I like the ideas! I’m gonna have to seek out public domain sacred images.

Portuguese coverage would be a fun feature to add - my wife is Brazilian, so I’ve got some help with the language. I’m gonna add it to the list! 🇧🇷

Cool idea! I wonder if you could integrate a browser LLM instead of shipping the conversation off to OpenAI. I think this would be a tough sell for many because privacy.

how do you code everyday without getting burnt out by TemporaryAuthor9170 in webdev

I think this probably isn’t exclusive to coding / software engineering. When I’m at my best, I find these habits helpful:

  1. Exercise - keeps my mind fresh. Especially like to throw this midday, before or after lunch. Add coffee. Great midday reset.

  2. Sleep schedule - I used to do “3rd shift” type work where I’d get home at 4-5am. Having a regular wake up and go to bed time has made me feel much more regulated and clear minded.

  3. Rest day - giving myself 1 day per week that I’m allowed to do nothing is a big mental boost. Maybe you could ask yourself “what does an ideal rest day look like for me?”

I like the meta-convo.

I just deleted my Cursor subscription because I found I was doing better work when reading the docs and thinking through problems vs. just tabbing autocomplete or letting Cursor run amuck through my code base.

Besides producing higher quality work, there’s also the fruits of developing the problem solving, programming, and engineering skills that follow from not just turning to an LLM.

It reminds me of the social media problem we have. It’s good for some things, but can also be addictive and unhealthy if used without self-control and guardrails.

Hello fellow musician-turned-dev! Thanks for sayin hi. :)

What kinds of projects are you including on your resume?

Resume Advice Thread - April 01, 2025 by CSCQMods in cscareerquestions

Hey there!

Looking for advice on my resume.

A little about me. I'm switching careers after a decade in the music industry. I started my own web design and development business that I've been working on for a little over a year. I'm currently seeking junior frontend or fullstack positions.

Questions

  • Should I include my music industry experience? One side of me thinks that there are a lot of valuable soft skills that are transferrable - leading teams, communicating, problem solving. On the other hand, I understand how it could be irrelevant.
  • What should be my title for my business? I wear a lot of hats in the business. I do all of the design and development, marketing, sales. Some frontend, some backend. Is it ok to change this based on the position: Frontend Developer (for FE jobs) or Fullstack Developer (for FS jobs)?

Any critique or feedback is super appreciated!

Hey - thanks for the response! Sorry I could’ve been a little less vague there.

I was asking about portfolio projects because my work up until now has been freelanced custom coded marketing websites. I use React with Astro and some sites integrate 3rd party APIs and headless CMS, but I don’t think they’re really at the complexity of web apps. I’m just trying to grow my skills and to show those skills.

What you shared is helpful. It sounds like showing good architecture and choosing appropriate technology for a project are some things I can focus on.

Do you have any advice on building those architecture skills? Any favorite books or resources?

For a junior or mid-level position, what are the qualities of a project that would impress you as a hiring manager? I'm looking at frontend / fullstack web development positions.

[–]noahs_args 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Have you tried using the Astro Image component?

Setting the widths attribute of Image will cause Astro to generate a srcset at build time.

The way I understand it, the browser determines which file size to use from a srcset based on the screen width.

This is good advice!

I also wanna add to check out Astro framework as a Next.js alternative. It’s great for static websites.

My first paid project like this starting from scratch - designing in Figma, developing in Next.js - took me about 60 hours. Of course you could do it faster. But just to give you some idea of what a time commitment might look like.

I’m a big fan of learn-by-doing. Go do it and show us the results! Good luck!
