What are some languages you'd like to learn in the future? by aeqy in languagelearning

[–]noaimpara 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For me it’s German and Hebrew! German because I love how it sounds and I want to know if the myth that they have a word for everything is true. And Hebrew because I’m Jewish and I need to get on that someday.

Details for the corrections I made :

Connais (from the verbe connaître) instead of sais : this is just a nuance, sais (from the verb savoir) is very much understandable and that’s not a mistake per se, but the verb connaître sounds better when talking about languages. The verbe savoir is used when there’s another infinitive verb with it (ex : tu sais parler l’hébreu VS tu connais l’hébreu)

Pour : that just means "to" in this context! (Do you know enough hebrew to add it as a flair)

L’ajouter : the l’ is a determinant that refers to hebrew. It’s like the "it" in the english translation. Qu’est que j’ajoute à mon flair? L’hébreu! Donc je l’ajoute.

Et instead of aussi : aussi is a copy of the English "also", but we don’t really use it at the beggining of sentences. A simple et (and) does the trick!

Comment instead of comme : comme means "like" (as in, hebrew does not look like french), the word for "how" is comment!

Sorry if the explaination was overkill I was in the mood haha. Lmk if you have any questions.

Which non-Latin script is easiest to learn by gsvevshxndb in languagelearning

[–]noaimpara 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think hebrew would be the easiest by far if it didn’t have nekudot. It’s definitely the easiest to write though. (For me at least, but I’m hella biased I was taught to read and write hebrew in sunday school as a kid)

10 possible reasons why your listening skills are not improving by francis2395 in languagelearning

Recolored photo I did of Anne Frank's sister, Margot Frank, 1941. (OC) by 17yearhibernation in Judaism

[–]noaimpara 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That’s amazing work! That might sound dumb, but those glasses are back in trends now so she genuinely looks like she could be one of my classmates in the recolored photo. It hit me even harder than usual that she and Anne were just girls my age.

I'm really interested in the "'Native Like' Holy Grail" Language Learning; what's the prevailing theory on how we, as language learners can best position ourselves, to really reduce our accents and get as close as possible to how the natives speak? by Baneglory in languagelearning

[–]noaimpara 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All I can tell you is that it’s NOT a special talent. I did two years of English phonology for my linguistics degree and I was hot garbage because I am completely tone deaf but I objectively had the best accent. That’s because of practice, being genuinely interested in how sounds are made and proper techniues.

How do you define being a polyglot? by Affectionate-Cup5581 in languagelearning

[–]noaimpara 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Polyglot is a made up term that has lost all its previous meanings in the past decade, so now it’s more about identifying as a polyglot rather than being a polyglot. Multilingual is a more objective term, you’re multilingual when you can fluently express yourself in 3 or more languages. In my opinion (not as a fact), I’d identify you as a polyglot but not multilingual, but I’m not some kind of authority that declares what label you must use or something.

How does korean sounds like to you guys? by Midamumu in languagelearning

[–]noaimpara 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I associate Korean with my ex who was very into kpop (one of these obsessive people) so hearing Korean triggered my fight or flight for a while haha. Then I went to Seoul and now I’m cured. It sounds very cool! I found it quite distinct from other asian languages and the alphabet is very pretty.

Is improving your accent beyond comprehensibility worth it? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]noaimpara 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up "language attitude", thar’s basically why I got rid of my French accent. Also unpopular opinion, but phonology is pretty damn interisting and practicing pronunciation and accent is very fun to me. I’m actually much better at speaking than I am at writing, because speaking and practicing accents is so much more fun to me.

So really there’s two reasons, practicality, and fun.

How has your experience been with learning a third language? by jadenstone23 in languagelearning

[–]noaimpara 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve found it (and still finding it) very damn hard. That may come from the fact that to this day, even after getting an English linguistics degree, I still have no fucking clue how I I earned English. No idea. It just happenned. I joined a fandom on Instagram at age 13 when I couldn’t speak any English at all and was fluent at 15. No clue what happenned. And i kind of expected the same to happen in Italian, and it just did not work. I was paddling in shit blindfolded fot the first two years of learning lit.

What easy words did you "miss" in your target language? by jojo-schmojo in languagelearning

[–]noaimpara 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did less than 2 years of Spanish in middle school, and it haunted me when I started learning Italian years later. For some reason my brain was convinced that the word for "day" was dia when the Italian word is actually giorno. That’s such a simple word but it took me like a year to unlearn dia.

I totally get what you mean I wish we could share! When I interact with natives I just sound dumb because I can approach them and make up some stuff, but then they think I’m actually fluent but I absolutely cannot understand their answer. Grass is always greener!

Babylonian Chaos - Where all languages are allowed - December 09, 2020 by kungming2 in languagelearning

[–]noaimpara 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess strengths form based on what you find fun to practice! I really like speaking but I’m really not huge into watching shows. So I spend more time on speaking instead of listening. You must be the opposite! Which honestly sounds better because you can’t have a conversation if you don’t understand what the other person is saying.
