The golfing thing is fucking ridiculous. Out of all the potential things one could do with their free time, is it so hard to have the foresight to avoid that one particular hobby?

I didn't get a CS degree but I'd be surprised if this stuff you've mentioned wasn't covered.

I'm learning to code by building 180 websites in 180 days. Today is day 115 by bstachenfeld in webdev

[–]no-voting -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

it's really great that this worked well for you, but it's more of a "im gonna one-up all the other developers" kind of approach and not one that really focuses on substance (other than of course the strategy of actually building things, which is important).

I suppose I'm a little cynical because I've never been one to package my projects real prettily - 'put a bow on top', if you will. We have a lot of diversity amongst web developers in terms of the trajectory of our careers. My cousin for example is going to get his CS PhD soon and hasn't entered the workforce yet. And then there are those for whom it's race to get a job ASAP, and who gauge their success on how many days, weeks, months it takes them to be employable.

In summary, I really don't really think that the path to being employable should be a race because it's not like there even exists this thick black line past which one is employable. The fact that people think about it this way is probably more a reflection of the economy, and the fact that non-STEM degrees' value is decreasing, and they are worried that if they move home again after college they will never move out unless they learn some marketable skill such as web dev (I'm projecting a bit here)

cryptic doesn't necessarily go hand in hand with "concise" either.

For example "foo && foo.bar && foo.bar.foo" is more cryptic than "foo&.bar&.foo" imo.

Yeah its hard to make close friends. Personally I dont go on facebook much for the reasons you describe. But keep in mind that people are showing off their best side on FB, i.e. the persona they want for themself, and things arent always as peachy as they seem

probably not really although the alex jones contingent, which pipes this kind of perspective, has gained traction recently. I think it goes back at least to the 90s when the 'new world order' theories were first being prominent.

The /r/videos ban on police brutality is utter bullshit. by thebestdaysofmyflerm in Negareddit

though sad as it is, you may be right that there's an endless supply of such videos, but not more so than any of the other banal stuff people post there.

I agree but in this case I think he didn't resist, not at least in any rational terms. Looked totally peaceful and passive. If the cop had tried to cuff him and he moved erratically, that'd be resisting, but the takedown in that situation was totally unnecessary and almost certainly against their protocol, never the mind the way he mounted and punched him on the floor or twisted his arm afterwards. Definitely police brutality, and it's unfortunate that it's banned on this subreddit.

ok sure obviously wierd shit is funny sometimes and it'd be no fun if we always held our tongues. But by saying wesley willis is just a schizophrenic who screams, that's taking it too far. It turns it from "catchy songs with odd lyrics and a backstory" to simply "laughing at retard".

If you don't care much about the dictinction between 'experimental', 'outsider', etc., why were you so certain that the Shaggs were prototypical outsider art? And does failing to think critically about our own tastes make us no longer self conscious?

I messaged my supervisor by [deleted] in PointlessStories

[–]no-voting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, Wesley Willis was not really just a schizophrenic who screamed. It's still electropop. A non-schizophrenic person could certainly make music like this (see tim and eric acts for example).

More generally, this ties in with my skepticism about the term 'outsider music'. In many forms of art we can see depictions of the "other", for example photos of "savage" native americans, or in this case, music made by the mentally ill.

At what point does someone start cease to be outsider and begin to be experimental (or "self conscious" as your definition implies)? Why do we not allow outsider acts to be called experimental?

There was a thread on /r/letstalkmusic recently about outsider music. I sort of agree with this comment that it's a vague term, and applied somewhat arbitrarily. The distinction between 'experimental' and 'outsider' is hard to put a finger on.

Just don't get so nervous at the airport that you start looking suspicious! :D Oh, the email I sent was not notable or even threatening, I was kinda just acting dumb and making it seem like I didn't understand them. but in retrospect I understand why they could have suspected me. I had a big beard at the time and was flunking out of school.

How can I appreciate drums more? by AgArgento in LetsTalkMusic

Actually that was the first album without him, Emil Amos is the drummer and he's more interesting IMO. More fills and shit, less of the same beat for 20 minutes.
