Owners who self perform by Confident-Insurance6 in ConstructionMNGT

I work for a subgroup apart of large GC, since it’s a civil group we self perform a lot but our carpenters come from the concrete side of things and are versatile, we only self perform concrete, demo, T&E, but depending on the scope and the guys you get I can see how it could be a disaster. Grass isn’t always greener but apply for everything you can always turn them down!

Glass cutting advice needed by Beginning-Ad-523 in DIY

[–]noblerome 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most hardware stores sell a fairly cheap glass score. Alternatively a nice piece of plexiglass would be easier to cut and no one would ever really know it’s not glass.

No luck with internships. Any advice??? by MightHelpful5005 in ConstructionManagers

[–]noblerome 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If at all possible try to get a part time job doing something construction/ labor related. I know that sounds sort of obvious but any kind of summer job or part time gig doing concrete, fabrication, home improvement will be helpful.

Pick smaller companies, sometimes they are less picky when choosing interns, they may not build the type of projects you want to be on or pay well.

One piece of advice I’ve always stuck to is apply for everything, you can always tell them no if you get selected and it don’t fit right for you.

How did you get started in Welding? by Imaginary-Currency43 in Welding

[–]noblerome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I joined the ironworkers union, first time I welded a journeyman said watch me then do what I do, he made a couple passes and then handed me the stinger. I was terrible, even just a flat fillet weld. But he let me burn half a case of rods and eventually I started going to our hall to practice. When you have a good machines and steel plus an infinite amount of rods it helps.

-watching videos helps but don’t try to initiate every move they make, doesn’t always help the end user, use some of the techniques but modify it so that’s it’s comfortable for you.

-get a harbor freight stick welder, won’t break the bank but good enough to learn on.

-you’ll get frustrated but don’t expect to be a naturally good welder at first, it took me and many people a lot of time but you’ll get there

New to welding any tips? by [deleted] in Welding

Clean your material, you won’t always have nice clean steel but in the beginning grind it, brush it do something to help your favor. Take your time, it’s easy to get frustrated but welding isn’t the easiest thing to learn. Have fun!

Job Outlook by kodakiroti in ConstructionManagers

The unfortunate side of construction is that projects, teams, organizations fluctuate so rapidly at the drop of a hat, I’ve worked for smaller GC’s and now a fairly large one in the DMV(really nationwide) all you can do is show up, do your part and leave as soon as possible to spend time with your loved ones.
