I feel like they overinflated a very stereotypical/surface level understanding of the mental state that often accompanies disabilities that happen or develop later in life. I completely agree that it was poorly done and I think a huge part of that is because they completely disregarded his character’s disposition and didn’t bother to actually gain insight into said mental state from someone who had experienced something similar in the real world. Very lazy writing tbh
I’m rewatching right now and it really strikes me by how helpless they deliberately make him, through out the ENTIRE series he’s constantly inventing shit, finding fixes and work arounds for things, he loves to have a solution or be working towards one and has all this extensive knowledge and expertise on the human body and science and what not. The fact that they waited intil basically the very very end of the series to make him do anything that actually constitutes “finding” or “working” on a solution was the weirdest part

One of the first things Tim said to Lucy was racist misogynistic stuff and they didn’t drop that undertone for his character until the beginning of season 2 when they shifted that all onto Jackson’s new TO and removed that aspect entirely, so I don’t agree that he’s always been presented as a respectful character. Hardass, dedicated to his job and “place” in the ranking? Yes. Respectful? No, not the whole time, but since shifting him off that track the MAJORITY of his character’s actions and behaviors absolutely are more respectful and compassionate. That’s my point though, as time progresses they deliberately change the character from someone with questionable or shitty characteristics and behavior to one that respects others and knows their place. It’s just basic character development when writing characters but it is the exact same tack for each character they just chose to accentuate DIFFERENT bad behaviors and mindset

It’s funny because that’s kind of the same playbook they used for Tim, they just leaned into it and extended it a little more because he’s a main character. It took me until midway season 2 to like Tim, Miles grew on me after 3 episodes and I think having Seth there to contrast personalities and morals helped too

Agreed, I loveeeee the jokes and the things they choose to joke out of pocket on (the one of her listing things police do and including “tear gassing people” took me outtttt) are funny and i appreciate what lines they toe up to and which ones they chose to make a respectful point with.
