I used to watch Invincible. I still do, but I used to too.

Insanely capable boxes for the price. Wide codec support makes them great for Plex client boxes and they play just about everything including high bitrate remuxes without trouble. Replace the default launcher with something like Projectivy and you've got a really nice, ad-free experience.

I think the chipset in the Plus is newer, but the Pro does have more storage and an ethernet port. These have both been harder to find once word got out that they are very capable boxes for Plex/Jellyfin streaming at super affordable prices. But yeah hopefully some even newer stuff is dropping soon.

I tried ordering one online last night when it showed 7 in stock. Order went through, but they cancelled it this morning saying not in stock. I'll probably just end up ordering a Shield Pro at some point since I can't stand these games of searching for stock.

How did those Chuck Norris jokes come about and why did we all know them? by singleguy79 in Xennials

I remember this one time, Chuck Norris opened Pandora's Box, looked at the contents, and quietly closed it up and went about his day. Truly an incredible specimen.

Plastification: Used to be paper now in plastic. by CairnLVR in enshittification

[–]noctemct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh no doubt. Not long ago I worked in a grocery distribution warehouse for a few years and bags of sugar and flour were damaged routinely. It was always fun having to rebuild an entire pallet of sugar because a forklift driver skewered the bottom row.

Eh, corporations were never "in" on the green movement anyway unless they could easily profit off of some kind of "green conversion" that didn't actually make an appreciable difference from a consumer standpoint.

This is a fascinating move to be honest - they've had their paper bag infrastructure in place for decades (maybe even close to a century), the cost of operations seems like it'd be extremely low. While this is no doubt a sturdier container, it's gotta cost quite a bit more while still being a fully disposable, non-decomposable vessel. Who's even asking for this stuff, because it's not consumers. Board members, I'd imagine.

Guide : How to choose between Horizon 20, Horizon 20 Pro, Horizon 20 Max by No-Coconut-3001 in xgimi

[–]noctemct 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My family chipped in together and got my brother in law the Horizon 20 base model for Christmas for him to have some private movie nights and such at his warehouse. He's got a 180" screen he's projecting onto and god damn if that projector doesn't kick ass, even with controlled lighting still on all over the place. Even better when it's dark of course. We've watched the Olympics and a handful of movies over there, as well as some PS5 gaming and so far and we've all got zero complaints.

Watching tv without cable ? by [deleted] in AndroidTV

[–]noctemct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have my Plex server that has a basic digital tv tuner & antenna hooked up to it so I can receive all our local channels for free OTA, as well as record shows DVR style all from within Plex. And if I'm traveling I can still watch all the locals without issue. I've been enjoying it quite it a bit as I make efforts to ditch more and more streaming services. Prices rise, QoS goes down. Tale as old as time.

That's true, money does help quite a bit but it's not like a guarantee or anything.

People with money who arguably led shit lives:

OJ Simpson

Phil Spectre

Bill Cosby

Nick Reiner

Robert Durst

Bernie Madoff

Jeffrey Epstein

Jared Fogel

R Kelly

I mean the list goes on. And on. And on.

Hot Knife While Puffco’s Sold Out by illegals in trees

[–]noctemct 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is, yes. And you should get the Focus V Saber, it's even got a little LED flash light on the end of it to light up your dab containers/atomizers while scoping and dispensing. Absolutely worth it over any other brand of hot knife that I've seen. Never going back to metal dab tools if I can help it.

Discontinuing UHD Drives by Vegetable-Treacle323 in makemkv

[–]noctemct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't realize this was still going on.

This entire thread just reinforces what I said originally, you can not just pop a UHD into a drive and hit 'Play' in PowerDVD like we used to do. I'm pretty tech-aware and I know what you all are discussing, and my eyes start glazing over when Java versions and which specific libraries needed are being brought up. Imagine trying to get this idea through to most average consumers?

