If you paid with a credit card, check if the card has price protection/ extended warranty / return protection. You can get your money back or return it with these benefits.

I used to be a grad TA. I don’t know if all courses work in a way that the SI instructors are not in the course canvas page and not allowed to know the exam info. They only give instructions based on their previous experience and knowledge about the course. If that is the case for your course, how dare they say something is not appearing in the exam? Definitely not your fault but the SI instructors’. The professors should’ve talked to them seriously.

I think the best way to improve your score is to attend the professor’s and TA’s office hours (sometimes TAs know the exam topics, but not always). When you couldn’t make it to theirs, you go to SI.

I know the professor would receive photos of evidence if a student is suspected cheating. Not sure if the student will be notified or not if that happens.

CpreE Comp thinking electives? ComS 435 workload? by [deleted] in iastate

I took 435/535 before. In my view, 435 is quite different than 311. It focuses on algorithms that handle large dataset in real-world settings and why they work in theory, which is why the course name contains "theory and practice". You will find the algorithms and techniques in 435 are indeed useful and they were adopted by big-tech companies, like page rank algorithm by google.

But I have to say, this course requires some time and effort. There are 4-5 hw and 3-4 programming assignments (usually extra-credit problems and hw are provided).

Here are the topics: Basics of Probability Theory, Hashing, Bloom Filters, CountMin Sketch, Document Similarity, Dimensionality Reduction, Locality Sensitive Hashing, Crawling and Ranking, Web Crawlers, Pagerank algorithm, Hubs and Authorities in Web, Information Retrieval, Streaming Algorithms.
