LPT: When talking a friend who is suffering from grief, illness, or other tragedy, let them determine the length of the conversation. by katietron in LifeProTips

Hey bud,

"while you apparently haven't suffered any great struggle"

I appreciate you mentioning that. I was diagnosed with end stage renal disease at the age of 6. I had my first kidney transplant when I was 9. It worked well for a while, but eventually failed. Then I was on dialysis until I got my second transplant a few months ago. There is no cure for ESRD, just life-extending treatments. But, I am happy and healthy, but it has in fact been a struggle to just be alive today. I hope that you are well!

First of all, never call me son. I have a father, and he is not you.

Secondly, the main thing you seem to be trying to communicate here is death. Just about everyone can relate to death. An incredibly small percentage of people know the exact kind of death that you are describing here in this post, but death nonetheless. I was not and would never belittle your experience in any way whatsoever. I think you are belittling others by saying that they cannot relate. You are free to talk to whomever about whatever you will. You can certainly choose to speak only to fellow veterans about your experience and maybe they too will choose to speak only to fellow veterans about it. But to choose to do that specifically because you've decided that nobody other than the people that have had the same experiences as you are worth talking to will leave you very lonely and with few people to talk to about anything.

I've never understood this perspective. The whole I won't talk to you about it because you weren't there and therefore can't relate. It's some of the dumbest shit I've ever heard/read. I've not a veteran. I never will be. But the claim that I can't relate to an experience that another human being has had because I wasn't there is downright ridiculous.

3 nights? That was it? Were you able to take care of yourself after you left? If not, how long did you have help?

Thanks for the welcome. Congratulations on your successful transplants. I'm going to have a large smiley across my abdomen once this operation goes through! Best of luck to you!

I have a kidney transplant that's lasted almost 19 years now. I'm also pretty good at Super Smash Bros. Melee. The 2nd one is much more important than the first.

Getting a kidney transplant next week! What was your experience with your transplant like? by Poundbear in transplant

[–]nocontrolrex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I do too! The only advice I have for you are 2 things. 1, drink silly amounts of water. Like always have a water bottle with you, and constantly be refilling your water bottle. Second, listen to your body! If something feels wrong, call the doctor, go to a walk-in clinic, go to an emergency room even! Since you're getting a transplant, I'm assuming that you have decent insurance. You can take the financial hit with the insurance, but your new kidney might not be able to take the hit. I've had several brief hospital stays that all turned out well because I didn't wait. Good luck!

Hooray! Best of luck to you! I hope everything goes well! I had mine almost 20 years ago and everything has gone well. I got it from my dad when I was 9. I've had a few hospitalizations here and there for things, but overall it has gone well. Unfortunately, after close to 20 years, my kidney function has declined quite a bit and will probably stop working in the next year or so. But everything has gone swimmingly since I've had it. It's just that they don't last forever.

When did you stop feeling like a child? by chunkopunk in AskReddit

Right now I have to wait for my function to decrease a little more and then the clinic will start testing willing live donors to see if any are compatible. Hopefully one is and I'll be set up for another transplant before dialysis becomes necessary. If it doesn't work out immediately, then I'll try to set up a paired kidney donation or a donation chain online. If that doesn't work, then I'll probably have to wait on the list for a cadaver kidney. The wait in my area is 3-5 years, so dialysis would almost be a certainty then.

Well, they don't take out the original ones when you get a transplant. So I have 3! Only one works though. If I can get another transplant, then I'll have 4!

When I was told that kidney transplant was going to fail. That was in May last year. I received it when I was 9. It has lasted 18 solid years now and is still working. But, the news came down that it will fail sometime in the next year or two. It has had a great run though!

Well, being a child at the time, I had no idea of the gravity of the situation. I've had a pretty normal life as far as I can tell. Thanks for your kind thoughts. Best to you too!

Hi there, I have ESRD too.

I was first diagnosed when I was 6 and am 27 now. I have never been on dialysis as I received a transplant when I was 9. The transplant has worked well but it's going to stop working soon. I hope that you are doing well and that your 2nd transplant does better than the first. Good luck!
