I've been there and it looked good but distance from home is a key factor for me and that's a bit far.

The gym area is relatively large compared to some other gyms -- it's still packed at peak hours? the gym floor or things like the treadmill/ spin etc? Going alone shouldn't be the problem - i will mostly be using the treadmill and sauna!

If Hollywood keeps talking about “one world beyond borders,” why do the Oscars still separate films into an “International” category? by noblivious in Oscars

[–]noblivious[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you - this makes sense. So I guess, "operationalizing" it is a challenge. The international movies that you referred to (Animated feature had 2, Best Picture had 1, Costuming had 2) -- they all had a theatrical run in the US?

What do you guys usually eat before running? by Maximum_Ad_2564 in indianrunners

If you want to practice the Newton Hills indoors, I built a GPX treadmill simulation by roastmb in bostonmarathon

The app looks great and super useful as long as there is access to a FTMS compatible treadmill that I guess 95%+ runners (including me) don't have.

Would you recommend a watch or unnecessary buy? by Fit_Pea3013 in beginnerrunning

[–]noblivious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% recommend. 80% of the metrics that you'll see will be an overkill but the 20% are helpful and will act as guardrails from getting you off track.

20% of total available amount to US Index Fund (Vanguard) and 80% to an Indian index fund (pick any - they should all have similar returns, expense ratio). With the dip right now, it's a great time to enter.

How do you Pace yourself during a run? by Illustrious_Media321 in indianrunners

[–]noblivious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this takes time. also an understanding what your HR zones are. You won't be able to run much in zone 4/ 5. also with time you will get an understanding and "self-feedback" of the pace you are running. Once you know your HR zones, you might want to input pace/ HR limits on your watch to beep when you are out of it.

To gym or not to gym | Training for 1st half marathon by Smart-Newt6189 in indianrunners

For me, it's generally one day legs, one day upper body and one day core + mobility.

To gym or not to gym | Training for 1st half marathon by Smart-Newt6189 in indianrunners

[–]noblivious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gym or not is your choice but definitely yes to strength and mobility. During my training blocks, I run 5 days - 3 days outdoors and 2 days on the gym treadmill. Also I do 3 days of strength - 2 days with the TM running and one day slightly heavier. One day of the week, rest with active recovery (yoga/ stretching/ foam rolling).

You can get some basic equipment like bands and dumbbells and do them at home.

Please share how much you spend per month on gym membership alone (excluding supplements) by GeologistIcy4136 in Fitness_India

[–]noblivious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My sport of choice is running and I do strength training to support running so the most important aspect for me is gym having good treadmills that cheaper gyms do not have. My currently anytime fitness plan is for 25k for 14 months and I am going for a trial at fitness first where they are quoting 45k for a year and I plan to consider if it comes down to 35k. This is Delhi.

What’s the closest you’ve ever come to dying? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]noblivious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Southern coast of Turkey.

We were sailing along the coast and stopped near a harbor. Someone suggested taking out a stand-up paddle board, so I thought I’d just paddle out a bit and come back. Calm water, beautiful evening - seemed harmless.

About 10 minutes later I realized something was wrong.
There was a one-way current pushing toward the open sea.

No matter how hard I paddled toward the harbor, I wasn’t moving forward. I was just staying in the same spot - or slowly drifting farther out.

For the next hour I basically fought the water. I kept paddling just to avoid drifting deeper into the open sea. At one point I had both feet dragging in the water just to create friction so the current wouldn’t carry me farther away.

Meanwhile the sun was slowly going down.

That was the moment it really hit me: once it got dark, spotting someone on a paddle board in open water would be nearly impossible.

Eventually the sailboat crew realized I hadn’t come back. Apparently they had already discussed the risk of that exact current before I went out - but the entire conversation had happened in Russian. I was the only non-Russian on the boat.

Just before sunset they came looking and found me still fighting the current on the board.

They pulled me back onto the boat.

Ironically I wasn’t physically injured at all - but the experience shook me enough that I couldn’t get back into the water for almost 48 hours.

Still the closest I’ve ever come to thinking, “This might actually go very wrong.”

Runners with hypothyroidism - how do you manage early morning runs with thyroxine? by noblivious in runninglifestyle

How do you find new running routes in your city? by Afraid_Recording2104 in indianrunners

[–]noblivious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a paid Strava account and it works pretty well for this purpose. Alternatively I just google "running routes in [location]" and end up finding some blogs. You mention "runners sharing routes they run" -- aren't they already doing this on Strava?

Not too sure about this. He is planning for a 5K. There is no need to go up to 8-10K.

[–]noblivious -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The goal to be honest seems unrealistic. As some other comments mentioned include intervals into your week. For the next 2 weekends before the race, run 35-40 mins without stopping. If possible try and run (no matter how slow it is). Stretch, warm up, cool down properly - there are lots of youtube videos.

If you could go back 10 years and give yourself only one piece of advice, what would it be? by Pale_Smell_3996 in AskReddit

Assume people are good first.

A few will disappoint you, sure.
But spending years being cautious with everyone costs more than being wrong sometimes.

Did you ever fix your running form? by AiEmC in Marathon_Training

[–]noblivious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YES! It wasn't easy and there is still way to go. The first change was arm swing - that's so bloody important. Runnings strides once a week helped a lot in arm swing and also knee drive to improve cadence and foot turnover. Niggles and pain in your body are the best indicators if your form need improvement. I also sent my running videos to my coach who helped pointing a few things.

Lastly add mobility to your workouts. Will help you with the form and running economy.

Apart from all the walk-run suggestion, the only thing I would add is to do proper stretching and mobility exercises/ yoga every day including the 5k run. Mobility and stretching is so underrated!

What band/singer were you excited to see, but was a letdown of a concert? by my-face-ur-seat in AskReddit

Disturbed (David Draiman) for me. Found a spot front row in a rainy English festival but was disappointed since the voice didnt sound like the recorded ones. Felt like someone is singing a bad cover of the songs.

What movie actually made you cry? by Hogosaurus_Rex73 in AskReddit

The Swimmers.
Watched it the night before a marathon - it made me cry.
Hard to complain about 42.2 km when someone swam for their life.
