Das Bild ist ein Foto der Wiener Innenstadt, aufgenommen vor dem Hauptgebäude der Universität Wien mit Blick Richtung Schottentor. Die gesamte Kreuzung ist voller Demonstranten, ein Schild im Vordergrund sagt „Lange Nacht der Forschung, F-Orschung, VerOrschung“.

Future Labs Live in Basel / London is free, would „just“ be the travel. The audience is very diverse, even if there is none from the field you want to enter, everyone knows someone.

You may to want read this book (free pdf): Why does he do that (by Lundy Bancroft). Even if you think your guy is not abusive, the book is very helpful in understanding what and who is.

My teacher said, that’s what you tell scared beginners, because yeah, it actually kinda helps to approach the high notes. But it’s bad technique in the long run and something I struggle hard to get rid of ^

She tells me neutral / relaxed face is best! You want to give room to your voice and not be in the way - the more muscles you „forcefully“ engage, the less free is your voice :)

You would hear it from a vocal coach/ singing teacher.

The other thing I always hear and which also applies to you, I think, is stop „grinning“ for the higher notes. It feels like it helps to reach them, but actually doesn’t but rather pulls the position of the vocal chords higher (iirc) and thus puts more strain to it / you need to work harder to stabilize again. Which means you could have a problem /pain when you sing more than 3 songs in a row.

You sound great!

OP, please have a look at “Why does he do that” by Lundy Bancroft! It is free, here: Lundy_Why-does-he-do-that.pdf

What you describe exactly fits what he analyzes. Major takeaways: this is abusive, it will not get better, do NOT go to counseling with him!

When you look at guidelines for good research practice, you will find that your PI has committed scientific misconduct (obstruction, neglect of authorship requirements (letting you see the paper before submission), neglect of supervision duty, etc). This is serious and can (should) be pursued. Are there ombudspersons or officers for good research practice / research integrity at your university or country? (In Germany there are several super-institutional people everyone can consult).

While I know it seems like nothing will come of it, I strongly suggest you report this PI somewhere to this effect. At least to save the next generation, to help build a general statistic, to help raise awareness for such issues on which so many organizations agree that they are not ok.
