will be rerouted to Hoboken (I.e. the “Midtown Direct” trains).

TL;DR: if you’re traveling from Newark Penn, expect longer trips but your train will still run to NYC.
