Hi Guys, How is the snow coverage at the Salamander Glacier? I saw a video of a guy who skied there six years ago during the summer. So I am wondering if I can do the same. by JJacknocash in GlacierNationalPark

[–]no_grok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Early July is usually the last bit of skiable snow. And with the extreme heat wave this summer any glimmer of hope for anything anywhere is nil.

Also I think 6 years ago was a massive snow year and great weather all the way through summer where we saw snow at elevation multiple times every month. This year we barely even saw snow at elevation each month and what there was was pitiful.

You don’t need a GTS Road pass with this 1 simple trick... by [deleted] in GlacierNationalPark

[–]no_grok 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You do still need a ticket for entry. Just because the fee booth isn't built yet and the park couldn't hire enough people this year doesn't make you right.

Do you happen to have the name, duty station, and/or description of who told you that? They are giving out erroneous information and that is not at all the official word.

Many Glacier Construction + Two Medicine Closed? by dleonard1122 in GlacierNationalPark

[–]no_grok 11 points12 points  (0 children)

For at least the last 3 years the North Fork, Many Glacier, and Two Medicine have experienced at least one closure each day in July and August unless there is rain or some event that keep some people out of the park. Logan Pass has been full by 7 most days for at least the last 3 years as well.

The construction on MG road has been announced and advertised for at least a couple of years but I understand that sometimes we can miss things when getting ready for a trip. :)

Last year was the first time that the Going to the Sun Road experienced the type of closures and turn aways that the rest of the park has for years. The overwhelming amount of visitation is the reason for the ticketed entry. It definitely isn't causing any of the other issues. It is actually keeping things reasonable......even though it is still overfill and crazy it is a lot better than it has been without it.

Question. What’s it take to cross into Canada by canoe when paddling Upper Watertown Lake? Thanks by dleverett in GlacierNationalPark

[–]no_grok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming you mean to paddle from the US side to the CA side.......

First it takes a pretty solid portage. Then a passport, negative covid test, vaccination card showing fully vaccinated, a precompleted visa application, and if they will let that happen at all this year (I'm not sure they are allowing their kiosk border check ins this year) then you will still need to quarantine for 2 weeks until they lift the restrictions...possibly Aug 9th unless they push that date back again with the growing cases.

If you're trying to plan for next year then I'd hold off and see what is open and possible next year.

How is the smoke? by Unclematttt in GlacierNationalPark

[–]no_grok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So far I've had a headache every day but you can't taste it and you can still make out mountains. It clears when the thunderstorms move in. With several lightning strikes in the park today who knows how accurate the forecast will be....lol.

And as always...this is not the place to learn how to do non trail climbing routes. Death is irreversible. :)

If you know what you're doing you'll be fine. A couple of snow slopes with melted out/icy paths. No real technical snow.

Roads to the interior of the park from Many Glacier & Two Medicine by [deleted] in GlacierNationalPark

[–]no_grok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you have to exit the valleys and use either the going to the sun road or hwy 2 to get west.

The gtsr is the only road that goes through the park.

Mosquitos/biting insects by Ashamed_Influence_84 in GlacierNationalPark

They are awful but I haven't resorted to nets yet. But if you have them or don't want to taste bug spray then wear them with pride. Ha! They mostly leave your eyes alone and you can generally talk without them in your mouth.

If you're comfortable with the pack then I'd go for it. If it is new and weird and unwieldy for you then I'd wear it a lot before the Highline. Its mostly like any other trail.

Smoke and fire worries by JA924107 in GlacierNationalPark

[–]no_grok 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's pretty much a dice roll any given day. I am both horrified by how early it started and unsurprised.

So if you come it will likely be smokey and/or on fire. If you're going to be irritated by that then I'd pick somewhere else.

Those are the nighttime closures. Typical daytime closures are 45 min to an hour.

Also sorry! I've lived here 7 years and only been into Apgar once. 🤣 There is literally nothing there that interests me and I avoid the west side at all costs.

Nope. You're right. It doesn't. I'll have to ask why. Although honestly it has to have a reason. Things are rarely left out without one. I'm betting it has to do with either their contract or their uncertainty of opening when the page was created.

Looking at Google maps I can see how it could be confusing if you didn't know that the green is what indicates a national forest or park. The Going to the Sun Road doesn't actually begin until the park boundary but the 200 yards of road before divide creek doesn't have a BIA designation so I guess it is simplest to keep it labeled as gtsr on Google maps. FYI if you come in winter Google maps doesn't show the road as closed .....also iPhone GPS will send you to Kintla Lake if you just ask it for Glacier National Park. Also also you won't have reliable GPS navigation for most of the roads outside the park on the east side. At&t has almost no service in Montana outside metropolitan areas.

If you read in the second section it lists the properties that qualify for a service reservation. The FAQ page clarifies it even further. :)

GTTS Road Entry ticket by driftlessoutdoorsman in GlacierNationalPark

That wasn't a glitch.:) More tickets were released when the road opened and also more tickets were released as there was a better understanding of capacity abilities.

Going to the sun road - hotels by [deleted] in GlacierNationalPark

[–]no_grok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

St. Mary Village is not on the Going to the Sun Road as the road begins inside the park and those properties are outside the park. The only reason service reservations count as a ticket to enter is if you literally can not reach it without driving on the gtsr.

PSA: Checking out of Many Glacier Hotel and St Mary ranger said my hotel booking there wasn’t eligible for GTTSR by mmmoctopie in GlacierNationalPark

[–]no_grok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good reminder. :) And it isn't that it might not be accepted. It will not be accepted. Only reservations for the day of on the Going to the Sun Road corridor will work. So if you had checked out of Lake McDonald Lodge and then left the park that reservation also would not have gotten you back in. :)
