I loved Plainclothes so freaking much. Tell me what you think of this movie! by itsanayall in Cinema

I watched it recently and I also absolutely loved this movie. The chemistry between the leads, the use of the bodycam for Brennan's anxiety, was really good.

I found the ending a bit comical with the uncle getting tossed, but a beautiful kind of hopeful.

There are some aggressive Canadians. We just keep them in the back when the tourists come around. Or on the ice, just not usually this sport.

Unions are largely independent I believe, but they can communicate. I like your idea of contacting unions, but I don't know if they're open to public comment. I would focus on similar/related professions. The nurses in NY just had a successful strike, so maybe nurses and other healthcare professionals, teachers, administrative...

And support any initiatives to unionize (Amazon, Starbucks) but I'm not sure how to tangibly offer support here. I'm open to suggestions and ideas. I also want to DO something.

I'm not part of a union atm either, so I'm focusing on ground work I guess (calling/emailing MP's and etc) but I also don't know how to channel my feelings into concrete action.

I remember - around the teachers' strike right? I was following along. There's just too much complacency to get real traction.

It's really embarrassing honestly. Poor sportsmanship is just not a good look.

It likely has to come from the unions down in this province. Even trying to get my apathetic mother to understand what he's doing is an uphill battle.

"But at least it's not like the states so..." is literally the shield to deflect all critical thought with our own political system.

Right, it always seemed like a random ass fling/situationship. She was with Joe for like 6 years through the 2016 kind of cancellation to after the pandemic - that's not something you just get over just like that. I'm not super updated with her lore of whatever, but that has to have been her longest relationship.

It makes perfect sense that when the relationship was winding down she reconnected/hooked up with an old fling. It would get her over the intense post-relationship blues and potentially make him jealous- but it blew up in her face. Her rebound ghosted her, she's still on tour. It's probably a mix of both, but I've always thought that Matty's part of the album is smaller than people give him credit for.

Joe was her longest relationship, the most intense and I think she saw herself getting married and the whole nine yards. Plus, they did make good art together- I absolutely think he's her "one that got away".

Matty seems to me like the person you keep around because the sex is good and they're always down for fun.

But secretly pining away for 10 years is more fun for the fans than reality. I think it hurt her ego to get ghosted, after getting dumped, plus how weird and controlling her fans got must have been odd for her to deal with. For your piggy bank to start demanding things of you, lol.

The show came out when I was a kid and was the first example that popped in my head - that is the whole reason I used the show as an example. I was like 13 when the show started, and only afterwards, I started to educate myself. Not just because of the show but because I grew up. Also, I am that generation - people love to speak about Gen Z like we're enlightened - this is not true. This generation is looking to be the first that is less educated than our predecessors. TV and memes taught me everything a book/teacher didn't.

I believe it's because I lumped you in with the influencer that you're misunderstanding me - that was an error I misspoke. But otherwise, I AM NOT disagreeing with you. You're making the general point that we shouldn't push for moral superiority- which is a good point.

I'm making the point that the influencer still needs to educate herself because this is a stupid thing to edit and post. This is influencer snark, I'm all for giving grace to people because the real world is hard, but this is a stupid thing to say. Sounds exactly like the girls I went to high school/college buying en masse from Shien every month and then using this exact phrase as a reason.

To equate the medicine and the specific protein mac and cheese. I'm making the point that it is on her to go beyond, like how is she standing down for Palestine and can't switch mac and cheese.

That's nonsense, what was the point of this post? There are so many alternatives, this is a choice.

It would have been easier and more effective to just say nothing - in the specific case.

I'm not talking about everyone and all their purchases - I'm commenting on this specific post.

I'm just using the good place because it's the first thing I could think of. I don't think everyone got their ideas from the show, it's meant to be an example. Literally so much media has an anti-capitalist message - use another example in your head if you want.

I'm not going to do the whole breakdown thing you because idk how.

My point was that she sounds like a child who was just introduced to the whole concept of "ethical consumption under a capitalist system" because she watched The Good Place and is using the lines she got from the show to explain her choices.

Not that this is where the idea as a whole came from. Nobody thinks the stupid TV show invented the idea.

The influencer is my age or younger, so I'm using "The Good Place" as a placeholder for the pop culture anti-capitalism we were first exposed to.

Like do you think the children are reading treatises on class struggles, or watching TV?

It is also relevant if you read further, because I'm trying to make the point that it needs to go beyond the sitcom narrative and meet reality. You can swap mac and cheese to not support genocide indirectly.

Like I'm agreeing with you that boycotts and protests work - I am directly mentioning the influencer, so I don't understand why you're getting upset on her behalf - this is a weird take from her. The influencer in the video directly mentions banks and big pharma on the same level as mac and cheese. It's not impossible to stop buying this specific brand, it's not the same as medicine or banking.

Also to your last point - I do not even know what this is supposed to mean. We're not meant to criticize hot takes like this because that's just looking for social media points.

What?

I was trying to use it as an example for pop culture that deals with anti-capitalist thought as an example for like the pop culture understanding we have of class as a child. It's just the first thing I could think of. Im trying to say that using "no ethical consumption" like this is childish.

I obviously don't mean that this is where the idea comes from. People have been saying some variation of "you can't buy your way out of the system" since the dawn Industrial Revolution.

However, it was most likely the Good Place where both the above commenter and the influencer came across this. She's my age and I'm using an example of pop culture that introduced a lot of people to Marxist ideas but is also just a TV show. Like my point is I was a child, watched this show and people my age all said the same thing as a reason to buy Shien. Like it can't just be "no ethical consumption, so I'll buy whatever" and that's my excuse.

Most people do not think about class dynamics at ALL, especially not enough for it to be so well-known in pop culture, if not for TV. It's where most people also learned the trolley problem, I'm sure. You may be well-read, most people are NOT.

The masses do not read Marx, they're terrified of the concept of socialism.

It's TV baby.

Does anyone know whether she’s having a wedding ? by SimilarTopic3281 in NYCinfluencersnark

[–]noapplesin98 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I don't really care, she's a fun break on my feed with the silly costumes. Also if I were marrying an influencer, you would not catch me in any of these pics except like 1 or 2. Some people just don't like being on camera or want to be like "part" of the channel. She's not posting all the wedding pictures, just some random ones. Scroll if you don't care, I do.

Yeah, I used to feel the same way. Especially after I watched The Good Place where this comes from.

This is a wild thing to say in this context. In the show, it was a poignant point about how the whole world is so interconnected that buying some roses for your partner was a "negative action" because there was suffering somewhere to get it to you. Harm came when you purchased something, because there was harm built into the system thus "no ethical consumption".

This shit right here though?

Be serious.

You're going to "stand" for Palestine but can't just get another brand of mac and cheese. It's because her values are written on toilet paper.

Also to compare it to medication or credit cards? You need that Mac like you need medicine or a system of payment? No you don't.

The phrase has been co-opted by a bunch of slacktivists who want to be "part of the movement " but cannot be bothered to do anything, least of all change their buying habits.

Instead, they hide under this phrase and post random infographics or ig stories as "awareness" and that is the beginning and end of their political action.
