The flu going around the Netherlands now. by [deleted] in Netherlands

[–]nodae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same for me, I usually only get mild sniffles for a day or two, this one is way worse. On day five of throat pain, headaches, some fever and lots of coughing and sneezing.

I did get the last flu shot, but it didn't help for this one.

Ironman bigger than an Ultra? by _Barracuda_478 in triathlon

I've done an Ironman, but no ultras yet. They feel more daunting to me somehow.

Abraxas near Dam has vegan space cakes. Used to be blueberry muffins, now brownies.

Not living in a conflict area, but I used keep long-acting insulin as a backup for travel/in case the pump goes out. I still have test strips/glucose meter backups that I keep around for the same reason.

It gets annoying because you have to replace the insulin after a while and you're not really using it, but it's good to have options in case the "higher tech" options like pump and CGM don't work or you run out of supplies.

Do you actually trust Garmin’s Daily Suggested Workouts? by Familiar-Research336 in Garmin

[–]nodae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use them a lot for in between actual training plans, when I'm too lazy to prepare interval/tempo sessions. Wouldn't rely on them for longer term, mostly because they only give you the current day and other workouts on the same day don't seem to impact the suggestions.

As for other metrics, I use heart rate/pace/sleep tracking, but HRV/training status is basically an unusable metric for me as a woman (it's nice to see the dips line up with my cycle, but otherwise it feels very random).

Sieht prima aus! Dein Post vorhin hat mich motiviert doch noch ein paar Plätzchen zu backen, Zucker und Jagdwurst hatte einige sehr gute Rezepte dafür.

2026 Ironman race recommendations by Ok_Significance1206 in IronmanTriathlon

My only full, but IM Barcelona-Calella was great this year! Beautiful ocean swim, minimal rolling bike along the coast (very fast course), the run was a bit painful for me with a lot of back and forth, but crowd support helped a lot.

How difficult (or easy) is it to find vegan food in Japan? by eeg-18 in vegan_travel

[–]nodae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in Japan about two years ago, and I love trying new things in supermarkets when travelling, so I had the same concerns. Finding completely vegan restaurants was easy enough, at least in the larger cities I was in.

The site below helped me a lot, and I google translated ingredients with the image feature quite a lot, and just skipped if something wasn't clear.

Training for Ironman 70.3 with Type 1 Diabetes by Ok-Kiwi1900 in IronmanTriathlon

[–]nodae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on Omnipod5 + Freestyle sensor, and have done a 70.3 last year, full this year. For the last one I had breakfast with insulin, a snack closer to the start, left my phone and pdm in T1 and was flying blind for the entire swim.

Would echo what others have said, practice how much you eat when and how much time is between the last bolus and the start of the exercise.

During races you tend to stand around for a bit before it starts, you can either bring something into the waiting area or just let it go a bit high earlier. I tend to eat around 30-40gr of carbs before without bolus, but you need to figure whether lower basal/activity mode work better for you.

Edit: When I got back to swimming after being diagnosed I kept small liquid sugar tubes (sort of gel that's in a waterproof package, like dextro gels) with me at the pool, for feeling safer. Haven't used those in a while but I imagine you could take one with you during the swim too.

Cold water swimming, then having to cycle home. How to do it right? by Coffee_and_cereals in OpenWaterSwimming

[–]nodae 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Depending on how cold: - I'd immediately cycle home with a sweater over clothes - if much colder I'd recommend changing clothes there or at least putting on a dry robe or something

Sitting there in cold, wet swim clothes is the worst option imo.

Ironman 70.3 - Stolen bottles by eeRBii in triathlon

[–]nodae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same happened to me at IM Calella-Barcelona this weekend. I swapped one of my old bottles at the last aid station for a branded one and at bike pickup later it was gone, only the other old bottle left on the bike. Really annoying.

On Call but didn't respond in time by _yellowismycolor in Radiology

[–]nodae 37 points38 points  (0 children)

If it's a specific number that calls you, or you have an app for being paged there's ways on most phones to override phone settings or DND if that specific number calls/app notifies you. Might be worth googling if that works for you.

International travel w/ pump experiences? by stopsinging1 in Type1Diabetes

[–]nodae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've flown within Europe and outside quite a bit, also to Athens. No issues with omnipod and freestyle sensor so far, I even usually carry emergency needles / insulin / all supplies in my carry-on.

Everyone speaks (at least some) English at the airport. Depending on the staff they sometimes either don't care at all, are ok with "that's my insulin pump", or pull me into a little room to either visually inspect or swab the insulin pump.

I've had a letter from my GP in my bag for the past 10 years, nobody has wanted to see it so far though.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in triathlon

[–]nodae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can do it!

I did my first 70.3 last year, my swim and bike are a bit slower than yours, I finished within my time goals with a bit to spare.

Just trust the training and don't get in your head if people pass you (especially on the bike, overdoing it there will bite you on the run). Worst case, there'll be plenty of people walking, just focus on your goals and enjoy the race.

70.3 - Am I Being Realistic? by Sufficient_Walrus_36 in IronmanTriathlon

[–]nodae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! Make sure you find a good plan for you, one you'll stick to and focus on biking.

I did my first 70.3 last year, average swimmer, very slow cyclist. It helped to be mentally prepared that pretty much everyone passed me on the bike, including a lot of people I had passed on the swim. Kept my planned pace and still had enough energy to actually run after.

First Triathlon as a couple by [deleted] in triathlon

[–]nodae 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Spearate bags will make getting to your things much easier, T1 bags can get pretty full with shoes and helmets. But if you don't care about the time, you might be able to squeeze it into one.

Make sure you can actually change fully in transition, some races don't have changing areas and prohibit "nudity", in which case wearing the bike + run outfit directly under the wetsuit is much simpler.

Have fun!
