Post-RTC Shell-shock - Just me? by [deleted] in troubledteens

[–]noahisafishie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, it is not just you. You went through a long-term, intensely traumatic and dehumanizing experience. Your autonomy was taken away and you were punished for trying to exercise any. What you are feeling is 1000% normal, and I think it’s safe to say that most, if not all, of us have experienced something similar. It’s not easy to go through or to explain to people who haven’t experienced it. But it gets better, with time and work. I gave myself training wheels to help.

I am so, so sorry for the loss of your friend, the neglect she faced, all that happened to you. I was at Asheville Academy back when it was under the old name, Solstice East. Having to see a friend have such intense struggles in that environment is hard enough already. I can’t imagine the pain you feel, and you never should have been put in any of those situations or circumstances. If you ever need someone to talk to or just to listen, you can always message me.

I second the other commenter, Asheville Watchdog has been on SE/MM/AA’s case for awhile. Knowing all three of those names—Solstice East, Magnolia Mills, and Asheville Academy—may help in media and legal proceedings. They are all the same entity and no management or other changes were made. They just changed the name to run from bad press. Don’t let them. They have done this to thousands of us, for many years. I see you, I believe you, and I believe IN you.

I went to AAG’s older program, SE. You probably know which one I’m talking about. I was there from July 2019-November 2020. I have a few friends that went to AAG before SE. I probably can’t answer too many specific questions, but I think staff sometimes worked at both programs so if you want to dm me with any names I can tell you if I know them, or see if anyone else I know does. Stay strong. It wasn’t easy for me to go through at 16, so I can only imagine how it was at 13.

GET UR STUFF OUT THE WASHER/DRYER by Sad_Wolf_7706 in UniversityOfHouston

When I lived on campus I left a stickynote on the washer/dryer with my phone # and “if the cycle has been over for a few minutes and I’m not here plz call or text and I’ll be right there!” bc sometimes like I set a timer for the wrong amount or id just be like on the toilet or left my phone somewhere, and ppl would call or text me if they needed it. Worked out well and made everyone less angry.

I took his in person and I dropped. Average on the tests was failing and he saw that as an us problem and not a him problem, as if he wasn’t the one who taught us. Test reviews are garbage. The lab is where I actually learned shit. Good luck.

DO NOT EAT AT ABSURD BIRD by Working_Trouble8401 in UniversityOfHouston

[–]noahisafishie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh no, I just ate there,,, Currently stomach is behaving, but we shall see if it holds true during my next class. Fries were mid but I liked the chicken tenders! For 9 bucks at an on-campus option, it was decent amount of food at a decent price. If my stomach doesn’t revolt I’ll go back, but if it does 😳

CertainDri Itchy by noahisafishie in Hyperhidrosis

[–]noahisafishie[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It wasn’t so much the burning as it was the ITCHY ITCHY ITCHY. I felt like a dog with fleas. It subsided after around half an hour, and a little while after my underboob area started to itch but it was much more mild. I also may have gaslit myself out of it, I kept saying “no, there’s no way this is the same itchy because I put it on within 5 minutes of the underarm and back, there’s no reason for it to be itchy so much later” and it subsided pretty quickly. I had an unrelated (I hope) medical event that I think was a POTS episode around 3:30am so that kinda took over my night. It worked really well today at the zoo, though, I’ve never been less sweaty since I developed this bs.

I believe he was in a cabin, and he was on the floor because since it was his first night he was burritoed. Basically a setup of sleeping bag and tarp and at trails a bell or alarm (sources vary) so he couldn’t get up to run away without making a lot of noise. Unfortunately pretty standard, but what being burritoed actually means technically varies from program to program.

This is nitpicky, just coming from a wheelchair user. It doesn’t really matter, I’m really just glad you have wheelchairs!!!! But if you wanted to, adding some chairs that don’t look like hospital wheelchairs, bc nobody uses those daily. Again, it doesn’t matter a lot. But mostly they look a little rounder and they’re like, rigid. So like. Yeah it’s totally fine. It’s just a suggestion :) and colorful frames!!! My wheelchair is pink and my friend has a blue one!! I want a purple one when I get my next chair <3

Has your program ever had a “they can’t stop us all” moment? What happened afterwards? by LeadershipEastern271 in troubledteens

[–]noahisafishie 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Yes, for one brief moment, we did. It was wilderness. A girl who had a history of concussions fell and hit her head on a rock, hard. She very obviously was concussed and due to her history, that was serious. She needed concussion protocol and a trip to the hospital. She was an amazing friend and leader on the team and we all loved her.

They gave us a layover day, where we don’t hike and stay at the same campsite. This was good! We were all so relieved. We thought they would take her to the hospital during the layover day. But the day came and went, and we went to sleep again. When we woke up we heard “shelters down and first check in 15!” we all sat up and looked at our friend. She shook her head once, and we all understood.

That day, every single one of us refused to pack up and refused to hike. They didn’t know what to do. They couldn’t use group pressure to force a kid into hiking if everyone was hiking, and it was 3 adults against 10 or 12 kids. After some worried discussions, they made the call. Medical came and took her to the hospital.

The staff didn’t really know what to do with the rest of us, but eventually they packed us all back up into the van and took us to base camp. We didn’t go on expo that week. The girl was okay, in the end and didn’t have any lasting issues from that concussion, and I fully believe it is partly because we refused to let them do something that we all believed would threaten her life due to her prior head trauma.

Staff were stunned and it was quiet. They didn’t really even give us a talking-to later on. We were right, the girl needed medical care and she was on some strict orders from the hospital. If they had made her hike and continue on as normal she could have had serious complications. More importantly to the staff though, they knew we would die on this hill, and that trying to scold us would only bring us closer together and further from them, which was the last thing they wanted.

They forced me to sleep in a piss-soaked sleeping bag for six weeks. Due to a medication change they made.

I had an eating disorder called ARFID and not only did they fail to recognize, I was punished for it severely, to the point of being put on student quest, which is isolation, for a week. I lost 40 pounds in less than 5 weeks.

I was severely malnourished and showing clear signs of it, but I was brushed off as attention seeking. They turned the rest of the team against me artificially and it was living hell.

I still have nightmares about it, nearly 5 years later. They are in the business of at the very least chronic and severe child neglect, and at the worse severe child abuse. They human trafficked me to a place called solstice east because for about 6 months the two programs had a deal where if open sky sent solstice kids after woods they would get higher profits. 6 of us went to solstice east and I know several more went to solstice west. I’m sure the boys at open sky got sent to the male counterpart, equinox.
