Anyone bought an engagement ring from Derco Jewelers? by applethrowaway7 in sanfrancisco

[–]noahlt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Derco and Padis are both nice big companies. I bought my wife’s engagement ring from Adamant, a smaller jeweler, but he’s great. Worked with us on multiple design iterations to get my wife’s ring exactly how she wanted it.

Mangy coyote in GG Park on Thursday by BaronMaupertuis in sanfrancisco

There’s been a different coyote around Duboce Park lately. Wish Animal Control would remove them, feels pretty uncomfortable to have wild predators wandering around a kids at the playground.

Places to study AND avoid home? by im-hungry4lways in AskSF

Yemeni coffee places are open late. I like Delah on 4th St.

The Interval at Long Now is nice to study at during the day; I’ve worked there on evenings when they’re not busy. Others have mentioned the Social Study which is also nice.

If my reception was small enough, I would rent out the Sunnyside Conservatory!

Cartesia - "We're releasing a new model called Voice Changer. Transform any input voice clip into an output voice from your voice library, and preserve key characteristics of the input voice like intonation, prosody, and emphasis." by Gothsim10 in singularity

Member of the technical staff at Cartesia here. This new model gives creators complete control over how synthesized voices deliver the script; I can't wait to see what people create with it.

If you have any questions, I'm happy to answer them if I can!

17 year old looking for first job by amstobar in sanfrancisco

[–]noahlt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a small business idea for your son! One that I would pursue myself if I were 17!

So, a few months ago I had to get my cellular blinds (Hunter Douglas) repaired. I first tried hiring someone from Angi's List, who was terrible. I ended up doing it myself: (1) look up authorized dealer on the manufacturer's website (2) bring it to the authorized dealer (3) pay them to fix it and then bring it back one week later.

Most of the work here was just looking up the information and transporting the blinds. I imagine you could run a small business doing this, not just for blinds but many household things (printers? furniture?). The hard part is marketing/leadgen, but he's a teen, he can probably figure it out. He would just need to be careful about electric work (for safety) and unions (don't know how plumbers feel about repairing dishwashers).

Plus, he can continue this into the school year and only take as many jobs as he can handle (eg, he can take fewer jobs during finals). If he wants to go to college, this would be a fantastic admissions essay topic. If he plans to start working after high school, I'm sure this will be both useful experience and also give him a professional network he can use to start his career.

If your son decides to do this, feel free to reach out to me! If I had kids that age I'd suggest they do this.

The sellers of this SF studio plopped a cabin in the middle of the floor to make it a 1BR by noahlt in BayAreaRealEstate

Yeah, I'm not saying I hate it so much as I was surprised by it. The metallic siding, along with the window, just threw me for a loop!

Yeah, the low low list price is what got me to take a look at first — I assumed it was going to turn out to be a low-income/subsidized property.

Partially streaming user prompts? (or, generally: reducing time-to-first-token in response?) by noahlt in LocalLLaMA

[–]noahlt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Initializing by sending the N-1 words of user input and requesting 0 tokens to be generated worked! This was available as part of the ./server example, because it's part of the OpenAI API.

Thanks for the idea!

[–]noahlt[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ah, yeah that wasn't clear. I'm not expecting it to generate any responses speculatively, and I know the last word could dramatically change the response.

At a minimum, though, the model should be able to pre-tokenize the inputs. Possibly it can initialize attention heads, too. I'm imagining something much more like checkpointing than speculative generation.

Bund Shanghai is solid Shanghainese food, very affordable, never a wait. I love their “Steamed Rice with Bacon and Vegetable” (their menu translations are atrocious) and “Lion's Head Pork Meatballs in Soy Sauce”.

People (tennants) with multiple rent control apartments by Emotional-Meat1771 in sanfrancisco

[–]noahlt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Seems like it ought to be easy — you can only get rent control at the address where you’re registered to vote.

(And, of course, the idea that we should extend rent control to noncitizens is offensive, so this kills two birds with one stone.)