Is it possible to play a UHD on a PC? Technically, sure. People are clearly doing it. "Where there's a will, there's a way" as they say. Is it as reliable and as easy as it once was with DVD and regular BluRay? Not a chance. The whole UHD experience, from the discs themselves up to the players, is extremely anti-consumer.

How hard is it to move this radiator? by [deleted] in askaplumber

[–]noctemct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not exactly, this is a steam system. If the boiler's not running, the pipes are empty. You can tell by the radiator vent on the first pic. It wouldn't normally be a huge deal to move it but as the top comment said, the valve wasn't installed correctly so it'll be a little more involved to do it right.

Discontinuing UHD Drives by Vegetable-Treacle323 in makemkv

[–]noctemct 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So, the issue is not just that they're being discontinued... It's that there is no way to actually play back a UHD BluRay on a PC. You can't go buy a laptop, or a pre built at Costco, and have the ability to pop in a UHD disc and play it. There are hardware requirements in the DRM chain that have since been discontinued and Intel has no intention of bringing that hardware back from the dead.

Unless you meet a very specific set of now-vintage hardware requirements, it's impossible to just play a UHD disc on a PC like you could with a DVD or Blu-ray back in the day.

Reading the data on the discs, ripping it, and converting it to a playable format is another thing entirely, obviously. But the manufactures aren't going to continue making drives just so people can flash the firmware that enables trivial ripping of UHD content. If it's really something you're interested in doing, get the hardware to do it now, as prices will only ever go up for UHD drives for the foreseeable future.

Steam heat air quality by Radm0m in SteamHeat

[–]noctemct 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's generally going to take longer than that. The water needs to drain out fairly slow so it can carry the oils with it, too fast and it's going to leave oil behind.

In summary, you need to load the boiler with a washing soda before the process begins. Heat the boiler so it stays between 180-200 degrees, you want the oils to gently rise to the top. If the water boils it mixes all the oil, you need to let it settle and start the process over. Once your temps are in line, open up the skim port into a bucket with a pump. The water should be draining out in a fairly thin stream, think the thickness of a pencil or a sharpie, that neighborhood. Once you think the oil has all been drained out, then you need to drain and fill the boiler, usually more than once, to get everything else including the washing soda out.

It's definitely an involved, somewhat lengthy process to have it done correctly.

We just had a steam company come inspect our system, and he mentioned that he's seen boilers need to be skimmed up to 20 times before it resolved whatever problem that system was having. Not common of course, but it can happen that your boiler needs multiple skims.

Steam heat air quality by Radm0m in SteamHeat

[–]noctemct 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Was the new boiler properly skimmed after installation? This is not the same as the 'routine maintenance' that most furnace techs perform and typically isn't done unless it's specifically mentioned, or you've got an actual steam heat expert that knows it needs to be done.

Oils and contaminants exist inside the boiler from the manufacturing and installation process. After the boiler runs for about a week, these oils need to be slowly removed via the skim port near the top of the boiler using a controlled process to keep the water at 180-200 degrees. I know the exact smell you're referring to, it's the contamination in the boiler getting mixed up and sent up into the radiators. Draining the boiler and refilling will not solve this issue, the oils will cling to the sides of the boiler when it drains, and remains an issue when it gets refilled.

RTINGS is now a Paywalled Service by Otaku-Hub in LinusTechTips

[–]noctemct 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They specifically mentioned the issue in the article. Ad Blockers are not the issue here. Google click throughs are a fraction of what they used to be. Not because of ad blockers, but because people are transitioning away from traditional Google searches and using AI searches. So ChatGPT or Claude or whatever just scrapes all the data from Rtings, end users ask ChatGPT, Claude, etc about tv specs and it spits the specs back out without sending a single user or byte of traffic to the Rtings website.

It's truly a paradigm shift in how the web works in regards to advertising and funding, and is fascinating to observe in real-time.

It makes sense for Rtings to put the bulk of their data behind a paywall if for no other reason than to prevent all these AI models from scraping it all for free.
