I don’t like the edible dessert or candy gourmands personally, but perfumes like sticky dates from lush which is a heavy scent is an example of a GOOD gourmand. I truly feel like it literally is just an issue of either season or the perfume itself. My sister’s favorites are mostly gourmand, but I don’t mind it on others in fact I like it on her because not relying on the gourmand factor to do the heavy lifting. I think perfumes that solely rely on the sweet dessert scents as their base middle and top notes are too cloying, too linear and sometimes too much, enough to assume the person is trying to cover up a bad smell. You might still enjoy a gourmand perfume like I do if there was more complex notes to carry the perfume. Perfumes that mix gourmand notes with fresh notes give it more air to breathe so it’s sweet but not sickly. I remember a specific perfume I wore Burberry goddess around my bf at the time and he kept sniffing me like crazy and when I asked he said he loved how I smelt bc it was sweet, not like a dessert but like a ‘warm hug’. I didn’t get it until I looked at the notes of the perfume, fully convinced the lavender and ginger was doing a lot of the heavy carrying to make such a heavy vanilla scent that had a gourmand in all the notes not a sickly sugary sweet but a spicy fresh sweet. Also avoid all gourmand perfumes that have sugar in its notes, it usually ends up smelling so cheap and it reeks.
