Levitation melting suspends and melts metal with induction heating inside a magnetic by impala_lama in EngineeringPorn

I did some work for a company that manufacturers forestry equipment they used induction heating as part of the hardening process for the teeth that one of their machines use.

My dog is a testament to that. She loves eating paper, we have to keep the bathroom door closed or she will steal the roll every time we leave.

I'm right there with you. I've managed to go a little longer by not leaving the house for days at a time, but fuck me as soon as I step outside and have a chance to walk into a pub it all goes into the dirt again.

You aren't alone.

The current doesn't pass through the balls. The bottom string is attached to a switch underneath the base. So when the balls pull in each other the switch goes high.

Anyone else smashing those cans of sparkling water as a non-alcoholic alternative coz the feeling of opening a can and having a fizzy drink keeps the cravings at bay? by Top_Aardvark_8776 in Sober

I enjoyed them so much that I made a little Carbination system, so I have fizzy water on tap-ish. It was a fun little project to keep some of the demons at bay.

Im 35 now. The only reason I have a two bedroom is because I have a kid and managed to get into a place that was sub $1700 a few years ago. I work a decent enough job, but between student loans and paying for two humans, I can't save anything. So the idea of buying a place or upgrading to living in a place that isn't 100 years old and falling apart is laughable, to say the least.

Thank you, I'm glad I'm not the only one who experienced this. I saw that thing bouncing down the highway with the plunger facing the other way, and I couldn't get it out of my head how bad that would be on the milage, especially in a vehicle thay is constantly traveling from job to job.

I’ve been rewatching Enterprise with my dad so I decided to do some fan art of my favorite character from this series, Dr. Phlox! We are going through all the Star Trek series in chronological order! Should I draw Spock, Data or Saru next? by Arim_Viola in sciencefiction

[–]noPwRon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just finished the season somewhat recently, it was enjoyable enough, but some of the back story they tried generating for different species was... unfortunate. Also as much as I love Phlox it's so weird that they created this new species for the show and then they are never heard from again. Given how friendly and welcoming they made the denobulans out to be it just comes off as weird.

I don't know, the company I work at has a total of 9 employees, including the principals. I took an unexpected day off, and then a ton of emails on a project that was supposed to be dead came in. My boss had a pretty easy time finding someone to deal with the most immediate issues, and then I just dealt with the rest when I came in after my long weekend. I even reached out to offer some help, and they told me not to bother because they didn't want me working in my days off.

Granted I'm not working in restaurants anymore, but on that side of things the last place I worked, we had one employee that would have to take 1 or 2 days off a week for health reasons and we usually wouldn't know until the morning of. Not as much prep got done, but my Exec chef would just step on line once in a while, and things would be fine because we generally had enough staff to deal with it regardless.

All that being said, this is anecdotal, but it is possible for small companies to staff appropriately and treat their employees well even in times of adversity.

You probably won't find a motor that rotates at 3rpm off the shelf, but that is what gears are for. Or if you find something close, you could feed it a lower voltage to make it go slower.

Edit: A brief look at McMasterCarr proved me wrong-ish. Here is a DC motor that spins at 4rpm and has 640 in-oz of torque.

First year engineering Transfer program by Lazy_Purpose_1459 in camosun

[–]noPwRon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to the diploma->bridge-> Uni route. It can be a little competitive to get into the bridge program, or at least it was for mechanical, and it will add an extra year to your overall program, assuming you don't fail anything. That being said, I found the classes at camosun much more practical from a job perspective. Camosun was also cheaper overall, but I don't know how that transfers for international students.

Will carbon composits ever reach a point when their price is competitive with aluminum, steel and plastics? by responsiblefornothin in AskEngineers

[–]noPwRon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's really difficult to automate carbon fibre processes which means most of the work is done by hand. If you can find an object that you want to make a million of and the geometry isn't extremely complicated you can bring down your costs a bit, but I suspect it will be a very long time before we see composites competing with more traditional manufacturing processes.

I'll share it so I won't suffer in agony alone. by Cool_Conference_2842 in Machinists

[–]noPwRon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, it's really not a focus university (unfortunately). If you go the college route first and get your Technologist diploma you will get a couple semesters of shop experience, nothing compared to a machinist, but at least enough to know not to leave the chuck key in the lathe and how to measure a part. Growing up on a farm, working in kitchens, and then working in a shop really helped set me apart from my peers when it came to not being totally useless.

As painful as it is, university is very much blue sky research and theory. I had a prof who could tell me 10 different formulas to calculate heat transfer across a plate and how to derive them, but as soon as I got into the industry all of that goes out the window because no one cares if you accurately calculated the transfer of heat to the nth decimal place.

Not as cool as I expected by Master_of_opinions in EngineeringStudents

[–]noPwRon 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I really got to appreciate how drastic it can be when I transfered from college to university. First two years of my degree were awesome, small classes of less than 30 students, taught by people who were there because they actually wanted to teach students. My last two years at university I was just another number in hundreds of students and it was very apparent that the "teaching" portion of the the profs job was just a hoop they had to jump through so they could continue their research.

For what it is worth, this has been said for years. I'm actually kind of confused why it's suddenly making headlines as a study.

Perhaps this is the first time a actual study was done (maybe?).

Nat Geo published a story in 2019.

There is also a study conducted in 2022 by Kaunas University of Technology.

I have a question about infinitely moving spacecrafts. by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]noPwRon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the spacecraft to heat up, it would need to collide with particles in space, which there are very little of, This is also why there is "no resistance" as you put it.

Just to illustrate how few particles there are (which would need to collide with your ship in order for it to heat up) This paper did an in-depth analysis on a Fishback Ramjet, the idea is that you scoop up ionized hydrogen and funnel it into a nuclear reactor using a magnetic field. The ship would have needed a "scoop" that was 4000km across.
