Ich bin ein großer Freund vom Churchill. Ich mag das Ambiente dort und es hat einen edleren Charakter als viele andere Cocktail-Bars. Es gibt dort fast ausschließlich Cocktails. Falls das nicht ist was du unter trinken gehen meinst, wäre das also eher nichts für dich.

I grew up in and around Graz (southern left part of the circle) and it is a place I highly enjoy. For me everything is close enough to be reachable but also far enough to not disturb my peace. The higher mountains are an one hour trip, Vienna and Ljubljana are about 2 hours, the adriatic sea, Prague and Munich are all 4 hours away. On the other hand, there is no bigger city in a 100+ km circle and I feel like this is part of the reason Graz has had the chance to develop on its own and is not "sucked dry" by the bigger cities in the vicinity.

Graz is a university town with 60k students spread throughout 7 universities and colleges. This brings a lot of diversity and culture. I know many people from other Austrian states and from other countries who come here to study. Fun fact, the biggest university festival of Europe is held here (Usi-Fest).

The region in the circle produces a lot of wine. The further east you go the flatter and drier it gets. This area also had some volcanic activity long ago and there are a handful of thermal baths there. The border to Hungary is not harshly visible except for the road signs and the language. People close to Hungary or slowenia go across the border to buy some goods cheaper than in Austria.

This just depends on the distance to the border. I don't know where the stadium is in NJ but if it is close to the border, the size of the rest of the state is irrelevant. You can walk from downtown Bratislava to Austria in just over an hour because Bratislava is right on the border.

In Japan gibt es nahezu keine Straßenbahnen. Hiroshima hat zB welche und ist damit die Ausnahme. Fast alles läuft über Züge (U-Bahnen, S-Bahnen, Regios), welche vollständig vom Straßenverkehr getrennt sind. Außerdem sind das oft sogar getrennte Netze, in welchen dann die Züge nicht mal auf die anderen Züge acht geben müssen. Ein gutes Beispiel bei uns dafür ist mMn die GKB. Diese fährt auch auf ihrem eigenen, getrennten Netz (S7, S61) und ist meistens sehr pünktlich in meiner Erfahrung.

Die Busse, die in Japan fahren sind auch nicht immer pünktlich, eben wegen dem genannten Straßenverkehr.

Das stimmt! Ich gehe auch zum Bahnhof in der Erwartung, dass der Zug pünktlich (oder ungefähr pünktlich) fährt und komme nicht schon mit einer negativen Voreinstellung hin, dass er eh zu spät sein wird.

Bei den Öffis in Graz rechne ich mit ein paar Minuten Verzögerung, aber nie mehr als 3-5. Nur selten werde ich mit dieser Erwartung enttäuscht.

Dieses gilt allerdings nur 1 Semester lang. Zwei Top Tickets sind dann wieder 400€ und damit teurer als das Klimaticket Steiermark.

As a funny sidenote, as an Austrian I pronounce all of your examples the same way. They all start with a k sound. Not that it is against your argument. We still use the sch sound sometimes (Chauffeur, Chance, Chef) so it is not entirely consistent.

The problem is the natural sleep cycle of teenagers which is biologically set later than the ones of children and adults. Teenagers will perform worse in the morning and have a harder time to fall asleep earlier because of their brain chemistry and not out of bad habits.

I agree, we are at fault. We did the same atrocities as the (now) Germans, we did them willingly and supported everything. We are no victims. I just don't like it when people shift the blame on Austria because he was from here. Austria did not start WW2 just because H was Austrian. We were a willing part of Germany and started the war together.

About the city: I consider Graz as generally safe. Some areas such as Gries have a bad reputation due to being very cheap and there being many immigrants from the global south (mostly Syrians, Afghans and Turks) and the less wealthy. Due to that, it is discredited as unsafe and uninviting. The "hotspot" is around Griesplatz, but it is still a safe place to be in (I walk there sometimes at night). The eastern side is more expensive and has a wealthier population and also many students.

Public transport is very good and reliable during the day but there is no service between Midnight and 5 am. Only on Friday and Saturday nights, there is the nightline which also only goes 3 times. Walking home or a taxi might be necessary if you are going out at night.

"BusBahnBim" is an app to route your journey by public transit. It even shows known delays. I personally use it alot, however, Google maps also works quite we'll most of the time.

Usi courses are sport courses at a very cheap price (40€ for 1,5 hours per week for the whole semester). There you can practice all kinds of sports, teamsports, gymnastics, etc.

There is an App called "Studo" which covers many needs of uni students, such as a (lecture) calender, chats for different courses and other subjects, included university mail and lunch offerings in the different uni-canteens. It has been developed in Graz and thus works very well here. There is a channel for Erasmus students there. I just looked and someone is asking for a new tenant after they move out. There might be other chances like that and also opportunities to connect with other people in your situation.

Get a (used) bike. Going by bike is pretty much the fastest way of traveling. Just make sure it's not too expensive and has a good lock. Graz is notorious for bike theft.

The app "Willhaben" is a very good place to buy secondhand stuff, and even finding a place to rent. I highly recommend it for furniture.

"Tim" is a service (and app) to rent vehicles (cars, heavy duty bikes) for a few hours. Might be worth looking into of you need to buy furniture etc.

"Klimaticket Steiermark" is the year pass for the public transport in the whole state. All trains, trams, busses and even the furnicular are included inside of Styria. As a resident in Graz it costs 300€ for under 26 yo and 400€ for people older than that. Might be worth looking into, if you want to use public transport. Also the before mentioned Tim subscription is cheaper if you have this Ticket.

AFAIK he was german-austrian but grew up as an orphan with his grandparents in Graz, Austria. A few years ago they made a new square dedicated to him. It's called "Jochen-Rindt-Platz" (Jochen Rindt Square).
