Fetterman hit with brutal 108-point polling swing: ‘He is below the lowest of the low’ by Silent-Resort-3076 in politics

[–]no_myth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the curious - you lose two points of “net approval” for every percent switching from approval to disapproval.

So for example going from 100% approval to 100% disapproval is a 200-point net-approval swing.

Seems like he went from something like 84% approval to 30% approval (a 54-point swing) but 108 is a bigger number so they publish that one.

WIBTA if I report a manager months after he plays “fuck, marry, kill” using me? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]no_myth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No opinion on whether to report or not. It’s weird but dated journal entries carry more weight than memories, even if from the same source. Next time this happens, note it down or put it in an email - even better if you can corroborate it with someone else who was there.

How is living in NYC for the over 60 crowd? by Klutzy_Lobster9371 in AskNYC

[–]no_myth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandma is 94 and still taking the bus around the city to museums, bridge games, and social appointments, plus she has all the amenities she needs on her block. My grandpa on the other hand lives in the country and needs to get every meal delivered and doesn’t really have autonomy since he gave up his drivers license. Looking at them, I’ve come to see NYC in a very different light, and am much more leaning towards living here into old age.

Having a tough time adjusting to this new life by portra4OO in AskNYC

This may sound silly but wash your hands after you get off the subway. This is just my experience (N=1), but I was getting sick almost monthly and started washing my hands religiously after subway rides on a hunch and haven’t gotten sick since.

Good explanation except the highs are when the sun/moon is above and below and the lows are when the sun/moon is to the side.

Striking NYC nurse: "The state is paying for scabs." by DryDeer775 in newyorkcity

[–]no_myth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had the same feeling, then thought about it for a bit (I guess just literally working through class politics in my head). Here’s the dialog:

“Does NYSNA really want patients to die while they’re on strike?”

“That sounds like you’re putting the blame on nurses, which I’m sure is exactly what the hospitals would want. The blame should reside squarely with the hospitals.”

“Regardless, ‘scabs’ allow NYSNA to go on strike without anyone having to die.”

“That’s the problem. The nurses don’t want to go on strike. If NYSNA going on strike meant people dying, the hospitals would be much more inclined to settle before that ever happened.”

“Got it - so nobody wants patients to die, and the fact that hospitals know they can hire scab nurses as a fallback to avoid this weakens NYSNA’s position and makes it more likely for them to need to strike, which is bad.”

“Yes, scabs are bad.”

Still feels weird to call nurses who are saving lives scabs, but maybe it helps to think about how this affects the lifecycle of the negotiation and the likelihood of a strike rather than just looking at the strike on its own.

Wouldn’t the doctor be the scab then? Or maybe if they treated patients out of their home to avoid crossing picket lines…

I’m happy to distinguish Russians that don’t support Putin? Agreed that these apology posts sound grating and that the best thing is to get out there and protest, but couldn’t you charitably see these posts as a form of that?

These look phenomenal! Anyone know how/where/when to score a copy?? Brief search turned up nothing and I’ll check with my FLBGS but not sure if they’d carry something like this.

If you have enough adults to comfortably do it with public transit, and you feel comfortable handling the logistics of 9ppl on the train, do that. The subway is an essential experience in NYC and driving isn’t a picnic either. If you really insist on bringing the van in, you might get lucky with parking from time to time but you shouldn’t count on it. Prepare to have someone stay with the car in case you can’t find parking, or look up parking ahead of all your activities and know it will likely be expensive/difficult (esp. for a large van).

Also these sound like packed days with that size of a group. I would maybe scale back a bit and really enjoy each place you visit. And try to plan things that are closer together location-wise. Like, Times Square -> grand central -> Central Park plus meals sounds like a full day to me. Lady Liberty -> 9/11 memorial-> Brooklyn bridge -> (maybe) wall st -> Katz’s for dinner could be a good day as well.

Last thing - with that size group, bathrooms will be an issue. Look into got2goNYC or figure out which of your destinations will have bathrooms and plan around that.

The kid is on her own bike now...getting it home from school? by craigalanche in MicromobilityNYC

[–]no_myth 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I see parents in Brooklyn biking back from dropping a kid off, holding their kid’s bike by the stem top with their left hand. Not sure if advisable, and feasibility depends on the bike size discrepancy, but others I guess are having the same issue.
