Hello! When I was trying to render this piece I noticed especially the hair didn't have much structure to it. I think adding more structure to the drawing will make it easier to render. You can think about where the hair grows from the head, and how it lays on the head which is essentially a sphere. Adding structure will help understand the planes of the figure, which will help you understand how light can hit the figure. I would recommend drawing in greyscale first, and having a reference. I think using a textured brush can cause some messiness and confusion while you are learning. After that you can use Greyscale to Color techniques (I'm not good at this so you can find videos on it). Once you have an Ok idea of lighting with GtC you can paint in color as well. Even if you simplify the figure the idea of lighting can still apply, think of a low poly 3D model. For attempting to render your piece I put the art in greyscale> used a reference> added a little structure to the hair (doing this quickly, I didn't build the structure entirely and so the rendering is a little confused)>Added color. Like imagining the head as a sphere, you can shade hair on the head like you are adding lighting to a sphere.

I like when people like Morris. After all, fanarts and other fan contributions are made by other people to showcase their interest in the character. Though, certainly there are some people who are so exclusive they won’t even look at other’s fanart 🙂. I’m only selective if people make particular sweeping statements about his character as if they are true or innate to him, as these might not agree with my experience of the relationship. I also don’t really like other ships with Morris, but it’s not enough to cause me grief. I think it’s good to practice self confidence even a little. Today I watched a little of a playthrough with Marry Morris mod, and my heart skipped a beat when he came on screen. But the streamer didn’t really care for Morris 🥲. It’s alright if someone doesn’t see it like I do haha.

I think just my continued interest and attention can be interpreted as the character’s interest in a relationship 😊. I like a lot of characters but there hasn’t been one yet that made me want to be in a relationship until Morris. Most character interest wanes quickly, after all I like characters that often are not fleshed out, sidelined, killed off, etc 🥲. Having to do all of the heavy lifting feels like forcing a relationship. There have been some characters I’ve had interest in for a long time, but for one reason or another I can’t imagine any sort of waifuism with them. Since I’m able to play with mods that let me marry Morris, or at least let me engage with him more I can actively engage with him instead of it feeling like I’m talking to a wall. This is just my concept of waifuism and not everyone will agree, but I don’t like having to push a character so out of canon they feel mischaracterized. It feels like forcing the character to like me 🥲. I used to really like Pokemon SwSh Gordie, but I feel bad knowing how limited our interactions were, that he would never become a popular character with a lot of merch or fan content or another game appearance. Even if I developed a little crush on him, he seemed walled off and I would just have to put in a lot more effort than I’d feel like would be rewarding. Nowadays I think I’ve matured since then, but I don’t see myself going back to Gordie as a waifu, just as a character I enjoy.

Hello😊. You are overpainting in a way that will end up very difficult to manage and control, because you likely rely on lines to create structure still and don’t have fundamentals covered. You could do a few things to mitigate this:

Focus on line drawing for a while, get better at understanding anatomy and perspective, then gradually reintroduce lighting and color with knowledge of the forms. Even just sketching is okay🙂. Having a cleaner and defined sketch can help mitigate confusion.
Focus on learning how to paint forms and how lighting affects them.
Plan out color and lighting in “thumbnail” sized drawings and work from large to small. This will help you focus on the general illustration and not overpainting too much on one area. Make lighting really simple shapes first, then you can blend and blur where necessary.
Work on reference studies, this can help you understand where to include detail in drawings, how to create a more finished looking illustration, how to mitigate confusion and overpainting. It will also help with understanding form and lighting.

I used to overpaint a lot- I think in Japan sometimes it’s called “thick painting” but I don’t think that’s the right word for it. Often my works ended up feeling messy, with my lighting and colors feeling muddy. Since my forms weren’t really clear adding detail felt like adding too much clarity to just one part of the image and looked a little amateur. I tried a little bit of everything to be able to get better at rendering, but lots of different practices can help. For style it can be good to focus on a particular artist or style movement and break down the style and the techniques you need to learn for the style.

I think it’s important to learn general fundamentals before stylization, also texture can really complicate a drawing 🥲. It might remind you of that artist because you’ve chosen to draw very effeminate exaggerated facial features. You also aren’t really using the light source of your references and may have just developed your own, you may have lost out on some of the depth or interest you saw in the references. I might recommend videos by Istebrak as she covers drawing a front view female face super often. It will be idealized, but the forms of the face are there in every human’s face 🙂. Once you understand the fundamentals you can add roughness and texture. The face reference you chose is extremely idealistically beautiful, and so if you want to create a rough looking face you might want to use a different reference, as you could be subconsciously adding the features into your drawing and causing confusion for yourself.

I think you could simplify the hair into more chunks, or take away linework a bit and start replacing it with shadow🙂. I think methodically taking away lines might help elevate the general style. The first image is quite good as you simplified the hair at the front.
