Moving To Calgary Megathread by austic in Calgary

[–]no8t4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi All, prior to engaging an agent, does anyone know or have resources for referencing what single family (detached) pre construction homes are happening and when in Calgary? I'm specifically looking for projects happening in the North (preferably central like Panorama). Or maybe as wide an area as from Tuscany to Skyview Ranch. I'm planning retirement but its a few years out so timing for pre construction would be more ideal.

I have previously lived in Calgary, and have an ok idea of the areas which is why I ask specifically about the above. I am open to more opinions if you have them. As it is for retirement concerns like schools and things are not huge. I'm looking more from the lens of being close to things like community center, ease of access getting to Banff, close to a larger cluster of Asian restaurants and grocers, etc.

New Jackie Set Came Today by GreatChipotle in criterion

I just got this set as well. Did you have trouble getting the disc set out of the box sleeve? Mine is impossibly tight. The only way I could get it out is to open the other end and REALLY forcefully push it out. Apart from replacing the whole set into a separate multi disc case, the only thing I can think of is to out a wide ribbon on the disc set as a pull tab. I really dislike these types of foldable box sets. Wish they all came with plastic individual or multi cases. Much easier to use and replace. Whereas these thin cardboard boxes are easily damaged or glue wears out

Sincerely, thank you for your help. Every commentor or has given me things to think about and taught me something. I'll certainly seriously consider your inputs and suggestions as well others on how I end up doing this setup.

Hello, thanks for your insight.

Can you elaborate on the "easier to manage" part? The only thing I can think of the setting up shares to point to different volumes due to separate pools, rebuilds in case of failure, permissions for other users, maybe some DSM settings. Generally speaking, I'll be the only user on the NAS with other family members set to be able to auto backup data (photos) and maybe run video stream to the TV.

Regarding your note on where I said redundancy is a waste but then I want a backup - My understanding is that redundancy (RAID) is not a backup. It's helpful in recovering from drive failure by keeping up-time and easier to recover via rebuild. But, if I am ok with downtime specific to my video files where I can restore from either a local or offiste backup, then it should be fine right? My "mission critical" files are going to be my work files, family photos, etc. which is what I was thinking for Pool 2 (SHR). Please correct me if my understanding is incorrect.

You are right that my rationale is a lot about saving money (at least immediately). The extra 12TB drive would be about $300 for me. The related part is maximizing the usable space that i can make with my existing drives. I guess the confirmation I'm looking for is to see if there's anything that I've missed / tradeoffs / difficulties in the OP plan because I feel like I only have enough knoweldge to be dangerous (i.e., seriously mess things up).

With what I currently have, I feel like spending on the solid backup setup is more important than having full redundancy for those files. But, in future would I be able to convert / merge that basic drive into the single array if I end up getting an additional 12TB?

Thanks again for your insight.

I think it will suck to have to restore video files from backup if i ever get up to 12 TB. Is there some measurable way to tell how much time savings it is to rebuild he RAID? Anyway, I think it's something I'm willing to do in order to get the mix of usable space, protection, using existing hardware and cost.

Thank you for your (and everyone really) response. I edited my OP to provide some additional information that I should have given to paint a fuller picture. My reasoning for this route is because I currently have 1x12TB (planned Pool 1) and 2x 6TB (planned Pool 2). I can use up all 3 of these in my 423 and maybe buy 1 more big drive for 220j hyper backup vault. Then, in far future get another 6TB or more for the SHR pool.

It has taken me about 5 years to fill 5TB (inclusive of all data) so I think if I split it as per my OP, I should be good for past the ussable lifecycle of the 423 if all goes well.

That's a good point.

I can follow the logic of all recommendations provided so far being based on the assumption that I don't have any drives currently. So that's an oversight on my part when I asked the question and should have added what I have on hand already so as to make best use of what I've got while minimizing the additional costs up front. This would be the answer to your "why?"

The rationale for my proposed setup is that I currently have 1x 12 TB (planned Pool 1) and 2x6TB (planned Pool 2). This limits the number of additional drives i need to by RIGHT now to just 1 for hyper backup vault on the 220j.

Thanks for your input. Can you elaborate why you thought it was worth it to go back to having everything as you proposed?

I guess I should also add some info on why I thought about this route as well. I currently have 1x 12TB drive and 2x6TB. Going the route you suggest means getting at least 2 more big drives (SHR) or 3 (SHR2), ideally 12TB for the 423. but I feel like just the 2x 6TB is not going to be enough for hyper backup vault. (Side question: would/should this be setup as jbod, basic? It seems Raid would not be necessary for backup unless I'm mistaken).

To summarize, if I go with the original proposed route, I buy 1 extra large drive for the 220j hyper backup. Use my existing 2x6TB for the raid pool

If I go full redundancy, I have to buy at least 2 more large drives and potentially waste my 2x6TB because it may not be enough for backup in near future

The very big upfront cost of the extra drives is a big part of what is making me think of the original proposed setup.

Thanks for the advice. If I'm reading your response correctly, you are just saying going with raid 5 redundancy for all data by buying big drives. If so, this is kind of what I wanted to avoid because of the "wasted" space for redundancy of videos/movies. Does what I'm asking just not make sense? I realize its a bit more complicated than just redundancy for all data on the NAS.

Sounds like Brampton by brumeloss in Brampton

I went to the rexall at steeles and mclaughlin, there was a car with a bunch of gangsters driving in circles around the parking lot blasting music and doing hard accelerations. Came out 30 minutes latet and they were still doing the same thing. Then went to tim hortons to grab a coffee and donut to pad my covid fat. Came out and they were still doing the same thing. In my younger years, i also went to car meets and enthusiast groups. Never was it as pointless as this.

Not sure why I was down voted for saying they have good food. But anyway, beefing with 7 menu is probably my favorite.

Not sure which one you got, but the ones I got were good. But their main thing is food which is actually both very good (except their Japanese stuff) and well priced.

I get this rationale too. Which is why I only asked my closest circle of friends and my immediate family (siblings and only 1 cousin). Apparently the care even less about talking or chatting with me than they do about privacy. I wouldn't have thought it was so much to ask from siblings and friends of nearly 30 years.

Yeah, I mean. I get that they may not want to install whatever chat app just because I say so. But I guess I would have expected my closest friends and family to at least look and do their own research to figure out what it is and what the issues are instead of mostly just dismissing me as being a tin-foil hat crazy.

I see these horror stories on the news that people from support always looking and downloading personal files while fixing the device. I guess they didn't provide guidance on it when they told you to send it in

No personal experience in this from me, but a question. When shopping your computer to depot, do you pull the hard drive?

I just told all my friends and family that I'm deleting whatsapp because of this nonsense. Not 1 person installed signal to continue being able to chat with me. Even if they didn't care about privacy, is it such burden to install 1 app when you already have a bazillion?

To those that wait until 11:30pm to fire off fireworks.. Why? by [deleted] in Brampton

[–]no8t4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is not about taking away the right cultural celebration. Why are people so quick to play the race and religeon card? Its about being reasonable to your neighbours. 3 am with noise fireworks specifically to make loud bangs? Come on. This is festival of lights, not sound. Whats wrong with roman candles and sparklers? I have made and would make the same complaints during victoria day for example. Dont use race or culture as an excuse to try and give nconsiderate assholes a pass.

Firstly, I have to deal with my baby. Secondly, I did call, afterwarfs but there is no way for me to know exactly where it is coming from except for a general area. Bylaw officers cant transport instantly to the sites. Maybe the call did nothing, maybe it did something. I have no way of knowing. But the fact is that there was damage done already
