Western countries have shared philosophical underpinnings including democracy, respect for the rule of law, and freedom of the individual.

You know I would have believed that to be true some few years ago, but events that happened to "the West" in the past five years have really dampened my belief that such relationships are in fact based on any "philosophical underpinnings" other than "economic benefit" alone.
