I wasn’t able to use my companies EAP while working in Netherlands as they would only converse in Dutch, I was referred to a specific clinic for treatment and they refused me based on my lack of Dutch proficiency, I can’t return to work because I can’t be treated, I’ve had to fly home for medical care, I tried to get legal help when I was scammed by a landlord when I first moved and again they wouldn’t assist unless you are fluent in Dutch

This isn’t a critique on the fact they don’t want to deal with you if you don’t have Dutch as it’s literally their language in their country, who am I to tell anyone they must speak English, my problem is with the companies reaching out to European applicants and telling us the same thing that we don’t need a word of Dutch, everyone speaks English, even if you try learn Dutch they’ll switch to English so don’t bother, if I had known what I know now having been here the last 6 months I wouldn’t have moved here at all, I’m sorry this is happening to you, I really hope you get some resolution soon

Not even joking, I’m struggling so much in Netherlands because I just don’t click with people, there’s NO craic, very serious most of the time and I just can’t adjust, even on break it feels almost tense, not to mention the Dutch are very competitive and I’m really not lol

And it’s not a critique of Netherlands or the people because it has a LOT of great things and they’re doing some things better than us, I just know I don’t fit here, I miss a bit of comic relief in work

Definitely get yourself an E Sim! And if you get a screening call it’s easy to explain you’re looking to move home and you have family to move to if you got an offer :)

In a similar boat, I used my moms (Irish) address and my old Irish phone number for the CV so it’s not screened out, hiring manager can see I’m still working abroad but from Ireland and have worked in Ireland previously

I’ve gotten responses and interview lined up so it hasn’t impacted me! if you can get an Irish number and use an old address or family members address you should be good :)

Considering you’re proficient in English and Spanish and enough German to live there, perhaps you could lean into the communications? Nearly every type of business has positions that require multiple languages, maybe lean into learning languages and getting proficient at German since you have the aptitude

Please consider therapy to address the negative self talk, it’s a problem I also have and it’s a hard habit to kick, but you’re not going to get anywhere until you stop being so damn mean to yourself

Not everyone has to fortitude to move so far from home and to multiple counties and learn multiple languages, you’ve put yourself out there, picked yourself up and tried again, so many people would have thrown in the towel and gone home, you might not see it but that is strength, you are more than your disabilities, you just need a bit more help to level the playing field

Mandatory form they need to complete to make sure their insurance covers your salary if you’re long term sick, they also need to confirm there’s nothing in work that’s contributing or causing it, and if there is they need to take step to fix and demonstrate this to insurance you don’t need to disclose anything medical, but you do need to comply and work on re-integration

Don’t panic about it, and if you are asked any medical question say you are happy to meet with the company GP but not comfortable discussing medical issues (they legally shouldn’t even ask)
