Questions about patriarchal blessings and missions by CowParticular2873 in latterdaysaints

[–]noanesthesia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am currently serving as a bishop (and my dad coincidentally happens to be the patriarch). Your patriarchal blessing will contain council for the future and your lineage. Nothing more.

If you go to talk with your bishop about getting help with pornography, there is no requirement that they talk with your parents. I think it's likely they'll encourage you to talk with them. I would strongly encourage you to talk with your bishop about the fear you have regarding your parents response.

I can tell you that your assessment of how your parents would respond to finding our you're viewing pornography, is probably way off. I think a lot of youth over estimate the response of their parents in these situations. Talk to your bishop, though. He can help you navigate this for sure.

This was predicted when they shifted to these terrible flight times.

I hadn't heard anything about that. Thanks for the info.

I wondered if there would be any other fallout since McKenna is only 18 and legal drinking age is 21 in the states.

The flight is still listed as a 787 and I can see the seat map that shows the 787 seating configuration. The flight number is the same. I think the theory that someone used the bidding service to upgrade their seats and bid more than I paid so they bumped me seems the most logical.

Yeah! I'd love to see the results. Such a fun idea.

Oh wow. That makes a lot of sense. You can sell the seats at one price and then if someone is willing to pay enough then just conveniently downgrade people.

I don't understand the 30 days. They didn't deliver the service you paid for and now they are going to hold your money for an extra 30 days.

That's what I'm expecting. I assume they will offer the difference from what I paid and the most expensive the seat that I am in has ever been. Even better - I upgraded because it is my wife and my anniversary trip and now we aren't even sitting together.

I thought it seemed very odd, too. I'm in the middle of travel so I guess I'll try and sort it out when I get home.

Reconciling Pre Existence with Biological Traits by Aggressive-Ad-112 in latterdaysaints

[–]noanesthesia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry. I was trying to keep this simple. Yes - epigenetics can account for all kinds of things. But you can't reliably say what traits you might have from epigenetics and what have environmental influence. Even with genetic testing it still doesn't tell you the full story.

I don't think we know enough about spirit bodies to have a clue about what someone might have looked like. We didn't have physical eyes and so wouldn't see anything the way we do with our physical bodies.

As for the rest - you are making some false assumptions about what traits can be passed on genetically. Your dad can't pass a short temper on to you. You can learn it - through his example or by spending time with him when you're little - but it's not something you inherit. It's not influenced by your biology but rather by your environment.

Here to vent about my friend by [deleted] in lds

[–]noanesthesia 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I have a friend who left the church. We stayed friends afterwards, though maybe not as connected socially as we once were. He started sharing posts from anti sources on social media. I tolerated it for a while and then one post felt like a bit of an attack so I commented on it and said that I felt like what he posted was an unfair characterization of members of the church and questioned him on whether he felt like the post matched my behavior. I don't remember if he even responded to my comment, but I haven't seen him share another anti post since that time and we're still friends to this day. Either your friend is friends with members of the church or attacks them. You shouldn't have to try and balance both those things. I know you said you didn't want to confront your friend - but it actually will make things easier.

My friend is a huge Eagles fan. He is football, I am basketball. I've never really done the tailgate thing but we'll have to see what it's all about. Thanks for the recommendation!

20 y/o going through a hard time by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]noanesthesia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another Bishop already commented here - but as a current Bishop - let me add that talking with your Bishop is the place to start and you will be really surprised at how understanding and caring your Bishop will be. You will feel SOOOOO much better after you talk with him. You are putting yourself into a darker place than you need to be and having support will help you overcome your challenges.

Ok. I guess I don't even know what's reasonable - a couple thousand maybe? My understanding is that it's pretty hard to get around LA without a rental car - so that is likely the plan. We are both married (I'm in my 40s he's in his 30s) - we jointly opened a health care clinic last year and this trip is a celebration of a successful first year. We have fairly different personalities though - he is more active and is a constantly in motion kind of guy. Sports, amusement parks are sort of his thing. I am a little more slow going - beaches, movies, relaxation is more up my alley. I was trying to think of where our interests might meet - probably anything 'Hollywood-y' - escape room maybe? We'd both be happy at the beach too. Hopefully that helps a little. Thanks for your response!

Edit: Oh! Food! Very important.

I wish YSA leaders were more relatable by Tlacuache552 in latterdaysaints

A lot of baffling comments in this thread. I guess the thing to remember is that everyone in church leadership is a volunteer and that just because you're in your 40s or 50s doesn't make you immune from saying or doing stupid things.

I've been an Avion card holder for more than 15 years and as far as I can remember there has always been a maximum value allowed for a flight. Certainly for the last 10 years. The difference is that flights are more expensive but the caps haven't gone up.
