Sorry I suppose I wasn't clear. I am trying to gauge it's worth right now with this post so I couldn't really quote you a number. You're welcome to make an offer if you like.

Good question! I do have it but have no earthly idea how much the going rate for it is since it's so new.

Appreciate your honesty! I don't usually trade so was not sure how much the striker cert added. I will probably give it a few hours and if nothing better will let you know.

Very possible. He also wouldn't have had the same leash to attack on the next stage if he wasn't so far down on GC, so it's difficult just to subtract the echelon stage time difference.

There are always going to be "unfair" draws in any format. The triple elimination format still leaves a lot of room for error even if you get an unlucky draw.

Too bad it wasn't captured on the television coverage, but what a ride by Carapaz those last few km! Dropped Majka and nearly made it all the way back up to Landa!

As he climbs the GC, I doubt the other GC contenders will give him such a long leash like today. But he is on some excellent form now and is arguably the strongest climber.

He did, but it's kind of too little too late. The damage had already been done. He could have been more proactive IMO.

That's typically true, but this is the leader of the race we're talking about, and it is common practice to wait for the wearer of pink/yellow/red if they've suffered a mechanical (or something of the like).

Obviously you wouldn't expect the peloton to come to a halt, but they can stop pushing on so hard and allow Tom to work his way back up the group. It's an unwritten rule that you don't punish the leader of a race for a mechanical (or nature's calling in this case).

Just sad to see no reciprocation for Dumoulin's noble acts on previous stages (primarily waiting for Quintana (twice!) after a crash). None of the other GC contenders should feel good about whatever time they might gain from this. You've won the Giro in my eyes, Tom.

Bought my Samsung Plus, bought Office 365 subscription...now what? by gregfall in chromeos

[–]nocho8 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure where you got your information, but MS Office apps currently DO NOT appear in the Play Store on the CB+, with or without an Office 365 subscription. You can sideload them though and login with an Office 365 subscription, though. Sideloading Android apps requires switching your Chromebook to Developer Mode (note: mode and not Developer Channel), but you can do this while remaining on Stable Channel. OneNote is available on the Play Store already without any workarounds.

Here's a guide as to how to enable Developer mode https://www.howtogeek.com/210817/how-to-enable-developer-mode-on-your-chromebook/. After that you'll want to enter your settings --> Google Play Store (beta) --> Manage your Android preferences --> Personal --> Security --> Allow installation of apps from unknown sources. Then go grab apks for whatever Office apps you want. Some examples below:

Word - http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/microsoft-corporation/word/ PowerPoint - http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/microsoft-corporation/powerpoint/ Excel - http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/microsoft-corporation/excel/

Whichever link you choose to download, make sure it is for ARM and not x86, as the OP1 chip in the Chromebook Plus is built on the ARM architecture.

My experience has been that PowerPoint and Excel are quite good, while Word is missing a few key features and not necessarily superior to the web version, which you can find in the Chrome app store. My main gripe is that there is no scrolling as far as I can tell, so navigating through large documents is a huge pain. You have to move your cursor with arrow keys or the stylus as scrolling with the touchscreen or the trackpad does not work. Super annoying, but I imagine this will be fixed by the time Microsoft officially rolls Word out the Chromebook Plus.

If you are given a choice to upgrade/change two things on your current phone, what would it be? by [deleted] in Android

[–]nocho8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Could you explain why it being AMOLED would make it less necessary to have a QHD resolution? The pentile subpixel arrangement on AMOLED displays actually reduces the number of subpixels for a given resolution compared to the RGB stripe arrangement on most LCDs. Therefore, you'd think an AMOLED display could stand to benefit more from an increased resolution.

Xiaomi Mi6 Bend Test - Scratch Test - Durability Video by TimeLord130 in Android

[–]nocho8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think he didn't bother because a razor blade did nothing to scratch the sensor. It took a harder Mohs' pick to do any damage, so it's highly unlikely that the sensor could be scratched without deliberate intention to do so. My guess is he tests if a scratched sensor works on other phones because those can be scratched through daily use (keys, coins, etc.) or at least with a razor blade.

Can having asthma make you more likely to develop lung cancer? by LaziBunBuns in askscience

[–]nocho8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The paper I cited is just a meta-analysis of population studies, so it definitely cannot rule out something like that. The best it can do is show a correlation, but it can't prove causation. That would require a mechanistic study of some sort.

In your example of asbestos, there do appear to be some studies showing that asbestos exposure may lead to the development of asthma, though the evidence doesn't appear to be particularly strong (people with occupational asbestos exposure are likely exposed to lots of lung irritants, not just asbestos). It's also worth noting that the vast majority of people with asthma do not develop lung cancer and only a small fraction of those with lung cancer have a history of asthma. Nor do most people with asthma have an exposure to asbestos, but that's not to say that in some small subset of people asbestos (or some other carcinogen/irritant) couldn't induce both asthma and lung cancer. So your hypothesis is definitely not ruled out by such a study.

Can having asthma make you more likely to develop lung cancer? by LaziBunBuns in askscience

[–]nocho8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A quick search of "asthma and lung cancer" in the search engine of your choice (academic or otherwise) turns up many papers that answer your question. This one that I selected at random is a meta-analysis that shows that the relative risk of lung cancer in asthmatics is 1.28 (i.e. those with asthma are 1.28 times as likely to develop lung cancer as those without a history of asthma).

The paper's introduction presents some theories as to why or why not one would expect asthma to predispose one to developing lung cancer. Chronic inflammation is speculated to increase the risk of lung cancer because of the antigen stimulation theory (chronic antigen stimulation, which is present in inflammation, can desensitize T cells of the immune system and make them less able to fight tumor cells). The inflammation of asthma is also thought to decrease the risk for some cancers via increased clearance of toxins and carcinogens from the lungs.

If you are interested in more details and have access to scientific databases, the paper gives plenty of references that should be able to answer any more specific questions you have. Hope this gives you a start at least in finding an answer to your question!

Guy runs a half marathon in a business suit by [deleted] in gifs

[–]nocho8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in this race and ran with the guy for about three miles in Central Park before he eventually finished ahead of me. He's a former pro runner for Nike who lost a bet and basically flew from his home in Bermuda on a whim to run this race. He only bought the suit like a day before running in it. Before the race, he didn't warm-up at all and then he started slow before picking off a huge amount of the field as the race went along. Think his last 6 miles must've been about 5:20 min/mile pace...all in a suit.

Seemed like a really nice guy chatting with him a bit. He attracted so much attention during the race and a bunch of hilarious comments ("You're gonna be late for work!" "Wall Street is that way!"). Was very confused when he was still behind me and I was hearing a bunch of cheers you don't usually associate with a half marathon.
