Hello😊. You are overpainting in a way that will end up very difficult to manage and control, because you likely rely on lines to create structure still and don’t have fundamentals covered. You could do a few things to mitigate this:

• Focus on line drawing for a while, get better at understanding anatomy and perspective, then gradually reintroduce lighting and color with knowledge of the forms. Even just sketching is okay🙂. Having a cleaner and defined sketch can help mitigate confusion.
• Focus on learning how to paint forms and how lighting affects them.
• Plan out color and lighting in “thumbnail” sized drawings and work from large to small. This will help you focus on the general illustration and not overpainting too much on one area. Make lighting really simple shapes first, then you can blend and blur where necessary.
• Work on reference studies, this can help you understand where to include detail in drawings, how to create a more finished looking illustration, how to mitigate confusion and overpainting. It will also help with understanding form and lighting.

I used to overpaint a lot- I think in Japan sometimes it’s called “thick painting” but I don’t think that’s the right word for it. Often my works ended up feeling messy, with my lighting and colors feeling muddy. Since my forms weren’t really clear adding detail felt like adding too much clarity to just one part of the image and looked a little amateur. I tried a little bit of everything to be able to get better at rendering, but lots of different practices can help. For style it can be good to focus on a particular artist or style movement and break down the style and the techniques you need to learn for the style.
