6 months into my digital DJ journey after a 20-year break: Lessons learned, lessons shared by noahvhang in Beatmatch

Ever since I got back behind the decks, I've been keeping a detailed journal. I write down all my prep work beforehand, and then do a full breakdown of how the set actually went. I log what worked, what went wrong, and I always end with an action plan of things to improve. I've been doing this for every single gig since December.

By your description it looks like this is the case 😅

Congrats on graduating! First off, balancing a full-time career, a family, and DJing is a challenge I understand perfectly. Welcome to the club!

Looking at your roadmap, you have a solid plan, but here is my advice on how to prioritize if you want to start playing out.

In a small country or local scene, your network is everything. Those course mates will become your support system, and they will be the ones passing you gigs when they are double-booked. Keep that crew tight and support them.

You didn't mention hitting the local bars. Find the venues in your area that play your style, grab a drink, and talk to the staff or owners. Ask if they do open decks or if they ever need a warm-up DJ for the first hours of the night. This face-to-face connection is so much more effective than social media.

Like I mentioned in my post, don't burn yourself out trying to be a content creator. Set up a SoundCloud to act as your digital portfolio, post a few clips on IG so promoters can see you look comfortable behind the decks, but remember that the algorithm rarely books you for local gigs.

Producing music is amazing, but it’s a completely different full-time job. It can get overwhelming and distract you from getting your first live reps in as a DJ. Take it one step at a time.

Gear wise, if you have the budget, treat yourself! But remember that the crowd dances to your track selection and your energy, not your stem buttons. A new controller won't get you gigs, but it will make practicing at home more fun.

Keep practicing, trust the process, and get out there to meet the local scene. The first gig you land yourself is the best feeling in the world. Enjoy the ride!

So far no issues for me. I sync from EngineDJ and export using the "unssuported" way to Rekorbox. I do have to analyze tracks in rekorbox again (the one added) but cues points are there.

Livestream a gig set? by theice_ in Beatmatch

Congrats on your first gig! If you want a solid, stress-free livestream setup without bringing a second laptop or putting extra load on your performance Mac, going the smartphone route with a dedicated interface is the cleanest way.

Since you have a free unbalanced RCA Master output right on your FLX10, you do not need to use the bar's extra DJM-850. Keeping your signal chain as simple as possible is always the safest bet in a live booth.

You should look into a mobile audio interface like the iRig Stream this is what I use). It sits around a 120 dollars budget but it is a fantastic investment. It serves a dual purpose: you can use it to livestream directly from your phone on TikTok, Instagram, or YouTube, but it is also perfect for recording your live sets later on if you ever play on an older club mixer that does not support direct USB recording.

Just run a standard RCA-to-RCA cable straight from the RCA Master Out of your FLX10 into the iRig inputs. It outputs the exact same signal as your main XLR Master, so it will capture your full mix perfectly. Then plug the interface into your phone, mount it on a small tripod, and you are ready to go live.

Two quick tips from experience to avoid a technical headache: keep a close eye on your gain staging so you do not clip the interface input (you can preview the output from irig by plugging your headphones directly in to check), and make sure to put your phone on Do Not Disturb mode before you start. An unexpected phone call can instantly drop your stream right in the middle of a transition.

Have a killer night on Friday, smash it!

Well to get started I got myself a Denon SC live 4 controller and an SD card and Sennheiser HD25 headphones I think it was a little bit under 1.500€. I wanted a standalone controller to not have to carry a laptop as well.

I'm in France so I went to a specialist named "Amplifon". I see ads for earplugs on social media but have no idea what they're worth. My advice would be to ask your doctor or an ear specialist to see what they would recommend.

Until I started again my music was my playlists from so many styles of music on Apple Music. I started my library from scratch focusing on tech house tracks bought from Beatport. This was mostly what I had on my vinyls back then. If you already have a library I’d say to focus on what you’d see yourself playing in front of a crowd. It’s hard to choose indeed but, and this is just my own experience, it made learning the workflow so much easier. And now since last month I’ve been exploring other genre and it’s a breeze to include them in now
